I dont know if it was intentional or not but the place has a creepy vibe throughout. From the creaky floors to the staff. We loved it. Most of the out buildings were in disrepair and we couldnt go in but we were told they are in the process of repairing them. The grounds were great to walk around and just take in nature. If we make it back to the UK we will definitely stay again
we stayed one night in the castle a lovely room in the hofhfield room the grounds are very well kept and your free to wander round on your own we was met by peter a very nice chap who showed us round and took us to our room when we came down the owner was there sally what a plesant lady she was telling us about her dogs and asked did we want to meet them later we said yes. we spent our night in the town of appleby what a lovely place just a short walk away when we came back sally was out with the dogs two big wolfhounds and we met them what lovely animals they are we will be going back again for sure
Beautiful building and grounds to walk around but you certainly pay premium to stay in a "castle". Room was very large and clean however after a day walking around the lakes it would have been nice to have a TV in the room as we could hear everything from all other rooms and downstairs it was very noisy. Also no food or drink allowed in room there are several lists of fines you may incur in the welcome booklet aswell. The bathroom although was private it was down the hallway which was abit inconvenient. The price we paid for the room for the night you would have thought the tour round the castle would have been included. Over all it was ok for 1 night but couldn't have stayed longer.
Great hotel and staff very friendly , paying for the castle experience. Got one up from the most basic room and it was basic but nice big bed and a lovely shower. Really nice breakfast good quality produce. Loved the castle tour, the guide was so knowledgeable and really enthusiastic
When I booked I knew it was an older building. However, for the price o was disappointed not to have ANY food options in the evening at the hotel. The walk from the parking lot was more than I expected and access to the hotel requires ringing a bell. My biggest complaint is charging 5 star prices and giving very basic service. The Castle itself was as expected
This was a birthday weekend away. We arrived late on Friday (11pm) after a long drive and there was someone to greet us. Once we were installed in our room, there was just time for one drink in the bar - well we sat in a lounge actually. On the following day we signed up for a banquet meal which was quite an occasion. Drinks in the bar getting to know other guests and then a really good meal in a stunning dining room. On the Sunday morning before we left we went on the tour of the castle which was very interesting. All in all we had a great time.
Creaky floors, wonky doors, steep stairs and dark corridors - excellent. Food was superb served in candle-lit dining room fit for a king. With a quiet receptionist/ waiter/porter dressed in black it felt like a set for a Dracula movie.
This Castle has a charm and rustic quality that you will never forget from the Armour on the wall to creaky floors. The staff were down to earth great people from check in to fantastic meals and a tour you’ll not forget with enthusiasm like everyone that works there even the owners were around to welcome us.Thanks for the experience Scott and Cristina/Canada/Mexico
We stayed at Appleby Castle on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis. On arrival , parking was limited to four cars near the Castle the rest on the car park which the gates were locked at 11:30 every evening. The beautifully kept grounds with a woodland / river walk ,are a stone throw away from the Village with lots of coffee shops and well appointed amenities. At reception we were greeted by James the Butler who showed us to our room which was very traditional had tea / coffee making facilities no TV which was absolutely fine, the most comfortable bed with lovely fresh white linen sheets a large bright bathroom opposite our room. It’s been a long time since we have stayed in a Hotel without an en suite, however as that was our package deal it worked out fine.we had to pre order our meal and ate with the other guests , again at first thought a bit strange James served us drinks in the main hall and we all got chatting then ate together , it was all very special from the room setting to the Candelabras on the table, we were lucky that the other guests were great company ,I order ham hock , fillet steak and panna cotta all absolutely amazing cooked to perfection as was breakfast . I would definitely recommend staying for the experience
Unbeknown to me my wife had booked us into Appleby Castle as a surprise birthday present. We arrived in time to have a pre-dinner drink and meet the other guests with whom we would be dining. The atmosphere was friendly and informal. Dinner was excellent, and for the location and quality, the price of a bottle of wine not extortionate. We finished off our visit with a tour of the castle in the morning; think our guide would felt at home in the Royal Shakespeare Company. Finally a thank you to all the staff we met who made us very welcome
