We returned to this hotel after an 8 year gap and were mightily impressed. The location is, of course, excellent. Right in the centre of this small typical Alentajan town and with on-site parking. However what really impressed us was the glorious public areas, tastefully furnished and marble clad. Simply beautiful. We enjoyed our poolside lunch and the ample breakfast buffet. Service was excellent and very friendly. An excellent base to explore the Alentejo or to break the journey between Lisbon and the Algarve.
This hotel was beautifully converted from a convent and has some breathtaking rooms and religious art... unfortunately the group that own it run a slack ship! You may get the impression that only three people work here... The same person that runs the pool and bar will serve you dinner in the restaurant as well as other tasks and will appear to have no training in hospitality. You will do a lot of waiting at this hotel, waiting to be seated at breakfast! Dinner! Waiting for someone to serve you an outrageously overpriced drink at the pool bar, witch seems to be the only bar! Yes.......if waiting is your thing then this is the place for you. No food is served at the pool after 1500 although the menu states otherwise 🤔I was told they only serve food when people are here...🤥 Wild! The waiter at dinner shook my hand after I was seated at the table... I've never seen anything like it. He then sold me a glass of local wine without telling me I had to buy the bottle... The food was not great, the starter I had was dry and lacked flavour. Cod Fish main was almost inedible, very salty and dry. A disappointing visit to the restaurant, it could be so much better! The local area has some great some historic sites and great local cafes that are great value for money! If you plan on returning to your room after lunch don't count on it been clean and made up...🙄 Overall, a beautiful building but poor service, overpriced food/drinks and lacking good management... It's a hotel surviving on the wow factor of the building! Not recommended at this time! DW
It was a good choice to stay here...it's a BIG place....l believe it was an old monastery....but with all modern cons...nice food in the restaurant.....free parking...a lift for us old UN's.... very interesting building.......a very good Pousada.
A really very nice place to stay in a former cloister. The room was large and well equipped, very nice bathroom too. The cloister by it's own is beautiful and the swimming pool is amazing. Snacks can be served at the pool and the restaurant is also really nice with a good selection of food and excellent quality. Very friendly staff and quiet place
Nothing better for relaxing days by the pool (with bar service) or visiting Beja and surroundings. Make sure the breakfast is included. Good breakfast by the way. Taking it outdoors by the pool was a real pleasure. With the standards of the Pousadas de Portugal. Authentic, well kept historic monument. Much better since the Pestana Group took over.
My wife and I stayed at the pousada for two nights. The pousada itself was beatifully presented. The restoration work was done carefully and both the rooms and the halls were wonderful. Good facilities with a nice breakfast terrace and patio bar looking out to the pool. The pool and recreation grounds were well suited also for families with children. Good breakfast with good service. Did not try the restaurant, nor the spa. Staff were helpful and gave excellent service.
We could only stay one night here during our exploration of portugal however we really enjoyed the old world atmospheric experience. Room was a monestry cell and although space was limited it was fine for our stay. Room had TV, safe, mini bar, Wi Fi comfortable bed and aircon. Aircon was needed and was a bit noisey. Bathroom was well equiped. Although the rooms were a little dated it was in keeping with the property. The pousada itself was a joy to walk around and explore almost a venue in itself with a chaple, bar, games area, reading area to explore. Pool was fairly large and outdoor seating/loungers readily available and grounds were pleasantly kept.. Parking at the back is free. Hotel is well located in beja just a short walk from the historic center. Breakfast was fine with old fashioned service and although it was not fancy again was in keeping with the hotel. Our only issue was that we could not check in until 3:00 which we found to be later than most other hotels and following our drive from Faro it would have been great to check in at 2:00. Front of house staff spoke good english and were helpful in showing us to the lift, to our room and helping us get out of our room in the morning as we (due mabe to our increasing age/ineptitude) locked the bedroom door but were unable to unlock it. Would stay here again without question.
Stayed here one night in an excellent room. Easy check in from a very welcoming reception and excellent facilities and comfort. The pool is excellent and the pool waiter was very helpful and friendly. Excellent breakfast. We would certainly stay here again and would recommend it. What a nice hotel with staff that genuinely delight in helping guests. It has a very nice bar area too.
A really nice hotel, everywhere in the hotel very authentic, spacious and comfortable room. Good location. Minus for us was the service at breakfast. Breakfast buffet is served until 10h30 but when we arrived at 10h there were several plates empty and were not refilled anymore, there were no more glasses for the orange juice, it took 10 minutes before we got a glass. At 10h15 they started cleaning up the buffet.
Hotel clearly has great character and is well located for the centre of Beja. Restaurant and reception service good (though at breakfast the only available waiter did not speak English and was not very interested in our enquiry). Pleasant pool. But the breakfast was rather ordinary and we did not regard the half-board dinner at €33 a head, without drinks, as worth the money. Most importantly, and recognising the constraints of working within an ancient property, maintenance was below par. The a/c in our initially allocated room sounded dire. We were readily taken to a second which was also noisy and unusable at the highest fan speed. We did stay in a bit of a heatwave (40C) but the a/c was simply inadequate. Wifi seemed good on arrival but would not accept my iPad from the second day. Shower attachment fitting loose. Others may think the negatives are outweighed by the positives. We did not.
