Bang for the buck is certainly there. A little shopworn, but impeccably clean! The staff is friendly and VERY helpful. If what you're looking for is a nice, clean place to stay, and don't want to break the bank, stop here. If I'm in the area again, I will.
This place is really fantastic for the price. My room was clean, well decorated and not cheaply put together. The staff was super chill and easy going. I had no issues with my booking or reservation. The housekeeping was solid. The free breakfast was tragically underwhelming but at the same time it's a free breakfast and for the price of the room it really doesn't matter. The place is in the process of being fixed up outside. I stayed here for a week and it was nice to see more landscaping progress every day. I highly recommend this place, especially for the price, cleanliness and staff. If I were to offer ideas for improvement I would say a slightly better breakfast and the option to take a bath, not just a shower. But nonetheless I would stay here again without question.
We needed a location convenient to the Ivoryton Playhouse that had a 2 bed room. Pier Blue Inn was available, met our needs, had a reasonable price of $236 total for 2 nights, and continental breakfast was included. The location was perfect: 5 minutes off I-95, and 15 minutes from the Ivoryton Playhouse. The rooms are a bit quirky re decor, however, quite functional with a mini fridge, coffee maker, and microwave. The mattresses and pillows are comfortable; we slept well. Sunday morning’s continental breakfast was a pleasant surprise, given some of the reviews: coffee, tea, bagels, croissants, selection of breads for toast, English muffins, oranges, apples, bananas, 2 cereals, 2 juices, yogurt. HOWEVER, Monday morning was a different story: no yogurt, croissants, oranges, or half and half. No explanation for the difference was provided when we mentioned the “lack of”. We felt the yogurt and fruits made the continental breakfast adequate w/o filling up on breads. Also, they use styrofoam. UGH! We would return, in a pinch, however this would not be our first choice. We plan to return to the Ivoryton Playhouse for a different production in August and plan to explore other convenient lodging.
I stayed here over the 4th of July holiday. I've stayed here a few times before and I think this was the best stay I have had. I had a room on the second floor overlooking the back of the property where there is a grassy lawn, a tent and a grill. On the 4th some people were having a lunchtime cookout and kids were kicking around a soccer ball. It was a nice view. My room was clean, renovated, had a phone in the room, clean towels, nice soap and even a mini microwave (which I did not ask for but was much appreciated). For those who are vertically challenged like myself, climbing into bed is difficult because the beds are high. I used a chair to kneel on and then climbed onto the bed. The air conditioner unit was quiet the first night and kept me cold- too cold and I like to be cold! I turned it up and switched beds. The second night the unit made more noise but no more than the window air conditioner at home. I didn't notice any outside noise this time. The wi-fi worked well. I was able to use my cell phone and my laptop. This man checking guests in on the night of July 3 was very pleasant and provided me with complimentary bottle of water and directions to my room. The woman who checked guests out on the 5th was also very courteous and asked how my stay was. This property is right on a main road and across the street is a nice diner cafe and an adorable bookshop. There's no crosswalk but at 12:30 in the afternoon there were few cars on the road.
We were in Old Saybrook for a wedding and looking for overnight lodging at a reasonable cost. At $169 a night this was the worst place we have stayed in 40 years. Dirty, smelly, decor out of the local free house dump, no phone in room (when I complained I was told the phones are so old people steal them as antiques), linens and towels so shabby we didn't even take a shower. Free continental breakfast was disgusting.
This is the worst hotel we have ever stayed in. Fortunately, it was only for one night. We will not stay in an independent hotel again without checking it out. Free breakfast was marginal and used all prepared foods.
The location of the property IS perfect. (I want to note that it is right by the local high school and that mornings on school days could have an issue) it is a less then 10 minute drive to beach, downtown and food! A previous reviewer nailed it about the "odd mix". At first glance it is a cute room and fairly clean. On 2nd glance the ceiling in the bathroom was coming down, and there was no covering on the light in the bathroom and the toilet you had to flush several times the actually flush. Beds were clean and comfy but the shades to the room didn't keep out the light from out front, causing blarring light while trying to sleep. Above us the people were so loud and I think fell out of the bed at some point. Check in took a little long because they ask for a copy of you credit card as well as you license. Check out was super fast. We did not eat breakfast there but there was a tiny area in the office to eat. It is NOT near a pier, or off of the water. We would maybe stay again if the price was right.
LOVED our stay here, when we checked in the dude on the desk had us in hysterics, funny, friendly guy, Loved the quirky room, which was very clean and well stocked (A microwave would have been amazing). Best bit about this place is that it's across the street from the best breakfast place ever.
This was our 7th stay at Pier Blue. Their staff is always kind, attentive, friendly, and very helpful. We stayed in a different room this time as our usual room was occupied. I asked to see the room with 3 full beds and we decided to accept it as it was light and bright and roomy. This room hasn't been updated yet, but the staff immediately took care of the few things that were missing. The room was very comfortable and had a nice square table which was perfect for the 3 of us to have take out dinner on. I have to say it again, their shower heads are the best in the world. Also, the staff will gladly show you the room first before checking in to make sure it meets your needs. We will be back!
We were on a road trip through New England and planned to take the Essex Steam Train & Riverboat so needed a place close by to stay the night before. We booked rather late so the choices were limited that weren't really over our decided budget. So, we chose the Pier Blue in Old Saybrook as it is only a 10-minute drive away. First impressions were that this property was in transition with updating still in some level of progress. But, it's an odd mix with no real direction. And, I'm still confused on where the "pier" is, blue or otherwise. The room was fairly clean (the desk chair was really in need of serious cleaning) and it was furnished with a hodgepodge of items and decor. Every room seems to have a different set of random stuff. The room felt dark and dingy but I guess for what we paid it was suitable. The staff were VERY friendly, almost too much so. But, they genuinely seemed interested in making sure our visit was pleasant and we had everything we needed. It appears to be a family-owned property who also own the nearby Indian restaurant. Check-in was quick and easy and parking is ample to park near the room in typical motel fashion. The breakfast area is small with just a few tables and chairs and the selection is fairly limited. But, it served our needs OK to get the day started. The location is quite good for nearby attractions, restaurants and shops, and off of the main highway in the area. It was a quiet area and we had no noise issues as the motel is set fairly far back off the street.
