HORRENDOUS EXPERIENCE - BE WARNED!!!!
We never got to see the property. I finally managed to get hold of the host on day before check in and she asked to meet us in Monaco to hand over the keys (Strange). When we met she said the house had a water leak & offered us a tiny Studio flat the size of a small kitchen for 4 men until it was fixed! The host handed the key for the studio over to one of the men, and because he took it we were deemed to have accepted a tiny studio for one person in lieu of a 5 bedroom house. I contacted Vrbo and apparently this is allowed in their T & C’s, which the host obviously knew, as she quoted it as legally binding. Worried that we now had no suitable accommodation I called VRBO as we had not seen the house, and needed to urgently source beds for the guys. I asked VRBO to escalate as I was worried that we had paid almost £6,000 for accommodation that was not available. I was on the phone approximately 12 hours over 2 days, to customer service in USA, expressing my worry that anyone could rent an studio for 2 days, get you to take the keys thinking its theirs to rent, then disappear with the money, which is released immediately after your check in. 2 days after we were supposed to check in the host called and said the house was now ready and we could go to it. I did not want to do this as we had managed to book an alternative and I was dubious as to the hosts motive. She then proceeded to swear and threaten me 40 min on phone. How can this be acceptable? Nightmare experience!!!
