Once an industrial hub and the birthplace of Philips, Eindhoven reinvented itself into the City of Light and the capital of Dutch innovation. During this private guided tour, your guide explains how creativity, modern architecture, and design culture shaped the city’s unique identity.

Depending on your interests, you can explore Strijp-S, the former Philips factory district turned creative hotspot, or walk through the city center with its bold post-war architecture and modern public spaces. Because this is a private walking tour, the route and focus can be adapted to you.

Activity itinerary

18 Septemberplein
  • 20m
The 18 Septemberplein, named after the day Eindhoven was liberated in World War II. To keep the square as free as possible from cyclists, an underground bicycle parking was built, the 'Tube.' The unique entrances to the bike cellar, resembling tubes emerging from the ground, especially catch the attention. However, what many people may not know is that archaeological finds are on display in this bicycle cellar. These ruins came to light through excavation work, revealing parts of a 700-year-old gateway, for example.
De Blob
  • 20m
The Blob, where Blob is an abbreviation for 'Binary Large OBject.' In architecture, BLOB refers to a style where the exterior of a building has irregular shapes. On the other side of the 18 Septemberplein stands a similar structure, the Bubble. As the name suggests, it is a soap bubble, but made of glass and steel. The Bubble is often considered the little sister of the Blob. However, this structure was designed by a different architect, namely Tarra architecture and urban planning.
Lichttoren
  • 20m
You'll also see the Lichttoren on your walking tour. It owes its name to the lamp factory that was once located there. The burning lamps in the evening were visible far into the surroundings.
Philips Museum
  • 20m
The Philips Museum is a must-see during your stroll. It is located in the building of Philips' first light bulb factory. Various manufacturers had occupied the building until a fire broke out, leaving almost nothing of it. The reconstruction began in 1888, and in 1891, Gerard Philips purchased the building. The museum takes you through the story of the first light bulb factory, showcasing the significant innovations Philips has made for over 120 years. During the tour, you only visit the museum externally.
Dommel Tunnel
  • 10m
After seeing the Grote Markt and visiting other museums like the Van Abbemuseum and the DAF Museum, you pass through the Dommel tunnel, known for its unique murals. The paintings are inspired by the Monty Python sketch "The Ministry of Silly Walks." Some know the tunnel as the "Silly Walks Tunnel."
