What you can expect
Meet your guide, Catrina, at the Valley Waters Fossil and Information Centre to learn about the many fossil discoveries in the region. From there, drive to the walking trail that leads to the Moosehorn Creek Covered Bridge, a locality associated with the discovery of the Norton Fossil Forest, the oldest and largest fossil forest in Canada and one of the key geosites for Stonehammer UNESCO Global Geopark.
Proceed to hike the location, exploring rock exposures where hundreds of fossilized trees and other fossils associated with a forest that was growing near the equator over 300 million years ago have been uncovered. Learn about this ancient ecosystem and how it got preserved, and discover evidence of how an earthquake led to the exquisite preservation of a unique fossil tree found only here.
Your guide, Catrina is an enthusiastic and engaging geoscience educator and heritage interpreter with a passion for the region and an ability to bring stories of the Earth, preserved in stone, to life.
*Please note that it is illegal to collect fossils in New Brunswick without a permit. There will be no excavating or collection of fossils on this tour.
