Rydges Capital Hill

We have usually had a great stay in Canberra and the Rydges, Capital Hill is convenient, relatively cheap and of good value for money. It therefore saddens me to say that this trip was not a happy one. Not only did our room not get cleaned until just before 4.00pm yesterday, 10th January ( and then only after I approached management) but when I signed out this morning (11th January 2018) they wanted to charge me for breakfast. Now I had thought that the original bill I paid in full was wrong but I also questioned and clarified with the person at the counter on check in and the bill I paid then in good faith was presumed to have been complete. What upset me most, yesterday and this morning, was the brusque manner of the staff at the checkout desks. Effectively staff were implying that what we say (them) cannot be trusted. They said it was my duty to go back to the original document. In this case that was tricky. I had upgraded over the phone and no new documents were sent to confirm that upgrade. Let me state that if staff at the front desk are brusque and presume the customer is in the wrong there is a problem with management; either through neglect of training or through their own example. I also have some general comments about this Rydges property. There are no toilet brushes in the rooms. The carpets in hallways and dining areas are dirty. The bar was unattended. But most importantly the tone of staff is not acceptable. That must come from Management and while it is conveniently located and value for money I wonder if I shall return.

I wanted to give this place 5 stars, I wanted to love it but one thing lets it down - Cleanliness! Check in was a breeze and friendly and our room was a really good size. There were 3 of us and with two beds in it there was still room to move. Beds were very comfortable and made for a great sleep and the bathroom renovated. What is to fault? When I looked behind bathroom door it hadn't been cleaned in a while and it makes you start to wonder what else hasn't been cleaned. The pool was not warm and at 9.30am the next day dirty towels were still sitting there from the day before with no new towels provided. But the main problem was the dining area. We had breakfast included in our deal and both mornings we found multiple plates, bowls and cutlery dirty. We had dinner there one night and our glasses were covered in finger prints and we had to ask for more cutlery as they were dirty. Looking out the windows they are covered in cobwebs and dust. Location is good and as I said rooms were good value. This place needs a good clean and it would be a 5 star. It leaves the impression they don't really care. I also provided this feedback on check out.

After a ruff night in another hotel we booked in to the Rydges from the phone call the staff were great polite helpful the room was amazing we had the honeymoon suite. We ate in Fig Tree and the food was delicious again with friendly staff. Will definitely be back. Thanks Chris you were delightful and Alex too.

Travelled from Qld to visit the War memorial Parliament House etc with my wife & 2 children. We reserved 2 rooms adjoining, the air conditioning was not working on arrival which we made known to the front desk staff, they said they would look into it. The second night on arrival back to hotel on the way out we saw a large number of fans we went to the front desk again as we suspected that the air con was still not working, we were only allowed 1 fan as they had been prioritised needless to say was an extremely hot night even by our standards being Qlder's. We all crammed into 1 room to get a little respite from the heat unfortunately a little uncomfortable with 4 in a very small room with 1 fan, would never stay at Rydges again.

Two nights in the superior king room and cannot fault it. Stayed for a NYE weekend getaway with friends, and was well situated for seeing the sights (eg, 20 minute walk to the lake for NYE fireworks, gallary, questacon etc). Key points: large recently renovated room; great facilities (pool looked lovely but didnt make it in); lounge areas were large and underutilized by guests (we regretted not packing scrabble or cards); clean (didnt spot anything that make me think "ew"; plenty of parking and spacious common areas; and friendly, helpful staff.

From the moment we checked in we were given a filthy room with dirty sinks with hair, red wine spilled on the desk, un made beds, full garbage bags, and half drunk water bottles. We have stayed here before and booked the same level of accomodation but received a room half the size, it was old, dated, dark and smelt mouldy. We went back to the front desk to advise of their error, was simply give the keys to the adjoining room which was at least cleaned but still as described above. We had dinner in the restaurant, service was horrible, food over cooked, and very expensive. The indoor pool was cold, and the spa was fully of soapy water. So we didn’t go swimming. Breakfast the buffet was simply a joke, all the plates available were dirty and customers were left waiting in the queue waiting for food which was constantly running out. Everyone was complaining. On check out we got charged approx $400 more then our booking, additional charges everywhere on thing we didn’t do, nor purchased. Our room rate was $179 and we got charged $266per night. As Rydges members thought we may have been offered an upgrade or at least a late check out because of all their stuff ups.... but no, their pathetic service continued to the very end. Horrible. Last time I ever stay here or any other Rydges, best advice I can give is avoid this place if you want comfortable family surrounds, clean rooms and good service! If you want to get ripped off and stay in dirty rooms where they don’t provide any service - this is you place! Happy holidays!

We stayed at Rydges Capital Hill Canberra for a night on boxing day because we took the kids to Questacon and to visit the city. We stayed in the superior twin room which has 2 queen size beds. It suited us perfectly. We have a 2 years old and a 4 years old, so we put the beds together to make a massive bed for all of us to sleep on. The room is enough size for us no need for a family room, but baring in mind that we really only stayed in the room for sleeping. We also used the swimming pool. It was a little cold but the kids loved it regardless. We didn't use the breakfast so can't comment on the food. The hotel was clean and presentable with Christmas decorations. Overall, it was a wonderful overnight stay for us. Kids and family friendly!

I stayed for four nights at Rydges Capital Hill for a family Xmas in Canberra ( yes I know most people leave , but my son and daughter in law live there ) I chose Rydges because I am a member and I know I can get good deals on multi day stays, as indeed I did. It was $108 per night ( though I upgraded from Queen to King for $10 per night just before arrival ) The whole town was quiet ( I refuse to call it a city ) as was the hotel The room upgrade was offered by email and then involved a saga as the interactive email didn’t work , but eventually it was settled Of course much was closed , including the bar , but the Fig Tree Restaurant offered equivalent service and the breakfast , cheaper if booked , is always a highlight I did not eat an evening meal there on this trip The room was very comfortable and all amenities worked well It is an older hotel so bathrooms have recently been renovated and the walk in shower cubicle was great , though as I age I do wish there was at least one rail , not a big one even It was peaceful and relaxing The minibar was well stocked, too well stocked for an old soak like me , but it was Xmas! It is close to most things I like in Canberra , like the Kingston foreshore and it’s eateries , Manuka shops , the National Gallery and on Canberra Avenue it is but a short trip to Queanbeyan or the airport One suggestion though As an older style hotel power outlets are at floor level and not easy to use A number of hotels these days use power cubes , with several outlets and USB on an extension lead to the desk top . We all need to charge two or more devices so a small investment might be a really good idea for little outlay Staff deserve merit points for courteous service

We thought we would have a staycation for NYE. It was great watching the fireworks in complete comfort. The buffet breakfast was packed!?! and had enough variety to appeal to everyone. As we had late checkout, we went and had another snooze. Great for families, pool, gym, spa, close to shops and coles. Manuka oval and parliament house very close. Older hotel close to everything = good value!

I got the best welcome by Georgie, she is a star: helpful, friendly, professional, very courteous. The hotel has a beautiful indoor garden with restaurant called Figtree, food is good, service ok, only problem: dreadful coffee with breakfast buffet. The nearby shopping/eating district of Manuka is very pleasant, 700 m away. Enjoy! Mariana Amar
