My wife and I this year decided to take our car across to Bilbao on the Cap Finistere and do a tour of northern Spain and Portugal. After visiting Salamanca, we drove almost due west to stay in the Pousada da Ria. A 17 bedroomed hotel built right on the edge of the Ria, our bedroom overlooking the Ria with the fishing boats going to and fro, and the balcony over the water, very idyllic. We dined in the hotel's restaurant and were treated very well, the waiting staff speaking good english, and we chose the local fish that evening which was excellent.
This is a relatively new pousada, and is located on the bank of a lagoon across the water from the city of Aveiro. The hotel is peaceful with great views across the water. Rooms are very comfortable and you may be lucky enough to get a room with a view across the lagoon. As with all Pestana hotels in our experience, staff are friendly and helpful and not over-formal. There is not much choice locally for eating out, but we had a late lunch in Aveiro one day. There is a car ferry about 10 minutes away across to Aveiro that takes about 20 minutes. Cost is €8 plus €1 per person each way. Return tickets are available saving a few euros, but the trip saves a long drive right the way round the lagoon.
Lovely little rooms in a seaside theme with balconies over the water offering great views of flamingoes and diving birds. Cosy blankets on the bed great for sitting out on cooler evenings. The building has some fab 60's furniture and a brilliant open staircase, also a lovely outdoor pool, think Twiggy sipping a shampers at sunset. I loved this hotel but due to the age, style and location, its dealing with a few minor issues that make it look a bit grubby in the bathroom and balcony, get over it, its absolutely fabulous darling! If you are super freaky hygiene guy, you may be weirded out. The grounds were receiving attention during our visit-early season, i imagine the tennis court will be too by now but check if its important to your stay because it wasn't fit. Staff were all very helpful with maps and info, their English is much better than my Portugese.
This is a great place to stay when you want to get away from everything but you do need a car as it is quite a way to nearest village. We had a lovely room with a view over the lagoon. Recommend taking a pair of binoculars to watch the birds from the balcony - we didn't have any but will make sure we take a pair when we return. The beds are extremely comfortable and it was lovely to have the door to the balcony open at night and hear the water gently lapping. The only negative with the room is that the bathroom is a little dated and in need of updating. All of the staff were exceptionally helpful and were keen to make sure our stay was enjoyable. Breakfast was consistently good with a very tempting selection of pastries. The bar had views over the lagoon and a pleasant place to have a drink. Recommend the set dinner for two. Good quality and value.
Aveiro is a beautiful, small city in the centre of Portugal. People usually only visit Coimbra and Fátima but there are other places worth visiting. Aveiro has lots of beaches very near if that's your cup of tea. The restaurants that surround it are famous for their fresh fish or seafood. Aveiro has a river that flows along the city. It's amazing to walk along it or you may enjoy a ride in a traditional boat (like in Venice). Don't miss the "tripas de Aveiro"- they're so yummy (it's a sweet) or the famous "doces the Aveiro" that are sold in a special wooden container. Enjoy a day in an amazing place.
This is a small hotel built directly on the water of the Ria, a bit like e.g. the Inn Above Tide in Sausalito, CA. The late 50's - 60's style of the hotel is being kept intact with lots of attention to detail: if you are prepared to make the odd concession in this respect the reward is very real. If you are looking for a peaceful, romantic place that has kept its original cachet this is the perfect place. If you do not care for period architecture and are looking for the latest 21st century gizmos, etc. this place may not be first choice for you. The staff are extremely helpful and kind. The place is a bit out of the way (I rate this as a positive). Too bad we were able to stay here for only one night... Very definitely worth the trip!
40 years ago, I went here by car and DID NOT notice how far way from both Porto and Aveiro this hotel actually is. This time my husband and I took a taxi from Aveiro Station and certainly noticed the distance how far it is from civilisation, by the amount on the taxi-meter. In fact, you had the impression this Pousada was surrounded by water. Nevertheless it has a nice outdoor swimming pool, a nice bar and a pleasant restaurant. However for us, this time without transport we did feel 'marooned' in the evening. The TV did not have a clear picture, the internet was slow and there was no proper hairdryer in the antequated bathroom. Despite all these draw-backs, the food offered in the restaurant was delicious. Also the staff were very kind, (they understood our problem) and one of the employees even lent me her own hairdryer, so that I could dry and style my hair. In fact think this hotel would be ideal for a family holiday for families with young ju
What a tranquil setting for a hotel. A friend of mine booked this hotel for me whist I was there on business as his parents live just down the road. And what can I say, my room was very well decorated and furnished and I understand each room is done individually. The staff are very friendly, although I only met the night porter (arrived at 01:30) and the breakfast staff. Breakfast it self was wonderful and being able to sit and watch the water with the sun beaming down in was majestic. I did not have the opportunity to have dinner or use the well stocked large bar but from what I could see it looks superb. I certainly look forward to going back here and bringing the wife.
I came to this Pousada from the Pousada de Viseu which is absolutely great, so i was a bit disappointed with this one. The bathroom was really poor with a faint light, the toilet seat was of cheap plastic, it as no lift so you have to carry the luggage 2 flights of stairs. The staff needs more training. And is some 40 kms away form Viseu on the other side of the Ria. BUT, The bed was good, the balcony of the room facing the Ria was fantastic.
We have stayed in many pousadas in Portugal and normally love them! The standard has always been high. We booked this pousada on the internet and were very surprised when we arrived. The hotel was freezing cold. The staff was extremely helpful and kind and welcoming, but the rooms are extremely run down and worn down and old-fashioned. The beds are small and the bathrooms are not nice. The standard of the hotel is more of a bath hotel from the sixties than a pousada. The food was very good and the restaurant personnel, as well as the whole staff, was extremely good! The location of the hotel is nice and beautiful.
