We loved our stay. From the outside the hotel looks run down and not operational but once inside it is gorgeous. The staff were so nice and shared the history of the building. Beautiful old hotel from 1870. Each room is decorated differently. The staircase defines grand. Bed was very comfortable and it was so quiet. We will be back for sure.

Better to visit than stay

Front of building needs work! The breakfast almost got a pass: only beverage choice was milk, granola bars (very dry), (overripe bananas), cereal, yogurt, breakfast mini sandwiches. My spouse had complaints about everything. The room we had had needed an air purifier or something similar. It smelled off- not musty or aged, more like old grease. Room and bedding were clean, but could have used vacuuming- dusty at edges of carpet. I tried to turn down the thermostat to 65°for sleeping, but only went to 68° as some kind of control on it. The bathroom was immaculate except for white spots on the wallpaper opposite the sink. There were few channels on TV, the internet would not connect in the room, went down to front desk and it worked there and no problems after that, the phone in the room didn't work at all-not even a dial ton, the people above us made a lot of noise in the am, but the worst for me was not getting the room black at night (the shade didn't go down all the way and there were street lights right outside our window.) The bed was almost comfortable (we only had queen, no king available). I told the staff my husband didn't walk well, so staff pointed out the elevator, but our room was the farthest from main entrance as it could be and our daughter who is not a senior had one in the middle. There was one minifridge in the room in the center of the hall. My husband complained no ice in there and no ice machine; you have to pick it up at front desk. The elevator worked.

Historic grandeur that needs some TLC to retain its glory. Clean and pretty, but a bit forgotten, it seems.

The hotel is pretty cool because it is historic and on the main street. The rooms are small but again, it is a historic hotel. Noise comes from the halls easily. Our bed was a double, not the queen we reserved and it was also very noisy. I know it sounds bad :) but even the tiniest movements in the bed were loud and would wake me up. Comfort and cleanliness were okay. Also, bring a blow dryer if you use one, they are not included. Check in and out were extremely easy and quick.

GOOD: room clean and well kept, good water pressure, quiet hotels, bed and linens good BAD: the name of the place is Decker Hotel and Bar. but the bar and restaurant were closed. no note of this when i made the reservation. I wasn't able to get a clear answer as to if it was a temporary or permanent problem because the host who was there all weekend barely spoke english. He would answer but i really struggled to understand what he was saying.

Quaint historic hotel. The Presidential Suite was spacious and unique. Upgrades to the jacuzzi tub and bathroom provided added comfort. Staff very attentive. Only drawback was lack of restaurant on site and very limited breakfast - but other restaurants in walking distance. Pleasant stay after visiting nearby Maquoketa Caves.

Front desk was very nice and lobby is beautiful. This hotel is historic and has a very European feel in the rooms (high ceilings, bathrooms, antique furniture). Everything was spotless, bathrooms small but very clean and refreshed. Shower/tub was excellent and new. We didn't have a hair dryer in the room, but was able to ask for one without problem. Furnishings are very solid. It is currently the best option for the area, hands down. Small town downtown but many eating options all around. We will stay here again!

The place is beautiful if you like history take time to read the front desk newspaper clippings. The beds are very soft and bouncy they do not have a lot of support but I still slept. The neighboring spot is a car lot which uses very bright lights all night long so make sure to keep your blinds closed tightly. The lounge and restaurant were closed. We saw one staff member. He was very nice and attentive.
