Chose this hotel due to its proximity to my morning meetings and also because of PGR benefits and rates. Asked for and received a free suite upgrade (appreciated - thanks), good room size (although felt like I was in a 1970s disco decor) but ceiling lighting very dim making room appear more tired than probably is. Room cold, aircon unit cover missing, couldn't adjust but used extra blanket (which has seen better days) to overcome. Bathroom nicely modern with good water pressure, and small kitchenette/fridge useful. Enjoyed the standard range of breakfast buffet items and with underground parking at a reasonable rate of $12/night, was set for the next morning. Hotel is fine for 1-2 nights but for longer stays in Canberra, might want to explore a facility with more character and modern refinement, or wait until this Rydges is renovated to compete with other competitive accommodation options.
I need to call out that I booked this hotel at the last minute and paid a premium - over $900 for 3 nights. This included breakfast and parking (I'll get to both of these later). Checkin took place after 10pm and was efficient and friendly. The room was clean. Up to now no problems. This changed at breakfast. It was a buffet and when my wife and I arrived there were lots of food stations that needed to be topped up with none of the staff attempting to do it. In the end I asked for specific items to be replaced. In the restaurant the tables were all dirty, ie. had not been cleared from previous diners. We had to wait until a table was cleared. This was not helped by the fact that only 3 staff were working (it was a Saturday morning). The next issue we had was on return to the room in the evening we found the bed was made by simply pulling up the sheet, no straightening of sheet or doona, just pull up as is.This meant for the first time in all our travels we actually had to make the bed ourselves. We could have called housekeeping but it was late and we wanted to sleep. It's worth noting parking is a separate cost - $12 p/n. Check out again, was efficient. We normally stay at the Avenue, East or the Realm in Canberra. We'll stick to one of those in future.
We arrived in our room to find that under the toilet seat had not been cleaned. It was very dirty. After mentioning it at reception the following morning, arrived back later to find that it still wasn't done.
Went to Canberra for Easter and stayed at Rydges. Rooms are tired and need a good coat of paint. Bathroom was quite nice but tiles in shower could do with scrub. Water drainage in shower was slow and water going out to bathroom floor. Great powerful hair dryer. Need fans in bathroom as mirrors fog up. Bed was comfortable enough and slept quite well. Carpets could be updated throughout. Was sharing with my sister and had to share a bed. Couldn't get two beds unless payed more for room with sofa bed. Buffet breakfast wasn't too bad but only scrambled eggs and boiled. Staff struggled coping to clear tables when it became busy. Cups particularly were all marked one day, you had to search for a clean one without marks. Not good for the prices you pay. Generally a good choice of food to eat. Went to the gym. Bikes mostly had broken pedals and need fixing. Plenty of basic equipment but maybe some updated cardio. Was very hot working out, air conditioning needed turning up. Pool area was nice and clean. Good to have water supplied. Luckily had free parking thrown in, but generally have to pay for this. The price we payed for accommodation, it should be free. Staff generally very friendly and helpful. Was easy to get to everywhere we wanted to go. A good little shopping centre nearby with a beautiful Italian restaurant. Tea and coffee supplied which is appreciated. There is a nice bar at the front of the resort where we watched the football. Reception area nice. Lifts were always quick. Plenty of car parking underneath. Nice of hotel to put on an Easter egg hunt and colouring comp for the kids, they loved it. Generally comfortable and clean but for the price you pay it is getting tired.
Accomodation and facilities was pretty good, but the function dinner I attended was very average, with portion sizes small and tasting like they came out of the microwave with many people commenting that the entree which was just a small bread roll with butter was better than the mains and desert.
I attended a large function dinner on Easter Monday. We had paid $55 per head and were served paltry portions of very average food. On top of this, there were not enough staff to man the bar while ‘courses’ were being served. At least I got to exercise some/all of the calories off when walking down to the downstairs restaurant to get drinks for my table. People looking to book functions: avoid this place! (It was pleasant to stay at though.)
We enjoyed the gym and the breakfast buffet all the service was excellent. The zoo and the parliament House was also excellent. Gf he morning coffee is great. Ask Samuel....bright smiley guy. Excellent for families. Well located to all the sights.
The pros: beds are super comfortable and decent wifi and complimentary bfast and nice location. The cons : check in was perfunctory, pool was cold, exterior hotel windows needs cleaning. Will we be back? Most probably if we cannot find anywhere else with warmer pool.
There is nothing spectacular about it but the hotel is just very pleasant. The lobby is bright and open, staff was naturally kind and service minded throughout and I was provided with an exceptional room. The environment is quite calm. I was never disturbed by any noice. The location is very central with the parliament house within view. I can only identify two things to complain about: no cheese for breakfast and a WiFi connection on the slow side.
This visit to Rydges has been a disaster from start to finish. Firstly the manager refused to honour a publicly advertised deal because they already had enough bookings and didn’t need to ofer the deal any longer. I reluctantly kept the booking for a suite and when we arrived today on what is a very hot today the air conditioner had not been turned on and the room was oppressively hot. But worse was to come. The air conditioner in the lounge area wasn’t working and can’t be fixed over the weekend and the room is unusable. We have been offered a discount based on the rack rate for a cheaper room so the discount is small. After many years of returning to Rydges in Canberra a couple of times a year, it is time to start looking for an alternative. As a loyalty club member I feel I have been treated with distain. Not good enough.
