Harbour Hotel Fowey
Fowey is a bustling, yet charming harbor town along the South Cornish coast in the United Kingdom. Literary fans will know it as the adopted home of the late Daphne Du Maurier, author of Rebecca. It sits at the mouth of the River Fowey, from which it gets its name, and has a history that dates back to the Middle Ages. Wake up to riverside views, wander the charming streets, visit its various historical attractions, and enjoy a quiet getaway trip.
Where to Stay in Fowey
While there are a number of smaller villages, such as Polruan, Lescrow, and Torfrey, you will want to stay in the town of Fowey if you want to be near all the attractions and shops. Start off with a visit to the Fowey Tourist Information Centre to learn more about the town’s history and get some guidance on how to get around.
If you are hoping to get outside and enjoy the weather, walk along to the Fowey Town Quay Landing for views of the river or enjoy or a walk down to Readymoney Cove Beach for a swim. While you are visiting the cove, head over to St. Catherine’s Castle, which was built back in the 1530s under King Henry VIII to defend Fowey Harbour.
Rent or bring a car, pack a picnic, and visit either Restormel Castle in Lostwithiel or the Eden Project in Par. Restormel Castle is a circular shell-keep that dates all the way back to the 1200s and sits up high enough to give you beautiful views of the area while the Eden Project is a stunning indoor rainforest that is housed under massive biomes. Both are about 20 minutes from Fowey in different directions.
If you would rather enjoy the local area more, you will love visiting the different restaurants, partaking in the various water-related activities, and checking out the art galleries scattered around this colorful town. It also has a monthly Farmers Market, in case you happen to be visiting at the right time.
No matter where you stay both in and near Fowey, you will not be disappointed with your options. Most offer beautiful views, en-suite bathrooms, free on-site parking, free WiFi, and that Cornish charm. In town, the Fowey Hotel, Safe Harbour Inn, and Fowey Hall Hotel are all local favorites. Fowey Hotel, in particular, is a stand out as it is home to the AA Rosette-winning Spinnakers Restaurant with stunning views of the Fowey Estuary.
If you want to stay a little out of town, check out the Cormorant Hotel, a boutique hotel in Golant Village. It is less than a 10-minute drive from the town center. They also have a lovely walking path that is particularly beautiful when everything is in bloom.
