Several major airlines offer daily flights from Miami to Cancun, including US Airways, AeroMexico, United, Delta and American. All flights depart from Miami International Airport, which is conveniently located just 5 miles west of the city's downtown area.
Miami is home to an abundance of taxi companies, share-a-ride shuttles and private car services that will get you to the airport for a reasonable fee. If you choose to drive yourself, you'll find several parking options ranging from on-site covered parking for $17 per day, to off-site economy parking for $8 per day. As of July 2012, the easiest way to get to the airport will be the Metrorail's Orange Line. If you hold a Metrorail pass, you will be able to park at the rail station for up to 30 days for the very reasonable rate of $4 per day.
Once at the airport, you'll find an assortment of shops and restaurants to keep you busy while you wait for your flight. Each terminal has a variety of eateries that offer everything from quick beverages to grab-and-go snacks and full-service sit-down meals.
With its balmy weather and spectacular beaches, Cancun is one of Mexico's top tourist destinations. Almost six million people visit Cancun each year to soak up the sun, taste authentic Mexican cuisine and enjoy a variety of water sports that are available year round. Despite government travel warnings about many areas in Mexico, Cancun remains a safe and viable vacation destination.
Cancun International Airport is located less than 13 miles south of the city's center, with easy access to downtown via Carratera Federal 307, or to the beach areas via Boulevard Kulkullan. Although many taxis are available to take you to your final destination, most of the major hotels and resorts offer free shuttle service to and from the airport.
Cancun offers visitors a fairly stable year-round climate, with temperatures that generally range between the high 60s and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Although hurricanes are rare in this part of Mexico, June through November is considered hurricane season. If you choose to travel to Cancun during this part of the year, pack appropriate rain gear and be sure you know your hotel or resort's hurricane preparedness plans.
Visitors flock to Cancun to enjoy its spectacular beaches, participate in a variety of water sports, soak up the nightlife and maybe get a glimpse into Mexico's history. If your resort doesn't offer the activities you are looking for, simply walk along Cancun's waterfront "hotel zone" to find what you want. When the sun goes down, head over to Coco Bongo, where you will see everything from gymnasts to dancers while enjoying a tropical cocktail. The area is also home to many world-class golf courses, as well as historical sites such as the El Ray Ruins and Chichen Itza.
If you love the water, sun-drenched beaches and dancing until the sun comes up, you need to get on the next flight from Miami to Cancun. Whether you decide to be a typical tourist or live like a local, you'll find there are plenty of things to do for visitors of all ages.
