This spring, on the edge of the open sands, is a regular stop on the 4WD circuit. Alternatively, it can be reached on a soft sand hike from the Rest House; the walk takes about 1½ hours return. Look for a white water tank at the opening of Wadi Shallalah. After the tank, a path climbs the hill to the spring.

Al Ramal Red Sand Dune Among the vast expanses of rust-coloured sand in the Wadi Rum desert, the Red Sand Dune, or ‘Al Hasany’ in Arabic, is one of the most famous ones. Officially named Al Ramal it has become better known by its descriptive name. It stands out against a cliff side like it is part of the mountain. Coloured red by the presence of iron oxide, this dune is fine and soft underfoot making it perfect to walk up barefoot! One activity our Bedouin guides are happy to share with guests is sandboarding!
Jebel Khazali
  • 30m
  • Admission ticket included
An easy siq to explore is the narrow fissure that cuts into Jebel Khazali. You can explore on foot for about 150m, far enough to appreciate the cool shade and to see inscriptions made by the ancients who used the siq for the same purpose. Look out for drawings of ostriches, pairs of feet and a woman giving birth. You need ropes and a guide to penetrate further and 4WD transport to reach the siq.

Little Bridge Wadi Rum has three well known rock arches; Burdah Rock Bridge, Um Frouth Rock Bridge and Little Bridge. The smallest of those, ‘Raqabat al Wadak’, is commonly known as ‘Little Bridge’. Little Bridge is a landmark at the centre of the Red Desert sites of Wadi Rum. It enjoys views over the intersection of the major valleys in Wadi Rum known as Khor al Ajram. The rock bridge is 4 metres above the rocks below and around 7 metres above the valley floor, therefore making it relatively easy to climb for visitors.
Lawrence's House
  • 30m
  • Admission ticket included
Lawrence’s House in Wadi Rum is called so because TE Lawrence reportedly slept here during his time in the desert. But actually the place has a much older history than its namesake. The British general who united Arab tribes to fight against the Ottoman Empire would have sheltered in this structure around 1917. But the house itself was erected on top of a pre-existing structure built by Nabataeans more than two thousand years ago. The structure was used as a station for passing caravans. As such, the Bedouin people have a different name for this place which translates as “The Small Palace”. Whichever name you use, it is clearly a site steeped in history that continues to fascinate people to this day.

It’s easy to see how this landmark gets its name — Mushroom Rock stands boldly out against the flat sandy valley surrounding it. A favourite photo opportunity of visitors to Wadi Rum. The rounded head is perched on top of stone stem. Its odd formation is completely natural. Over centuries of wind and rain, the softer layers of sedimentary rock at the base of the structure eroded much faster than the hardened layer above. This spot also signifies something other than an amazing photo opportunity. It also provides a sheltered area where you can find respite from the desert heat. In past times this drew Bedouin herders to this rock.

Burdah Rock Bridge For many, it is enough to see this magnificent structure from a distance. Of the tons of ancient rock found throughout Wadi Rum, much has already been eroded away. The wind has carved twisted and jagged shapes out of the softer pockets of granite and sandstone. Among the most distinctive of these features are the rock bridges—and among the most striking of these natural arches is Burdah Rock Bridge.

UM FROUTH ROCK BRIDGE Looking from the ground up at Um Frouth Rock Bridge it’s impossible not to feel awe at this impressive structure, a massive stone slab balanced between two tall peaks. It’s a bit of a scramble to the top, up a smooth slope and along a rocky edge, but once you reach it the views are even more impressive than from below. Leave your camera with somebody on the ground and get them to snap a picture of you silhouetted against the endless sky.

Abu Khashaba Canyon The canyon is notable as it is narrow and sandy so it can not be passed with 4×4. As it cuts completely through the sandstone mountain it is possible to enter at one end and exit at the other. During tours your guide will drive the tour vehicle around the mountain while you walk through the canyon. This will provide an opportunity to walk over the sandy rise and meet your guide at the other side. It offers an opportunity to stretch your legs and take some respite from the desert heat. Breaking up the experience on the back of the open top 4×4 tour around the Wadi Rum desert. It takes around 20 minutes to walk through the canyon. This gives your guide enough time to pass around the mountain with the 4×4.

Depending on the time of year, the sun sets anywhere between 16.30 and 19.45 in the afternoon. Sunset is a stunning transformation of colors. It is a real color frenzy. The sky slowly turns from a soft blue to intense orange, to a burning red. As the sun sets, the sky turns pink, followed by purple, a dusty grey, and heavy dusk. And finally, the star-filled abyss of black is all that is left for the night.
Day 2: Jabal Um Addami Mountain Hike + WHITE DESERT

Jabal Um Addami Mountain Hike This is a magnificent drive through the far valleys of Wadi Rum and crossing the beautiful and lonely Wadi Saabit. Upon arrival you will have a guided hike to the top which usually takes about 2 1/2 hours. You’ll hike up Jabal Um Addami and then after resting at the top, you’ll descend to a nice secluded area. While you rest and explore the area, your guide will start cooking your lunch. After the lunch you can hike for 2 hours and then we drive you back.

WHITE DESERT JEEP TOURS The white desert is named as such because it does not have the iron oxide red colours. Its yellow in color, more familiar to sandy desert landscapes. It was however included into the Protected Area due to it beautiful scenery. As well as the different color, the sandstone is softer and has eroded much more quickly. This has created very different landscapes, with vast valleys and smaller rocky outcrops. Therefore offering vast viewpoints and a greater understanding of the expanses of the desert
