Fly to Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport
Situated on China's southeast coast, Xiamen offers an abundance of history, culture, and activity. The city proper is actually located on an island in the Taiwan Strait.
Of course, one of Xiamen's biggest tourist attractions is located off the coast of the main island. Gulangyu Island, which has historically been a Western enclave, is a small, carless island packed with architectural oddities.
The city's southern district has plenty to offer visitors. Take a stroll down the Zhongshan Walking Street, to shop at its over 200 stores, as well as enjoying the eclectic mix of Victorian and traditional Chinese architecture.
Getting around
The airport is located on the northeast sector of the island. If you fly to Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport (XMN), you will be only a few miles from the city center. You can make your way into the city via shuttle, bus, taxi or car rental.
The bus system in Xiamen is solid; Bus 28 will take you to the Gulangyu Island ferry terminal. Other buses will take you to the southern district, often with a terminus at Xiamen University.
Hints and tips
Check out the historic Nanputuo Temple which has been in operation since 1622. The Oversea Chinese Museum, also located in the southern district, is a cultural center dedicated to the history of Chinese individuals who reside overseas.
