Will never go wrong with Shangri-La chain of hotels. The room is clean and comfortable. The hotel offers very good dinner buffet selection, choice of western, Chinese and Japanese with a good variety of seafood. It is also located next to a mall and a shopping street.
We still have one more night before heading to Harbin. We were picked up at the airport by the pre-arranged ride from the hotel and the check in at the hotel was expeditious. Our business executive suite is spacious with a separate bedroom and a living room; the king size bed is very comfortable. The staff are courteous and professional; the young concierge always acknowledging us upon our return. We arranged a City of Ordos/Genghis Khan Mausoleum, which the driver/guide Mr. Yu really made our trip enjoyable. Our room is always spotless upon our return and my compliment to the maid for such great job and non intrusive service. A great contrast to other major city in modern China, Baotou is a beautiful city situated on the Mongolian plateau and it was unusually warm for the past four days and the air quality is great; no smog or gray sky. The roads are wide and beautifully maintained; plenty of parks and modern malls in the proximity of the hotel. The Horizon Club offers decent breakfast and the staff is very professional; gym is little lacking, but not too bad. April is consider a slow month for the traveling in Baotou; the grassland usually comes alive in June. Overall, we really enjoy our stay and really appreciate the attentive service of this wonderful hotel in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
As you would expect from Shangri-La, this is an excellent hotel, providing a really high standard of service. The range of food (Chinese and Western) was excellent, and service consistently attentive and helpful. I stayed on the executive level, and would again. The range of food and drink provided in Happy Hour was very good, and having some space to work and talk was really an asset, especially as it was snowing heavily outside. My only issue of concern was the old one found in China, of other guests smoking in the hotel - which was a surprise to find near my room, given we were staying on a non-smoking floor. Smoke gets into the aircon and tends to circulate to other rooms - which is not so good. Apart from this the experience was excellent.
There is an island in almost every Chinese city with Western oriented service, English speaking staff including cooks, various cuisine and gym. Shangri-La Hotel in Baotou is a perfect example of this combination. It is a typical to receive welcome smiles with "Hello" from every employee there. In the restaurants both Chinese and European cuisine create comfortable environment: you can try something new or go the familiar way. Rooms amenities are very comfortable for relax and good mood. Cafe on executive floor offers quite tasteful menu in the evenings. Special attention to gym/spa area. I have never seen so modern equipment for qualified workout. Shangri-La is a top level in Baotou.
I went to Bautou to attend Rare Earth conference at Hotel Shangri La . Hotel' s location is quite good as it is near Van da Plaza and food street also there is nice park just out side the hotel with lot of activities in the evening. People sing and dance and kids play till late evening . Although staff is not good in English speaking but their willingness to find the solution and to help is amazing. Food quality is really fantastic and cleanliness is par excellence.

I stayed here for 1 night on business at while in Baotou this week. Check in was easy and efficient, and I stayed in a Horizon Club room on level 19. The hotel is well presented and clean, and everything works well. I asked for a Non-Smoking room and was able to get one, which is very welcome as a non-smoker in China. The room included the following features - Iron and ironing board (quite unusual for many Chinese hotels), a well stocked mini bar including spirits, wine, beer, soft drinks and snacks, free high speed WiFi (throughout the hotel), and a good selection of toiletries. Unlike many Chinese hotels, the razor and shaving cream provided was of reasonable quality and could be used without hurting yourself. Likewise the toothbrush and toothpaste were a good quality. The TV included some English language channels. A breakfast buffet was included in my rate, and was on the 20th floor in the Horizon Club lounge. It featured a limited variety of Western and Chinese dishes (all of which were of a high standard). All staff who I interacted with spoke reasonable English (which is very helpful when travelling as a foreignor in country China). Check out was the only reason this hotel rates 4 stars rather than 5. At check-in I instructed the staff that I wanted my MasterCard to be charged in RMB (and not converted with Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) to Australian dollars). They understood this. At check out (which I did on the 20th floor in the club lounge) I again reaffirmed my desire to be charged in RMB, only to be presented with a charge slip by the staff member where DCC had been used and the transaction currency was Australian Dollars (AUD). I refused to sign it and repeated my desire to be charged in RMB, and the transaction was reversed. The staff member then processed the charge in AUD a second time, which I also refused to sign and it was reversed. The third time, the charge was processed correctly in RMB. I believe this hotel needs to conduct further training of its check in/ check out staff to correctly process customer POS transations in the customers requested currency rather than allowing their machines to default to charging in the customer home currency without offering a choice to the customer. As a frequent traveller I will always avoid allowing merchants POS machines to convert currency automatically to my home currency as this always works out to a much poorer exchange rate than the current interbank rate. By way of example, the DCC AUD amount that they presented to me on the charge slip at this hotel was AUD $170.15, whereas once processed correctly in RMB, the amount when converted by my bank in Australia and processed to my card equaled AUD $162.32. This is a significant difference and reflects NO upside or benefit to the customer. This also reflects why I will ALWAYS decline DCC and insist that transactions be processed in local currency. My colleagues checking out with USD denominated cards did not notice that their transactions had been processed in USD by default at this hotel until after they arrived at the airport. A reputable business such as Shangri-La should not apply DCC by default- It diminishes the trusted brand value of Shangri-La that this occurs at this property. It is a lovely hotel but watch out for this issue if paying by foreign issued MasterCard or Visa Card.
While on business and to visit some friends, I stayed in this hotel for a week. The facilities were clean and beautiful; staff was helpful and friendly; service was top notch. Breakfast and lunch buffets provide western and asian choices, and the restaurants offer delicious meals served in high style. It was a busy place with wedding parties, business groups, and birthday parties, but it also had quiet areas for relaxation. Parking areas are entered through a security check on Minzu E Rd, but one can easily walk to enjoy parks, malls, movies, local stores, and restaurants from fast food to specialties from other countries. After weeks of business travel, it was a treat to stay in this excellent hotel.
Location is premier. Staff is friendly and the lobby ambassador, a trainee, is helpful and nice. Lots of choice for buffet breakfast in the morning. However, the pipeline of bathtub was broken and the setting of bathroom was strange which you won't expect it would appear in a 5-star hotel. Room amenities were inadequate where there was no mirror for makeup.
