First of all the hotel is fantastic. It is perfectly placed near Biarritz to make day tours in Spanish and French Basque country. The hotel is located near the lake with fish and turtles and otters and birds - the feeling of nature and freshness is following you all time you are there. The restaurant has magnificent lake view and general impression of the location is superior. But unfortunately the service is below expectations. I will mention just 2 upsetting episodes where the staff was neither helpful nor appropriate to Relais&Chateax experience. 1. When I asked the receptionist for an advice where to dine outside of hotel he kindly responded he couldn't help because he was not local. Come on guys, seriously? Though he smiled and behave very politely. 2. On check out we had to pay early check-in fee. Indeed we had an early check in which pleasantly surprised us, but none mentioned that it's an extra service. I said to the manager that we were not informed that it was not gratuity of the hotel. I do not mind to pay early check in but prefer to know beforehand. Response did not folow. "Yes sir, I was not there, we had to let you know. I will talk to manager who was there later... 50 euros please" So, I would say, the hotel has all amenities but needs to be more attentive to clients, which is normal for hotel of this level.
I do not like writing negative reviews, however cannot help but state my findings. Whilst on paper and on the website, the Chateau de Brindos ticks all the boxes and hence one of the reasons I booked. Alas whilst the building itself looks grand standing next to one of the largest privately owned lakes in France the rest I am afraid to say does not achieve what tries to set itself as a 5 star hotel.. On arrival one of the receptionists was sitting on the back table, whilst this could be seen as no big deal , in 5 star standard terms it certainly is not acceptable. My room in the annex building was sadly very tired, well worn, scuff marks on all the woodwork , and walls, with tired decorations. This is certainly no better than an airport Hilton hotel room in fact I have stayed in better furbished travelodges!. The lawns were not kept and looked equally sad and unloved . The dinner in the restaurant was equally disappointing, dull flavours and presentation that lacked imagination. The mango served with the foi gras lacked freshness, acidity and flavour, the chocolate souffle was uncooked and had to be returned. The prices were as expected for a 5 star, however it is also sad to say in this case over priced for the standard and quality received. It has also disappointingly gone down as the poorest hotels and restaurants I have stayed at for a long time and certainly the low of the journey and break. Once again sorry for the negative feedback (that was also mentioned at the time) and hope that this helps the team at the hotel to potentially consider the necessary to help raise and improve standards that are expected at this price point and level.
We spent a delightful evening and excellent dinner at Chateau de Brindos. Our suite in the main house was charming. The property has many lovely and tranquille spots to enjoy nature. Don’t miss time in the bar.
We spent 5 nights at this hotel. The rooms are old, the service is very poor, there were no laundry service as it was around New Year. Do not get sick in that place as you have to take a taxi for 30 minutes ride to find a doctor. My impression the hotel relies totally on the ride of the 2 stars rated restaurant. The bar did not even have a television and the room tv channels are very poor. The stars rating of this hotel in my opinion is totally overboard.. I surely will never ever go back. We travel enormously and this is no go. I do not recommend the hotel at all in any way.
We were lucky enough to arrive on a late winter sunny afternoon and the chateau and lake looked stunning in the evening sunshine. We received a warm welcome from reception and were shown across to our room in the annexe building. A large airy lovely room with french doors and a balcony with a magnificent view of the lake. I think to be honest the rooms are a little dated and could easily be bought back to life the wallpaper looks tired. There was so much space with a wonderful marble bathroom and dressing area. The wood floor looked beautiful albeit a little slippy so elderly people would need to be aware. It could do with more soft furnishings to make the large space feel a little cosier and although a lovely dining table a small 2 seater sofa would have finished the room as plenty of space! Room service was excellent and the lovely lady delivered our breakfast every morning with a smile! We also tried room service for our evening meal and although a little on the pricey side for a sandwich and side order of chips it was delicious!! The grounds are beautiful and the old part of the chateau is stunning. We came away to relax for a week and we certainly achieved that! Would highly recommend a stay here!
First the poor/bad things. Room 25, the one we stayed in had no AC. We complained over the two days we were there and nothing was done about it and believe us it was hot when we stayed. Room 25, the curtains were badly maintained. Could not close them properly. Room 25 (and all rooms?) the supplied dressing gowns would not fit anybody over a 36" chest. Parking was at a premium as a BMW dealer claimed all the main parking spots ( we ignored them, had a few words with the dealer and left them to complain). So having said all, that why 5*. The ambiance was fantastic, the chateau sat in its own lake, the staff were very attentive, the bar and general areas were superb, the wines fantastic ( but expensive) and the food at the Michelin star restaurant gave us the best meal we have ever had. The meal we had was a tasting menu from the a la carte. 4 courses, starter, fish, meat and sweet with four different wines with each course. Everything about it was top top notch. The service, the tableware, the plates, the glasses, the food, the presentation, the food itself and the wines. The cost was 100 euros each. If you are in the area go. For the chateau or the food or both.
Loved this property. It is absolutely perfect. The food and service were outstanding. The views of the lake and the attention to detail in the rooms was impressive. Loved the pool and spacious rooms. You are close to Biarritz and beaches for entertainment and shopping yet are able to come back to this calming, lovely hideaway. I highly Recommend this property. We will be back.
Food & gastronomy were excellent/devine but the accommodation & spa facilities were less than expected . The towels for the pool were worn & overused , the pool area needed tidying & the gardens needed more attention . The walk around the lake was obscured by a fallen tree . For the price this facility could be improved
We are currently staying at this lovely hotel for four nights. It has a fabulous setting, we have a lovely large room with veranda overlooking the lake, we've had a swim in the beautifully clean swimming pool and we have just eaten a lovely breakfast served by lovely staff. There is one major problem though. It is June and perhaps unseasonally hot. The staff are hot and so are their guests. I request that the management team do not indicate air conditioning when there is none or as we have been advised, is controlled centrally...what does that even mean!! Regardless of this, we will still enjoy our stay here but would check the weather forecast before we ever rebooked.
Strange location you really need your own transport its obvious the Chateau and lake has been there before anything else ...Reception and lounge very impressive , restaurant lovely with views of the lake and lovely mature gardens ....Mathew head barman was excellent and very good,,, chatty and made great cocktails ... Reception staff very helpful and they do know the district .... food beautiful but could be more simple ....less gastro but beautifully presented and was treated very well as it was a special occasion ..Rooms big and very comfortable bathrooms fabulous with lots of room ... get a lake view ...great hub for travelling to Biarritz St Jean le Luz and San Sebastian Spain Lovely to sit outside but of course the smokers spoil it ... Downside ... It would be great if they had a no smoking area outside for eating as the smokers will spoil your meal ... no air-conditioning... not enough power points ..but no real complaints ...
