What you can expect

  • Begin your adventure at Caño Hondo/Sabana de La Mar port. Hike for around 3 hours through the humid forest of Los Haitises National Park. Learn about the medicinal plants of the area, see the broadleaf rainforest, and reach the spring of the Jivales River, which feeds the natural pools of Eco-lodge Caño Hondo.

    Next, gear up with lifejackets and hop into your kayak. Paddle through bird-filled mangroves and rolling hills of lush vegetation. Land at the open San Lorenzo Bay, where you can photograph the rugged forest landscape.

    Learn about the park’s original inhabitants, the Taino Indians, and the steep limestone formations that give the park its name, “Haitises,” meaning highlands or hills.
