Pictures make it look like a boutique hotel, but the experience is not to that level. Its proximity to Union Square is the best point. There's a bus stop right in front - convenient if it gets you to your destination. If you're on the BART, it's a 10-15min walk uphill. We didn't have luggage so it wasn't bad, but for heaver loads it may be taxing. There's one elevator, so if you're in the upper floors you'll definitely have to wait or hope it's working. The JR Room is akin to the small rooms in NY - which is fine for touring as we were only there just to sleep. Cleanliness is questionable. Found a pair of socks under the desk along with a used straw. There wasn't a fitted sheet for the mattress, just 2 flat sheets tucked. If they became untucked, you would see a dirty mattress underneath. The ceiling fan was wired backwards, so first position is the fastest setting and last slowest. And it wobbled so much we were scared it was going to fall. The major minus here is the Burritt Room's proximity to the guest rooms. If you're staying on a Friday/Saturday beware of the band entertainment from 7-9 (supposedly). They leave the door open so all the music will escape into the stairwell (which is open to each guest room floor). We were on the third floor so we couldn't sleep until they stopped (around 11-11:30). Afterwards we were kept awake from all the furniture moving back for the next day.

We arrived late afternoon and check-in was very nice and the staff was very welcoming and invited us to their art reception. The new art is aesthetically pleasing and very interesting. The hotel has a very small elevator and requires you to open the outer doors that swing out on the floor. However, we found ourselves taking the stairs often as the elevator was often in use and unavailable. Luckily, we were on the 4th of 8 floors. The hotel, however beautiful and well maintained, is older and centrally heated without air conditioning. It was rather warm on one of the evenings; the ceiling fan and open window helped. I would honestly give 4.5 stars, if I could. This is a very nice hotel, the breakfast is excellent, the staff is welcoming and kind, and I would definitely stay here again.

The hotel staff and we had a quick friendly check in. No problems whatsoever and we had a pleasant clean room to come to at the end of a day of exploring San Francisco.

Lauren at the front desk was very friendly and helpful. We even got upgraded to a beautiful suite because it was our anniversary. Free breakfast buffet had good choices and just the right varieties. I would recommend this hotel for sure!

Nice hotel. Good location for shopping and restaurants.

My husband and I were visiting from NY to attend a wedding in Sebastopol and decided to stay one night in San Francisco before flying back - we are so glad we did! Although it was a short stay, we loved our night at the Mystic Hotel in the Stockton Studio Suite on the fifth floor. The hotel staff was friendly and welcoming, check in was very quick, and they have an arrangement with the parking garage just around the corner for $35/night valet service, which was also fast and very convenient. Our room was stunning and spacious with a comfortable king bed, mini bar and snacks, and roomy bathroom with a rainfall walk-in shower and full-length mirror. Large windows opened all the way, which was convenient for us as there was no A/C and it was unusually hot while we were staying. The ceiling fan helped keep it comfortable in the room. Overall, we really enjoyed ourselves and would definitely stay here again!

The hotel room was very small, and did not have AC. We had to leave the windows open for cool breeze although the street noise was excessive. Do you location is excellent and the price was good, therefore if you don't plan on spending a lot of time in the room it's not that bad.

The hotel has good design, solid bones with a nice revamp. Perfect location just a block and a half from union square. Rooms are big, comfortable, clean and bright. Staff was super friendly and helpful in suggestions for dinner. Opportunities: needs better wifi, and updated sofa.

I was disappointed from the very beginning when I saw that the hotel is right next door to a liquor store (and not a nice one either), in what seemed like a seedy part of Stockton Street; there's nice stuff in the next block, but I was very wary of the location. The next disappointment was the hotel elevator, which was so old, it was one of those 19th Century jobs. The room was adequate, but not very well-lit and instead of curtains, they had these brocade shades that were very hard to move up and down. One of the shades broke and I had to call maintenance to come and fix it. But the most difficult thing was that the cleaning staff, in four nights at the hotel, NEVER cleaned the toilet or the rest of the bathroom. They didn't replace used toiletries, didn't put on fresh sheets or pillowcases (one of which had a hole in it), didn't clean the sink and I got more and more frustrated because I was leaving the room in the morning, while the cleaning staff was working on my floor. Cleaning the toilet is NOT something you should ever ask a cleaning staff to do. It's the first time in a while that I've left a hotel and didn't leave a tip for the housekeeping staff. I recently stayed in a hotel in Wooster, OH (pop. 30,000) that so far exceeds the Mystic in every way possible, it's not funny. I think there's a lot of work to do to get the hotel where it needs to be.

Front desk was not enough kind to advise us in our stay.

Great location. Small and very musty room. Needed desperately to be aired out. But Very nice free breakfast

The hotel is overall a preferable place to stay for a-few-days traveling in San Francisco, as it is close to Chinatown and Union Square and a lot of tourist spots. There are good foods to be found pretty close to it. The complementary breakfast is also satisfying. However, tho only drawback is that the hotel has a bar of its own on the second floor which is so noisy at night if you are staying on the third floor.

The hotel was beautiful, and clean. The wifi was the only thing that was a little slow-but hello! We were on vacation! To disconnect from everything else. It really didn't factor in to how happy we were with the stay. Loved it!

Very happy with our stay at Mystic Hotel! Rooms are small but very well appointed in terms of furnishings and finishes, which makes up for the small size. Just off the main drag of Union Square so that you're convenient but without the noise. Cookies available in the lobby. Would definitely stay there again.

Hotel Mystic--the hotel itself, was fantastic. Delicious food the next morning on the breakfast buffet. The hotel restaurant-bar however, was beyond disappointing. Although the drinks were well-prepared, the staff was uppity/borderline arrogant, and after being seated at a table at ~10 PM, the manager said my wife and I had to leave if we didn't eat. Two $12 cocktails did not rate us a table. She noted something to the effect of: if you choose not to eat, you're welcome to stand in the bar area (which was packed).

Stayed for a week and enjoyed this hotel very much. It had a lot of character and was clean and comfortable. Excellent location in Union Square and across from the cheapest parking garage in the area. Friendly and helpful staff - we would return!

Good location friendly staff. I only stayed one night and they upgraded me to a larger room for free.

Loved the breakfast and service. HAD BED BUGS AND NEEDED TO SEE MY DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY UPON MY RETURN. IT HURT!

Eccentric small hotel not on the most pleasant street, but great staff, excellent comp breakfast, and fair price. If you don't want a feel-good prestige location, this is fine. Watch the price of the garage across the street, though.

The Mystic Hotel by Charlier Palmer was a quaint hotel that was close to all. The staff was professional and the room was clean.
