Overview

  • Discover two completely different sides of the Netherlands on this half-day private tour: historic Delft and modern Rotterdam. This activity includes 2 private walking tours of about 2 hours each, and a transfer from one city to the other.

In Delft, your guide takes you through the Dutch Golden Age: canals, churches, and the stories of Vermeer, William of Orange, and Antony van Leeuwenhoek.

In Rotterdam, you explore a city bombed flat in 1940 and rebuilt as a showcase of bold architecture, including a visit inside one of the iconic Cube Houses.

You can do the tour in either direction, starting in Delft or Rotterdam. Pickup and drop-off from other locations, including Amsterdam, can also be arranged.

This is a private tour. You set the pace, and if you have special requests or an interest in a certain topic, just let us know.

Activity itinerary

Museum Prinsenhof Delft

  • 10m
As you walk into the city, you pass through the Prinsenhof. This place played a decisive role in Dutch history, and your guide tells you why.

Old Church

  • 10m
You are now in Delft's old beer brewing quarter. Where did all the brewers go? You also see the Old Church, perhaps the most recognizable building in the city. How old is it exactly, and why does its tower lean? Your guide knows!

Gemeenlandshuis van Delfland

  • 10m
Close to the Old Church, you see the richly decorated facade of the Gemeenlandshuis. What is this building, and why was it so important?

Stadhuis van Delft (City Hall Delft)

  • 15m
Parts of Delft's old town hall date back to the 13th century, which makes it one of the oldest buildings in the city. You pass it as you walk onto the Market Square on your way to the New Church, and your guide tells you what makes it so interesting.

Nieuwe Kerk

  • 10m
This is the second-tallest church in the Netherlands, and the Dutch royal family is buried here. Why in Delft? If you like, your guide can get you tickets to climb the tower. Be warned: it is quite a climb!

Armamentarium

  • 30m
Leaving the Market Square, you walk along the oldest canal of Delft. In the south of the city center, you pass the former armory of the States of Holland and an office of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). You learn about Delft's role in the Golden Age of the Dutch Republic, and nearby you see the exact spot where Vermeer stood when he painted his famous View of Delft.

Maria van Jessekerk

  • 25m
Heading back north, you pass the first Catholic church built in the center of Delft. There is something funny about its two towers... It also stands on the spot where Vermeer lived and made his paintings.

Beestenmarkt

  • 10m
Finally, you pass the Beestenmarkt, the coziest square in Delft and perfect for lunch or a beer. In the past, this square had a very different function.

Station Delft - Delft Railway Station

  • 18m
  • Admission ticket included
You walk to the station and take the train to Rotterdam Blaak, just 18 minutes away. The ticket is included in the price of this tour. On the way, you pass farmland and the city of Schiedam. Enjoy one of the best public transport systems in Europe!

Kijk-Kubus Museum-house

  • 15m
  • Admission ticket included
As soon as you get off the train in Rotterdam, you see a peculiar set of homes: the Cube Houses by Piet Blom, designed in the 1970s around the idea of a 'village inside a city'. You go inside one of them, and the entrance fee is included in the tour price.

Old Harbour

  • 15m
After the Cube Houses, you enter the Oude Haven (Old Harbour), now a lively area with lots of terraces. You see more of Piet Blom's architecture and old ships moored here for restoration.

Witte Huis

  • 15m
The most prominent building next to the Old Harbour is the White House (Het Witte Huis). Dating from 1898, it is the oldest skyscraper in Europe and one of the few buildings that survived the bombing of Rotterdam.

Markthal

  • 20m
Walking back toward Blaak, you go inside the impressive Markthal (Market Hall), with apartments on both sides and food from all over the world inside. And don't forget to look up at one of the biggest artworks in the world!

Grote of Sint-Laurenskerk

  • 15m
Right next to the modern Markthal stands a 14th-century church whose tower miraculously survived the bombing of Rotterdam. Today it is mostly used for events.

Rotterdam Blaak

  • 10m
The tour ends around Blaak, where the original dam in the river Rotte was built (yes, Rotte-dam). On Tuesdays and Saturdays there is a big outdoor market here. From here you can explore Rotterdam further, or easily take a train home.
