Marriott's StreamSide Douglas at Vail3.0 out of 5.0

We spent 5 days at Marriott's Vacation Club in Vail. The location is great and the staff is helpful and courteous. The facility is showing it's age. We had a single bedroom unit on the second floor in Douglas. Our floor squeaked in many locations and we could hear every step the family upstairs took. Fortunately they went to bed about the same time we did. Two of the outdoor grills near our building were either out of order or worked poorly. The area is beautiful but the altitude is very hard to adjust to.
First of all, we loved the room. Yes, it faces the interstate but 50% or more of every hotel in Vail is close to the interstate so that's just something to expect. The fact that this is one of very few hotels in Vail that was grandfathered from the woodburning fireplace restriction is great...and they provide the firewood for free! So you can snuggle up to a fire in a well decorated and maintained room. The bed was great, the size of the deck was really nice - plenty of room to sit out there and relax. Parking could be kind of a pain, but for the time of year I was there I didn't have a problem. My biggest complaint is this - stupid me forgot my shave kit in the bathroom, I realized this when I checked in to my hotel in Denver that night and called to ask the front desk about options for getting it mailed to me. They said that nothing was found in the room. So that means that the housekeeping staff came across it while cleaning and took it for themselves (or at least they took the $70 bottle of cologne and tossed the rest). To me this is unacceptable. I know that the hotel can't completely control the honesty of their employees, but future guests should be aware of this and make certain to use the room safe for valuables and do a double sweep on check-out otherwise you'll lose whatever you left behind. I will absolutely stay here again, but I'll be more careful with my valuables next time as should you.
I liked the location just off I70 by the West Vail Exit. Good for our Vail snowmobile tour the next day. At $455 a night, it was pricey, but it was only one night. Two complaints: 1) The bed was extremely hard and uncomfortable. The smallest of movements would wake up the other person in the bed. And we both woke up with sore backs in the morning. I spend as many nights in hotels as as I do at home and I can say that any crappy Hampton Inn or Marriott Courtyard bed is far superior to the bed we slept in at the Marriott's StreamSide Douglas at Vail property. 2) There were 2 bathrooms in the "villa" (fancy name for hotel room in this case). One had a strong smell of sewer gas that didn't go away, even after I ran water in all the faucets. Can't say I've ever stayed in a hotel like that before. The "villa" did have a couple of nice amenities that we did not take advantage of: a wood-burning fireplace and DVD player with movies to rent in the office. The covered parking was nice, as it snowed that night. There was no restaurant on the property for breakfast that I was aware of either.
We just got back from a fantastic 6 night 7 day stay in the Douglas building, in a 1 Bed 2 Bath unit. We had a blast, conditions were incredible, and the Marriott Streamside and their staff definitely helped make our trip great. The only (very marginal) draw back is that the unit/building is clearly over due for modernization. The furniture in the room, kitchen appliances, and bathrooms are all in better than decent condition, but are unquestionably ready for an upgrade. If you are familiar with the Mountain Valley Lodge in Breckenridge- the Marriott Douglas in Vail is very noticeably more run down, but is otherwise functionally identical in value. The amenities are the same, the pool/hot tub set up are nearly identical and great, and the private shuttle system is INCREDIBLY efficient and valuable. The private shuttle for the Marriott leaves every 30 minutes from your front door and delivers you directly to skiing in Lionshead. We did not even realize we had this amenity when we booked, and thought we had to use the same Vail public transit that everyone else uses. NOPE. Private shuttles every 30 minutes, and they also go direct to and from Vail Village at night which is very useful. We will absolutely be back!!
We had a wonderful weekend getaway and enjoyed the villa, fireplace and pool that the property offered. We drove into town to enjoy the activities but mostly stayed on property and just relaxed and enjoyed the quiet!
Just completed an 8 night stay at the Marriott Streamside Douglas and loved it. We had a 1BR/2Bath condo that sleeps 8. The furnishings were standard Marriott quality and really liked having the second bathroom. The king bed was very comfortable. The recreation center is much better than resorts of this size and the indoor/outdoor pool was heated enough that I would use it. The staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. Will definitely be back.
We stayed for one night in the StreamSide to go hiking in Vail, and couldn't have been happier. Our family stayed in a 2 bedroom (one loft) condo. The condos were very well equipped, and it was nice not having to sleep on a sofa bed. The pool is nice and big, and very warm. The staff had set up a smores station which was nice. Even though it was off the mountain, it was still pretty easy to get from the hotel to the gondolas, and the villiage. We had a great stay.
We were visitors here. Kind 'interesting' getting into the resort for sure with the traffic circles and small gate way. Property being in Vail is right up against the foot hills. Seems to be maintained nicely. I thought the interior was a bit drab but that was just the paint color. The interior of the suites? Very nice. Great Master BR and bath! huge as a matter of fact. Nice kitchen, dinette and living area with fireplace. View was ok as well. Not spectacular but good. Great for a family gathering, base for exploring...I kinda liked it.
We returned to Marriott Streamside after having a great stay the year before in Birch. That did not prepare us for our inferior accommodations we found at Douglas. It was a cramped 2 bedroom that had NO SCREENS on the 2 patio doors we needed to open since the 2 windows that could open only opened a very liitle bit, making it very stuffy and uncomfortable ( no a/c) .The shower in the 2nd bathroom was so small that you could barely turn around in it. I was not happy that there was a wood-burning fireplace, rather than the gas fireplace in Birch. Those were the good points. The worst part of Marriott is the rude manager, Julian, who totally mishandled a major issue we had with the management allowing a housekeeper to enter the room without permission and with the resort DO NOT DISTURB sign on the door. A simple request for coffee and towels to be left outside the door resulted in management sending the housekeeper inside the room, just ignoring the sign on the door. It was very disturbing to return to the room and find that someone had entered (and moved our things around to do light housekeeping) without permission. I then had the misfortune to speak to Julian who rudely asked me for "my side of the story" . (But what about the sign on the door?) After too many phone calls his conclusion was that there was some miscommunication from the front desk that resulted in housekeeping breaking into my room. EXASPERATING! So long Marriott Streamside. Hilton offers much better customer service. 9
We have been Marriott Owners for over 15 years and have stayed at multiple properties including Aruba Surf Club, Newport Coast Villas, Grande Ocean in HH, Grande Vista Orlando, Timber Lodge Lake Tahoe, Frenchman's Cove St. Thomas , Ocean Pointe West Palm Beach, Marbella Beach Resort Marbella, Spain and Maui Ocean Club. By far this is the most disappointing vacation resort ever. The pool is tiny both indoor and out. There are no real amenities, no Marketplace, the rooms do not even resemble the pictures on the website. The furniture was worn out and miserable. The carpet was worn and needs replaced. There is no air conditioning, and the villa does not have a washer and dryer. In addition to all that, the location is less than desirable. You have to catch a shuttle to everything because nothing is within walking distance to the resort. Should not be put in the category of resort. There is nothing resort like about this place.
