This Castle has a charm and rustic quality that you will never forget from the Armour on the wall to creaky floors. The staff were down to earth great people from check in to fantastic meals and a tour you’ll not forget with enthusiasm like everyone that works there even the owners were around to welcome us.Thanks for the experience Scott and Cristina/Canada/Mexico
The photos look amazing, and the written history sounds great, but the facts are that this place is severely run down and needs investment! Rooms have bad electrics, stains, insects crawling around, and are poorly cleaned and maintained. You can't get on or off the grounds after 11pm, and it's a long walk from the car park to the hotel in the pitch blackness... we needed a torch just to get through the gate and up the long drive!! I wouldn't dream of suggesting anyone stay here, which is such a shame given its potential. Grubby, dirty, unhygienic, impractical and overpriced.
We stayed at Appleby Castle on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis. On arrival , parking was limited to four cars near the Castle the rest on the car park which the gates were locked at 11:30 every evening. The beautifully kept grounds with a woodland / river walk ,are a stone throw away from the Village with lots of coffee shops and well appointed amenities. At reception we were greeted by James the Butler who showed us to our room which was very traditional had tea / coffee making facilities no TV which was absolutely fine, the most comfortable bed with lovely fresh white linen sheets a large bright bathroom opposite our room. It’s been a long time since we have stayed in a Hotel without an en suite, however as that was our package deal it worked out fine.we had to pre order our meal and ate with the other guests , again at first thought a bit strange James served us drinks in the main hall and we all got chatting then ate together , it was all very special from the room setting to the Candelabras on the table, we were lucky that the other guests were great company ,I order ham hock , fillet steak and panna cotta all absolutely amazing cooked to perfection as was breakfast . I would definitely recommend staying for the experience
Unbeknown to me my wife had booked us into Appleby Castle as a surprise birthday present. We arrived in time to have a pre-dinner drink and meet the other guests with whom we would be dining. The atmosphere was friendly and informal. Dinner was excellent, and for the location and quality, the price of a bottle of wine not extortionate. We finished off our visit with a tour of the castle in the morning; think our guide would felt at home in the Royal Shakespeare Company. Finally a thank you to all the staff we met who made us very welcome
We looked online and were excited to be going to this place. We arrived and asked to see the feature rooms, to be told they don't allow that... so we booked the best room available, the red room... Canopied four poster, wall hangings, and a piece of history; absolutely what we were wanting. However... The lights kept fusing, and simply refused to work. These things happen, but the next hour was spent answering the door to a strange man who just tried the lights, fused, left... again and again and again! Finally, we were asked to change rooms... to one of the cottages OUTSIDE the castle building. By this time we had little choice, but we were so disappointed not to be in the historic house, not to have any of the facilities (the main house is locked up) and to have no character. As it turns out, we had to share our accommodations with several families of wood lice, who delighted in sharing our showers and baths, came to see what we were eating and drinking in the kitchen, slept with us... Disgusting!! We couldn't use the bar in the main house as we were staying outside... so we went out, however not for long because the gates are locked at 11.30!! The next morning we were denied a refund, despite the fact that the cottages are cheaper than the room we booked into, and they even tried to add extra for the inclusive breakfast!! One man was the manager, the ticket man, the chef, waitress, and anything else to be done... All in all, we were duped, conned, robbed blind and we stayed in accommodation Environmental Health should shut down.
I was traveling the UK with my girlfriend, and one of our goals during the trip was to "stay in a castle". This was a great spot! Located in a small town, it was very private, and gave us the history we crave.
We recently stayed at Appleby Castle! The owner and staff were friendly and so helpful in making our stay excellent. I would highly recommend Appleby for those that are interested in staying at a castle. The accommodations are clean and comfortable. We enjoyed a lovely breakfast and had a private tour of the castle. Definitely recommend!
My husband and I have just spent one of the best weekends ever at Appleby castle. From the moment we arrived to when we checked out, the staff couldn’t have been any more attentive All of the staff, including the chef made a point of chatting with all of the guests and they all work very hard. It’s a small team and they all seem to be able to turn their hand to any of the jobs that need to be done James the hotel manager, was particularly attentive and made sure we had everything we needed throughout our stay We stayed in the old servant quarters which are on the 4th floor and our room (Atkinson) was very quirky. The is a massive bed and lovely en suite bathroom but the floor in the bedroom is very uneven and all of the furniture is on a slant because of this. However this just adds to the experience We dined by candlelight in a private room and the food was absolutely delicious, as was the breakfast each morning We took the castle tour this morning with Kenneth and found this to be very interesting and informative Kenneth definitely has a passion for history! There are lovely walks around the castle grounds and we also met Mrs Nightingale, who owns the estate. A great weekend and we enjoyed every minute
Booked a room at the Appleby Castle , The Vipont bedroom and sent a text to request the reservation,I recieved an email confirming the room was available and my card was charged the sum of £446.55 for 2 nights, later that day we recieved an email saying the room had been double booked and that we could have upgrade which apparently had a en suite but didn't have the 4 poster bed we liked which made us book it in the first place. I was tempted to accept his offer but my wife didn't want to so I emailed and declined the offer and requested a full refund,2 days later we hadn't heard off Peter B and so I used Trip advisors website to cancel yhe booking to be told I would be charged £56.00 because he made an error and failed to say just contact Trip advisor within 24 hours and I would have got a full refund no problem. I am now having to contact my creditcard disputes to seek the outstanding balance. Peter B of the Appleby Castle another fine example of a crooked buisnessman
It is an amazing place to stay and dine. The accommodation is excellent - clean and tastefully furnished. We stayed in one of the cottages in the castle grounds. The food was first class. The castle and its history are fascinating and we had an excellent tour . The grounds are lovely and we went for some nice walks - it is very peaceful. There aren't many places as great as this to stay. Thank you to the staff for making it a memorable visit .
