This is as standard a business hotel as it gets. My husband and I were traveling from Tromsø to the Nordkapp as part of an anniversary trip, and stayed here one night at the end of September. When we made a reservation, we were only able to get twin beds, which was kind of a bummer. So a pleasant surprise when we checked in was that they had a normal double room for us. After an exhausting drive, we checked in, and I got the first shower. The main bad surprise, and reason for my dissatisfaction with the service, is that when I jumped into the shower and pumped the soap dispenser, it was empty after only two pumps. I lifted the cover to make sure it wasn't just a clogged dispenser. Nope, it was empty. I mean, I was traveling with my husband, so I was able to yell out to him, and he handed me the teeny bar of hand soap so I could finish showering. But, if this is mainly a business hotel — and it is — how does a solo traveler deal with something like that when they're already naked, wet, and unwashed? It's astonishing to me that housekeeping doesn't check that dispenser every single time they service a room. Another negative was that the clothes bar in the closet was a full foot higher than my husband's head, and he is 6' tall! At 5'1" (and with bad shoulders), I was unable to reach to hang up my own coat! What does the short business traveler do there? The closet seems like it was set up for professional basketball players. On the positive side, the bed was comfortable enough, the room was roomy and modern (although the weird little kitchenette unit crowds the hallway quite a bit, and the bathroom door and the room's door get in each other's way), the breakfast was generous and tasty, and the northern lights views in Alta are SPECTACULAR. Just bring your own soap, and a stepladder!
My wife booked a double room for us by phone for one night at the Thon hotel, Alta. When she informed the person she was speaking to that she (my wife) works for the Hammerfest kommune, she was offered a discounted price of 1045 Kr with the assurance that this would be confirmed by email. She never received the email but didn't worry. Sure enough, when we turned up on 30th August, our booking was entered on their system but we were now asked for over 1200 Kr. Despite protestations, the receptionist would not budge and stated that they didn't even have a rate of 1045, discounted or otherwise. The receptionist became quite abrupt. Unfortunately, this is not the first problem we've had with Thon hotels. We ended up walking out and that was that.
Frankly we have been on a 3 week tour and been as far north as we can and the hotel accomodations in the north seem to get worse when you get further north. Even though we were on a "premium escorted tour", premium accomodation is hard to come by up north. Sometimes you do wonder if the promised premium tour is really that at all. This hotel was actually quite decent . We strike gold and got a room with a small kitchenette , though can't remember if we used it at all. No coffee or tea facilities as usual. Room is clean , comfortable, and small of course. Bathroom is small with no extra amenities besides the bath and body wash gel screwed to the wall. Staff are friendly . Breakfast spread us average.
Room was comfortable and quiet. The bathroom was good. Grocery store across the street and lots of places to walk. Some of our group saw the northern lights but we didn't stay up. Breakfast was typical Scandinavian. Good for a night on the way to the north cape.
On a business trip to Alta in northern Norway I stayed at the Thon Alta hotel. I always get a friendly reception at Thon hotels, but it was extra friendly and helpful here. The room had comfortable beds, good lighting, an exceptionally good TV with many channels, nice bathroom. Breakfast was laid out in Peppe's Pizza next door, and was minimal but did the job. The hotel serves a dinner buffet at a reasonable price, and while food selection was minimal, standard was very, very high. Worth every penny! The hotel is in the heart of downtown, within walking distance to most venues. It is right next door to a shopping center. Highly recommended
Spacious bathroom with a shower good enough for one adult and one child. No telling of cold or hot water on shower handles. Micro cupboard-built-in kitchen. Safe. Minibar. Good breakfast. FYI: Thon Hotel Vica is closed down for good.
When I pay € 150, in Alta, I expect at least a good breakfast. The remainings of food were spread out at 4-6 "stations". The bread was poor bake-up, bacon not to be seen and no personell. I ended up with some hard bread and looked forward to lunch some other place.
Having the very best experiment staying at Thon Hotel Alta. Were taking good care of! Nice people in the reception, nice people in the restaurant, nice people everywhere! Nice rooms with comfortable beds.
This hotel is perfectly located downtown and in a short walking distance to the famous cathedral, restaurants and shopping. The hotel is located right next to Norwegian pizza house - Peppes Pizza, and the new shopping mall. Included in the price of this hotel is not only breakfast but also a dinner buffet. My room was very nice, great bathroom, super clean and very good beds.
After a day of driving in a good amount of rain, it was good to arrive at Alta with the sun shining. The hotel is in an area with a number of other hotels and beside a small shopping mall. The room was ample and clean. The reception staff was fine. We ate in the hotel restaurant which was set up for tour bus groups, and were pleased to be ahead of the rush. Breakfast was included and was served in the adjacent Peppe's Pizza. The breakfast was very good.
