Such a lovely historical building and nice lobby area, however, rooms and food need improvements. A lot of small things and touches were missing in the hotel and the room - the wifi and TV not working & only one of the two key cards was working which were rectified timely. The hotel ground had plastic rubbish and did not look well maintained. The room that we had was very spacious but it was a corner room and very dark. It's ok for us as we only stayed for one night, would not like to be in a dark room for long. The bathroom was modern and spacious but the bathtub was very slippery especially getting in and out, there was no extractor fan in the bathroom so condensation after a shower made the mirror and floor wet and slippery. The TV in the room was small for 4 star hotel standard & no turn down service. The safe box was not attached to the cupboard so it was useless as one could pick it up and run with it. We had half board & the food was ok not great for Paradore standard.
Located in the sleepy Central Portuguese town of Penalva do Costello, about 25 km from Viseu, is the Parador Casa da Insua Hotel. This is an 18th century baroque style manor house built on the orders of Luís de Albuquerque de Melo Pereira e Cácere, a military man and administrator who made his money in Brazil. What a beautiful place with English and French gardens, ponds, vineyards and orchards. I recommend you stay here, we had a lovely time.
We stayed for two nights half board in beautiful weather in mid September. Paradores are specialists at tastefully restoring historic buildings as hotels. This is a stunning recent example of their expertise made even better by preserving the best Albuquerque family rooms as a museum. The bedrooms are tastefully decorated, the beds comfortable, and the bathrooms well appointed. The staff were friendly and helpful. The dinners and breakfasts were of a high standard. You can drink the Casa's own produced wine with your meal and sample their own cheeses. The gardens are a delight and the outdoor pool has a sunny aspect. This is a restful part of Portugal away from city bustle and Algarve beach crowds. The towns of Viseu and Gouveia are worth your time and we also enjoyed some mountain walks. Just make sure that you are prepared in advance for the electronic tolls on the motorways!
Have been wanting to stay in this Parador ever since it became one a couple of years ago... Have spent two nights there this week. It didn't disappoint! The gardens are wonderful. The building is amazing. The food is fantastic. Really lovely!
Arrival & location 5/5. Our satnav found it easily. The location was perfect for an overnight stay between Ciudad Rodrigo and Pinhao. It's a beautiful 18C manor house and the only Parador in Portugal. Our 4th Parador in 4 days. Check-in was friendly and efficient. He showed us to our room and explained some of the history of the house. Room 4/5. Room 124 - a standard double. A good size room with a comfy king bed. Minibar, plenty of storage, safe and aircon. TV, though I struggled to get any International news channels. Wifi was fine. Bathroom 4/5. Bath with shower. Toilet and bidet. Hairdryer. Grounds 5/5. Gorgeous. Lovely old trees and fine formal gardens. A very pleasant pool area - we spent an hour chilling in the sun. The central courtyard is wonderful and evokes a powerful historical past. Dinner 5/5. We had booked the 1/2 board set menu, but paid the €5pp extra for the "tasting menu". It was 5 really wonderful courses of perfect size. Fine flavours and textures. You get a glass of white from the vineyard with the fish and a glass of red with the meat (a fine goat dish) included in the price. A really outstanding meal and by far the best of our trip. The service was excellent and the food superb. A really talented chef. Breakfast 5/5. Lots of choices. Excellent cold meats and cheeses. Nice pastries. Overall 5/5. We really enjoyed our one night stay here - we would have liked to have stayed longer. The building and grounds are gorgeous, the food is fabulous and the staff excellent. A really great hotel.
Stayed here for 2 wonderful nights & loved our most beautiful luxury suite so much. We had the best view of the gorgeous manicured french gardens. Don't expect fine dining in the restaurant but if your budget can extend to booking the top suite with the garden view you can imagine you are in a "french chateau" Thank you to the gentleman at reception for recommending this suite to us. It made our stay so memorable.
Visited the place for dinner. The grounds have beautiful manicured gardens. Lovely walk around the tall trees. Museum was grand! Good job at maintaining it's former glory. The state's wine selection and pairing (rose, white, and red) was delicious.
This is the only Parador outside Spain. It was excellent and a great base to visit Viseu and other gems such as Caramulo. The welcome was friendly and multilingual. We enjoyed a tour of the 'Private' rooms which were most impressive. Overall the food was excellent and we were able to eat both full meals from the menu of the day and also pick one course options from the a la carte menu. . The food was more innovative than usual Parador fare. Breakfast was just right for a days sightseeing. We arrived on a Tuesday and the restaurant staff seemed very stretched with just 2 very hardworking waitresses looking after a full dining room. On the Thursday there were more staff and the pressure seemed to ease. The staff were friendly and helpful. The pool was lovely once we found it in the extensive grounds with a welcome pool bar very close. The magnificent gardens seemed a little 'tired' and in need of some TLC but were lovely to walk in .The bedroom was large and the bed was one of the most comfortable that i have experienced in a hotel.possibly the room might have benefited from some blinds as with the wooden shutters open there was a feeling of being a little exposed. I did not manage to figure out the 'modern' computer type phone /message/alarm unit which seemed to have a mind of its own and changed colour randomly. We will go back.as this is a great hotel
This 18th Century manor house is beautiful and has wonderful gardens. Our room- a suite - would probably have been the best I'd ever stayed in had the wifi and TV been working correctly. We did mention it and it was repaired in the bedroom but not the lounge, and even then the TV was a little erratic and the wifi very slow. I have read reviews complaining that the hotel is in the middle of nowhere - what do these reviewers want the hotel to do, up sticks and move? Look at the map before you book! What I would say though is given it's remoteness, the Casa da Insua should offer more variety in terms of food. The restaurant menu was small and looked a little pricey. The room service menu was also very small. The staff were all very helpful and efficient but there didn't always seem to be enough of them and so there was sometimes a wait to get things done. If these minor issues were corrected, this could be an idyllic stay.
Nice parador hotel in the northern part of Portugal. The hotel has a large park with several museums and a cheese factory. this is not wat you expect in an Parador. The hotels offers the home made cheese also at breakfast which is very delightfull. Nice building in an historic setting with a church. The area around the parador is not very interesting except Visue at 20 km distance.
