The staff was great, the breakfast great, the location is absolutely stunning, and our rooms were in a 17th Century outbuilding. And it felt that cold inside! We traveled in February; perhaps when it's warmer the lack of decent heat won't be an issue. We survived, it was lovely.
The Woodhill is a delightful old-style country house that feels like a home and the brilliant hosts John and James do their utmost to keep it that way. Tucked away in a beautiful valley outside Ardara it is the perfect getaway location. Candlelit dining rooms, a roaring fire in the cosy bar, and excellent food. We stayed in one of the bedrooms in the house itself (there are more modern rooms in the renovated outhouses) which had great views over the garden and countryside beyond. It was spacious, warm and quiet, with a seriously comfortable bed... Full fry the next morning for a late and lazy breakfast and then on to Portnoo to walk the strand. Heaven..
I visited the restaurant at Woodhill last weekend with some friends for a meal and we could not find a single fault. There was something on the menu to suit everyone's taste. The food was cooked to perfection and the service was excellent. Certainly worth a visit while in Donegal,
What a surprise to find this house off the beaten track in a lovely setting overlooking green hills and sheep grazing. The food was superb, a lovely relaxed little bar, an interesting village nearby with wool and tweed factory outlets and superb drives with spectacular scenery nearby.
Got married here in July. John and his son James and the satff couldn't have been more helpful. The food was top notch, the warm cosy atmosphere and stunning grounds really added to our unforgettable day. I'd highly recommended a stay here.
My wife and I spent a few days of our five weeks touring Ireland at Woodhill House. We found the host family to be charming and especially the the staff that met us when we arrived and served our breakfasts. We stayed in both the main house and in the carriage house. The main house room was charming, and the carriage house room was roomy and very comfortable, with a small balcony over a pretty garden. We stayed during the shoulder season and the chef was not doing dinners, which was a little disappointing. It is a nice walk into town where there are a few pubs and restaurants. We didn't think the dinning in town was very notable and drove the twenty minutes or so to Killybegs for more options after the first night. The Woodhill House has cozy little pub in the main house that we enjoyed after returning from dinner. We loved the breakfasts, especially the porridge with fruit, and the eggs and bacon. The hosts were also very helpful with planning and suggestions for our touring. Overall this was one of our top favorite lodging experiences during out time in Ireland, for its hosts, staff, setting, and comfort.
Family of 3 shared a family room on a busy weekend in October. We were lucky to get the last available room as there was a festival in nearby Ardara. Taxi from Woodhill to Ardara was €5 each way and the town has lots to offer tourists including cafes, restaurants, pubs, live music at weekends etc etc. Donegal is famous for its scenery. Some people complain about the rain but we prefer to see the rainbows - we counted 14 different Rainbows in a single day - and already many of the wishes we made on seeing each have come true. Woodhill house itself has superior decoration and the owners and staff are professional and friendly. The rooms are warm and have all necessary facilities and I have no hesitation is recommending it fir a relaxing visit.
We found it to be a little expensive for what we got. The room was poorly maintained as far as peeling wallpaper, painted furniture in dire need of another coat of paint and a window that couldnt be opened as it was hanging on one hinge. The bed was rock hard, which made it a very uncomfortable nights sleep. There is however, a lot of charm to the place, and the revamped building we were in was built in the 1700's. Very peaceful area, which we loved. They do need to focus on cleaning the yard up a bit. They have an amazing garden area for guests to walk around, but very poorly maintained as well. Breakfast was great!! Just a pity they charge as much as they do for what you're getting.
I stayed and dined in Woodhill many times as a child with my parents and hadn't visited in many years. I was delighted to find the food and setting was still as fabulous as I remember it but sad to see its not the busy spot it used to be when it deserves to be busy. I spoke with James the owner about how he could promote the bar and food more and I hope he does, it is such a pity to see it so quiet and it would be lovely to see more locals & tourists taking the 5 minute walk out side Ardara town to eat at Woodhill- it is an incredible old Manor House with lovely setting and friendly staff, it has so many reasons to be as busy as all the other restaurants and bars in Ardara,it needs promoted a bit more is all. i will definitely be back
We loved staying at Woodhill House! We stayed in The Coach house which was spacious, comfortable beds, and beautiful view overlooking the walled garden. The main house had a cosy pub which offered a menu for light fare. The highlight for us was the charming village of Ardara and proximity to numerous attractions to see( Slieve League, Glenveagh National Park, Maghera Strand) . We loved the trail from Woodhill and view , hiking into the village from a back lane in a farmer's field. Woodhill also has lovely views of the Donegal hills out the front of the house. We stayed 4 nights and really enjoyed the Inn experience.
