What you can expect
Visit the samurai sword museum of one of Seki City’s preeminent sword makers, for the ultimate insight into the world of the katana. After the museum choose from a hands-on smithing experience, or wielding a blade yourself in a bamboo-cutting test.
Seki City in Gifu is renowned for its master swordsmiths, and on this tour you will have the complete Seki Samurai Experience.
Visit the Seki Hamano Museum and the attached store of one of the city’s most prominent sword manufacturers, followed by your choice of participating in the smithing process yourself, or a zen swordsmanship experience at a nearby temple guided by a samurai host!
After touring the sword museum, you will have a hands-on experience of your choice (selected when booking), to deepen your appreciation of the blades of Seki.
If you choose smithing, you will join the artisans at their work. Watch sparks fly as the masters heat and shape the blade, then pick up a blacksmiths beetle (a heavy hammer) and take a turn at pounding the steel yourself.
The lead craftsman in this experience will be a master smith from Seki’s prestigious line of Fujiwara swordsmiths.
Currently in its 25th and 26th generation, the Fujiwara family has been making high quality blades for over 700 years, and has made swords for the Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu, and several sumo champions throughout history.
If you choose the Zen sword experience, instead you’ll be guided to the impressive Ryutaiji Temple, which is said hold a secret treasure, the bones of a dragon. There you’ll change into a Japanese martial arts uniform and try the art of ‘iaigiri’ — cutting bamboo with a single stroke of the samurai sword. As part of this experience you will also practice Zen meditation, as a clear mind is essential for a clean cut.
Finally, at the end of the tour you will receive a souvenir related to your chosen experience.
