Discovering Africa’s treasure: The island of Mauritius

Offering a beach vacation like no other, the African island of Mauritius thrives on tourism, but it’s not a country many Americans visit.

So few of us visit, in fact, that our cab driver from the airport to Grand Bay said that in his 20 years of picking up tourists from the airport, we were only the second Americans he’d met. Everywhere we went on Mauritius where the lingua franca is French (and as I attempted my pathetic grade-school French), we were greeted by local folks excited to meet people from the United States.

And here we were– in a cute “auberge” (budget hotel), looking at a sunrise over the ocean, enjoying our “petit dejeuner” (breakfast) — looking out at each other, and debating aloud whether we should let our fellow citizens know about this tucked-away island in the middle of the Indian ocean.

Rockin’ the boat: one family’s return to white water rafting

The George family takes on Colorado's Arkansas River!

The George family takes on Colorado's Arkansas River!

Some years ago, I was on a South American vacation that included a white water rafting trip on the Urubamba River in Peru.  What an experience!  And when my wife Jenny was twentysomething and single, she went white water rafting in Australia.  She and her friends went seeking adventure, and they sure found it on a wild ride rafting the Queensland River.

Years later, as parents, white water rafting conjured up images of almost losing our then ten-year old son, Zeke, to the rapids of a mighty river. So, we steered clear of rafting-focused family vacations… until recently. (more…)

San Francisco’s Parc 55 changes hands, again

San Francisco's Parc 55 Hotel

San Francisco's Parc 55 hotel

By Joe Brancatelli

Marriott made a big deal about San Francisco’s Parc 55 hotel back in 1998 when it reflagged the 1,000-room property as a Renaissance hotel. At the time, it was Marriott’s 1,500th hotel — a milestone that’s meaningless to business travelers but fraught with importance for lodging bigwigs. But that was then and this is now, and the Parc 55, once again an independent property, has found itself a new brand affiliation. It becomes a Wyndham later this month.

Top 10 tips for an unforgettable Italy vacation

Monday, April 26th, 2010

By Gale Bowman

Florence at dusk

Florence at dusk

Last September, I was fortunate to visit Italy during an amazing twelve day trip that consisted of stops in multiple cities via train, car — and even boat!

Of the many options available for a Europe Vacation, Italy is one of the most popular for a reason; it offers a wealth of history, culture, and attractions to suit the tastes of just about everyone. While most any itinerary to Italy can be fabulous, it pays to talk with others who have already been there. If you were to ask me for my two – or ten – cents on planning a great Italy vacation , here’s what I’d share…

American adds first class on regional jets

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

American AirlinesBy Joe Brancatelli

The 70-seat CRJ-700 series of regional jets is only slightly larger than the 37- and 50-seat RJs operated by the commuter affiliates of the major carriers. And now American Eagle, the wholly-owned commuter subsidiary of American Airlines, is adding a “first-class” cabin on the planes.

Matching arch-rival United Airlines, Eagle will retrofit 25 of its existing CRJ-700s with a first-class cabin and take delivery of 22 new ones with first class already installed. The new cabin, which debuts July 2, will feature nine seats in a 1-2 layout. Seats will have 37 inches of legroom and be 19.5 inches wide between the armrests. (The new cabin means the planes will now have 63 or 65 seats in total.)

Jon Snook, senior vice president of customer service, says Eagle’s first-class service will match that of AA’s mainline cabins. “The mission I’ve got is to make Eagle’s first-class service have the look and feel of the first-class cabin of our mainline jets. And when American serves a meal in first, Eagle will service a meal in first.”

Most of the two-class RJs will fly from American’s Chicago/O’Hare hub. They’ll be used both as a replacement for larger jets on some routes currently served by American and in combination with full-size American jets on other routes.

Free in-room Internet and other hotel news

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

hotelsBy Joe Brancatelli

  • Matching the benefit offered to some elite members of other hotel frequent guest programs, gold and platinum members of Marriott Rewards now receive free in-room Internet. But the new perk is limited to Marriott, JW Marriott and Renaissance hotels in the continental United States and Canada. Ritz-Carlton properties and Marriott’s growing collection of hotels and resorts in Hawaii will still ding elites for upwards of $15 a day.
  • The Blue, a 240-unit condo resort in Doral, just a few minutes from Miami International Airport, is rebranding itself as the Hyatt Miami at The Blue. Speaking of Florida, a 114-room Candlewood Suites has opened in Tallahassee.
  • A 102-room Homewood Suites by Hilton has opened in Bozeman, Montana.
  • Westin has opened a 340-room hotel in Austin, Texas. The Westin Austin at the Domain is within a purpose-built “neighborhood” that offers residential, office and retail space.

Exploring Africa: Cape Coast, Ghana

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010

By Bernard Pollack, BorderJumpers

At the Cape Coast Castle in Ghana they call it “the door of no return” — the final exit for thousands of slaves on their way to America and Europe. While in the castle, you can’t help but feel overwhelmed by the look, smell, and feel of the place. And standing there is a moment we’ll never forget.

Behind “The Door of No Return”

Door_of_No_Return_CapeCoast_GhanaIn the not too distant history, two million people arrived here from all over West Africa, some walking for hundreds of miles, many dying on the way. All of them crammed for weeks or months into dungeons — as many as a thousand were packed into a space the size of a small living room, without toilets, and without light. Many were raped or killed.

We understood immediately why President Obama and Michelle Obama made Cape Coast a trip here last July. It was humbling as Americans to stand here, face to face with our complicated history, unable to comprehend our decisions of the past. Yet, the thought of our President, an African-American, standing here, in this very spot, filled us with both pride and shame, something too difficult to explain with words.

Celebrating Earth Day with new sustainable series

Thursday, April 22nd, 2010
BorderJumper's Bernard Pollack and Danielle Nierenberg

BorderJumpers bloggers, Bernard Pollack and Danielle Nierenberg

Today we’re celebrating Earth Day by kicking off a new weekly series from Bernard Pollack and Danielle Nierenberg. They call themselves “BorderJumpers” and they’ll be sharing stories of their travels around the world, starting here today with the continent of Africa.

On this day that is as much about inspiring environmental awareness and appreciation as it is about celebrating the innovations that move us closer toward energy efficiency, sustainability, and a greener economy, we’re especially excited to share this series. That’s because Bernie and Danielle are traveling with a green purpose: they’ll be highlighting innovations across the world that offer sustainable ways of reducing hunger and poverty.

They’ve set out to tell stories of hope and success. They’ll be meeting with farmers, community organizers, workers, non-governmental organization, development agencies, and policy-makers to collect their stories, some of which will be shared here.

The first stop in our series? Cape Coast, Ghana, where Bernie and Danielle face “The Door of No Return” and experience the friendly flavor of Ghana.

For more about Bernie and Danielle and the important work they’re doing together, check out www.borderjumpers.org.

Aruba

Aruba
From Ian R. —
My wife and I have been taking our 2 teens to Aruba for 5 years straight. We stay at the Aruba Marriott Resort and Stellaris Casino, which has the cleanest, biggest beach. Our days are filled with snorkeling, shopping and lounging on the beach. Nighttime is for gambling (yes, as a family) and trying new restaurants (or revisiting our favorites). See more of my recommendations.
