One of the oldest mansions in Walla Walla, this house was built around 1880 and now serves as a museum depicting daily Victorian life on the frontier.

When built, the Kirkman’s home was one of the grandest residences in Walla Walla reflecting tastes of the day and wealth generated by the ranching business. Now the Victorian Italianate house remains the only example of its kind locally, though vestiges of early 20th century architecture can be found throughout Walla Walla.

In its heyday, the house was the setting for lavish entertaining, as well as for routine activities of daily American Victorian life. In addition to being home for the Kirkman’s, it also served as a boys’ dormitory for Whitman College from 1920-1924. During this time Walter Brattain, 1956 Nobel Prize winner for the co-invention of the transistor, studied in the home. The house was elected to the National Historic Register in December of 1974 and has been run as a non-profit organization since 1981.

"Great place to stay for a quick trip to W2. Did notice the toilets were pretty loud when flushed above or next door to our room. Parking was good and appreciated the complimentary coffee in the morning. Tried to use the in room coffee, but it wasn’t drinkable. "

"I very much enjoyed the room I had with a very nice and comfortable queen-size bed. The room had a very nice mini-fridge that held quite a bit of food. The air conditioning worked great, which was important, because the two days I was there it was very hot outside. And of course it had a microwave that worked very well. There was also a phone in the room, and local calls were free. The breakfast that came with the price of the room was just amazing. They had premixed batter to make Belgian Waffle with two waffle irons that were always kept hot. And I can't even list everything else that was offered for breakfast because the list would be too long. And every one of the staff that I contacted for one reason or another, they were quite friendly and helpful. Overall, for what I paid nightly for the room, I thought it was a real bargain for what I received in return. So I highly recommend the SureStay by Best Western in Walla Walla, Washington"
