Begin your journey with a walk through the lush, manicured gardens surrounding the temple. As you ascend the stone corridors, adorned with over 2,000 relief panels, travel through a physical representation of Buddhist cosmology. The transition from the lower levels to the circular upper platforms symbolizes the journey toward enlightenment.

Reaching the upper terraces, be met by 72 perforated stupas, each housing a statue of the Buddha. In the late afternoon, the sunlight hits the volcanic stone at a sharp angle, casting long, dramatic shadows and highlighting the intricate textures of the carvings. This is the perfect time for photography, as the “Golden Hour” bathes the entire valley in a warm, amber glow.

Looking eastward from the temple's heights, the horizon is dominated by the silhouette of Mount Merapi, Indonesia’s most active volcano. On clear days, the view is breathtaking. See the massive peaks of Merapi and its neighbor, Merbabu, towering over the emerald-green jungle.

If nature permits, you may witness thin plumes of white smoke or “solfatara” rising gracefully from the crater—a reminder of the raw power of the earth contrasting with the stillness of the temple.

As the sun begins to dip behind the Menoreh Hills to the west, the sky turns into a canvas of deep oranges, soft purples, and burning reds. Standing among the ancient stupas as the horizon glows is a deeply meditative experience. The panoramic view covers the entire Kedu Plain, often veiled in a light evening mist that makes the landscape look like an ancient painting.
