Ernest Hemingway once said of Northern Michigan, “It is beautiful country... and nobody knows about it but us.” Discover what this famous writer loved about the Mitten State at “Hemingway's Hideaway” atop a bluff on Bear Lake, just minutes from Lake Michigan and the hottest attractions. Enjoy a cup of coffee or a Hemingway daiquiri from your private deck with the best views of the lake—only a few dozen steps from your private waterfront on this sandy-bottom all-sports 1,800-acre lake. Lake is crystal clear with approximately 60 yards of shallow water... perfect for young kids wanting to swim.
Minutes from Sleeping Bear Dunes, world-class golf at Arcadia Bluffs, and Little River Casino, this 3-bedroom cottage is perfect for both fun and relaxation. Easily explore the breweries, wineries, restaurants and shops of Northern Michigan during your stay, with an easy drive to Traverse City, Frankfurt, Crystal Lake, and Manistee.
Paying homage to Hemingway's homes throughout the world, three bedrooms await your stay, and can sleep up to eight guests. The Spanish-inspired “Madrid Master” bedroom has a king bed, en suite half bathroom, a writing desk overlooking the lake, and even a small balcony. The “Key West Wing” bedroom also holds a queen bed and channels the tropical vibes of the Florida Keys. And finally, the “Chicago Loft” bedroom holds two sets of bunk beds: twin over twin + a twin over full . If needed, the main living room has a twin daybed that could be used for a guest or someone who may have trouble navigating the circular staircase. The fully equipped kitchen will suit your needs and the four-season porch overlooking Bear Lake is an idyllic setting for a morning cup of coffee (or an evening cocktail!) and your family's meals.
***Winter Time- 4 season porch turns into a 3-season porch with no heating unit in that room. However you are welcome to leave slider open for heat***

The house we had was very comfortable and well-stocked. The Freshwater Vacation team was always available and answered our questions promptly. And most importantly, they were very understanding and accommodating when we told them our car had broken down and we had to change our plans at the last minute. We are looking forward to returning to Michigan and renting with them again!

Unforgettable Stay at Hemingway’s Hideaway!
Where do I even begin? From the stunning lake views to the heavenly coconut citrus soap in the bathroom (seriously, it smelled amazing), to the cabinet full of puzzles- every detail of our stay at Hemingway Hideaway was thoughtful and memorable. Bear Lake will have my heart forever. The house is full of charm and comfort. The beds, pillows, and blankets were incredibly soft. We loved the porch and outdoor seating. The swimming area at the bottom of the steps was shallow and perfect for kids. The neighbors next door were so sweet and surprised us by bringing out their Lily Pad float for our children to play on! The kitchen was stocked, even included a drawer with aluminum foil, parchment paper, and Ziploc bags. Parking is limited but our Tahoe fit comfortably in the driveway. My kids loved climbing the tree out front and swinging on the little swing.Location-wise, it was perfect. Sleeping Bear Dunes and the charming towns of Glen Arbor Leland were only about an hour away, making for perfect day trips. If I had to mention one downside, it would be the living room setup. The couch was a bit small and not the most comfortable. I personally would have preferred a second sofa instead of the bed in that space. Also, there's only one TV in the house. While we’re used to having TVs in the bedrooms, having just one actually encouraged more family time—so it turned out to be a positive in disguise.Highly recommend staying here! You won’t be disappointed.

Great location and views in a cute town!
Location is great and beautiful view of the lake and the sunsets. The blackstone grill was great to have. The house is older and it shows in some places, like the bathrooms. The staircase is definitely rough to get things up or down. The only real problem for me was the lack of a good deep cleaning. Surface level it’s clean enough but it needs a good scrub down. The porch was lovely for sitting and watching the sunsets. We didn’t get much time to get in the water but it being very shallow right off the dock would make for a great play area.

Awesome Family Vacation
Hemingways Hideaway was a perfect fit for our family vacation! Close to so many activities - golf, boating, charming towns, Sleeping Bear Dunes.and Interlochen to see our grand-daughter perform! But most of all the cabin itself was perfect - just as advertised and with so many amenities!! The kitchen had everything we needed to make most of our meals, a huge refrigerator, and all of the paper products we needed, from TP to coffee filters (even coffee), dish and laundry soap. The provided shower wash, hand soap and shampoo was great to have and the hot water never ran out! Our 6 yr old grandson spent lots of time in the lake, the dock was super nice and the beach towels were much appreciated along with the drying rack which was never empty!
The coffee maker wasn't working properly and the management staff got a new one to us
We absolutely loved our stay and didn't want to leave!!

Comfy beds-gorgeous sunsets-friendly neighbors
This property is very cute! The beds and pillows were so comfortable. The master suite is spacious with room for an air mattress on the floor if needed. The stairs made it tricky for those not sleeping in the master to go to the bathroom at night but not a huge issue. The water was clear and clean and great for swimming and boating. The sunsets were incredible! Stores and restaurants are close by. The property description does not sugar coat anything. The way it is described is exactly what you will experience. The neighbors next door were nice! They are literally a step a way. We would definitely stay again!

Great visit!
We are a group of 5 neuroscientists who get together annually to catch up and soak up some Michigan sun. This place looks over the water at bear lake- beautiful sunsets every night. Beds were comfy and kitchen well stocked. Only issue was how close the house is to the busy road- when trucks drive by so fast the house shook. It was too loud for one of my friends to sleep. But if you stock up on some ear plugs- it won’t bother you a bit! Place was clean and we enjoyed our visit.
