What you can expect

  • Tour the famed sites of Vientiane, the capital city of Laos, and see more than 200 Buddhist and Hindu statues at the interesting Buddha Park. Visit ancient temples, appreciate Lao architecture, savor a traditional Lao meal, and take in a beautiful sunset view near the Mekong River.

At Vientiane's oldest surviving monastery, Wat Si Saket, gaze at the many eye-level murals that depict stories of the past lives of Buddha and walk around the cloister that opens into the sky. Next, visit Wat Ho Phra Keo, initially built as a royal chapel, which houses a small museum. Marvel at the stone balustrade of each temple stair that features a fierce dragon.

Stop by the Patuxai monument, which resembles the Arc de Triumph, for a photo opportunity. Then continue to Pha That Luang, a large golden stupa and a national symbol, and admire the almost fortress-like stupa that stands 148 feet (45 m) tall. After a delicious lunch, take the opportunity to shop for souvenirs at Ban Nong Bouathong weaving village.

Stroll through Buddha Park—a collection of curious, ornate Buddhist and Hindu sculptures—and climb atop a pumpkin-like statue with 3 levels that symbolize hell, earth, and heaven to get a bird's-eye view of the park. Follow your guide to a bar near the Mekong River for a refreshing, non-alcoholic drink and an impressive view of the warm sunset.
