Fly to Charleston International Airport
Charleston, South Carolina was one of the first US cities to pass a historical preservation ordinance, so its major draw for visitors is the wealth of beautiful historic buildings and landmarks. The historic district is compact and easily explored on foot, but the surrounding plantations are also must-sees. Boone Hall, with over three centuries of history, is one of the most visited and lies eight miles from downtown Charleston.
Charleston Museum, across the street from the visitor center, is a great place to start your visit. From there, you won't want to miss Fort Sumter, the island where the civil war began - approximately half an hour's ferry ride from Liberty Square. Back in Charleston, head to the French Quarter to view trendy art galleries and historic churches such as the French Huguenot Church.
Getting around
Following your flight into Charleston International Airport (CHS), take Bus 11 into downtown; the bus operates an hourly service. Alternatively, take a taxi, which should get you to downtown in around 20 minutes.
