Hotels in Cresson

Cresson a small borough of Johnstown in central Pennsylvania. Named after American philanthropist, Elliot Cresson, the borough is home to a little under 2,000 people and sits within Cambria County. Besides being home to Mount Aloysius College, a small, Catholic college, it is also known as the summer homes of some famous Americans such as Andrew Carnegie and Charles M. Schwab. They say even President Abraham Lincoln stopped by to enjoy the area’s natural beauty once.

Where to Stay in Cresson

There are a number of places to stay in and around town. With many Cresson hotels offering quality customer service, free WiFi, and ideal locations, you should not have a problem finding a great place to stay.

Head over to Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site to learn more about one of the first railroads to cross through the Allegheny Mountains. Start off at the visitor center, where you can see different exhibits and hear more about its history. Then, make your way over to the Samuel Lemon House. It was once a popular tavern for passengers stopping by and is now a museum. If you would like to observe the current railroad of today, head over to Cresson Area Heritage Park, which has a viewing platform.

If you have a car, it is quite easy to visit a number of other historical towns and cities nearby. Loretto is less than a 10-minute drive away, and is known as the first English-speaking Catholic settled west of the Allegheny Front. Since its roots are in Catholicism, one of its top sites to see is the beautiful Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel. The church was a gift from local, Charles M. Schwab, and has Gothic architectural features. You can also visit the tomb and former chapel house of Father Demetrius Gallitzin, a former Russian Prince turned priest who gave Loretto its name. Another must-see is the stunning Mount Assisi Sunken Gardens & Renaissance Mansion across from Saint Francis University. Once Schwab’s summer estate, it is now open for the public to enjoy.

Ebensburg is also about a 10-minute drive from Cresson and finds its roots as a former Welsh colony in the late 1700s. The town became known for its beautiful nature and hospitality. Architecture lovers will enjoy a visit to the Cambria County Courthouse with its Victorian Second Empire architecture and stained glass dome. Learn more about Cambria County at the Historical Society and Museum, which is located in the restored A.W Buck House. Another interesting historical site is the Old Stone Jail, where you can tour 1870 cellblocks.

Hotels Near Cresson Airports

While Cresson does not have any airports specifically to itself, there are a few you can fly into to reach the town. The two closest are the Altoona-Blair County Airport and John Murtha Johnstown-Cambria County Airport. Both are only 30-minute drive away. However, since they are smaller airports, their destinations are fairly limited. They each have 100 and 114 hotels nearby.

Your best option is to fly into Pittsburgh International Airport and rent a car to drive the 2 hours to Cresson. It is a much bigger airport with destinations all around the United States and as far as Shanghai. If you need to stay overnight, there are 213 hotels near the airport.
