Old meets new in the busy German city of Frankfurt, where the European Central Bank and a futuristic skyline, sit happily alongside medieval buildings and world class museums. Romerberg, the city's old center, is home to the cathedral, the archaeological garden, and many old churches and fortified towers.
Frankfurt's best museums are grouped together on the banks of the River Main; here you'll find everything from art galleries and historical museums to specialist collections like the Icon Museum and the German Film Museum.
Flights to Frankfurt Airport (FRA) offer easy worldwide connections; this is the ninth busiest airport in the world. If you're hoping to visit Frankfurt itself, the fast S-Bahn trains from the airport will take you directly to city center. From the same place, you can also catch intercity trains to Mainz and Wiesbaden.
Frankfurt's U-Bahn underground system is fast, clean and efficient, and the preferred way to travel around the city center. For a change of pace from the museums and skyscrapers, visit the Palmengarten botanic gardens.
If you're visiting Frankfurt in March or April, don't miss the historic folk festival and fairground, the Dippemess. Avid readers won't want to miss the Frankfurt Book Fair in October; it s the largest in the world.
