We lucked out when we found this place on line. Not having been to Oaxaca city before, we didn't know quite what to expect but knew we definitely did not want the "resort" life anymore. The location was perfect for walking to any part of town and we were right in the heart of the market. With a free breakfast of eggs, juice and coffee (excellent coffee) in the mornings, we had a great start to every day. The rooms were exquisite with beautiful artwork and very, very clean. The only complaint I would have is that the pillows were a little too stuffed and were difficult to sleep on. The staff were super wonderful and saw to our every need. We spent a full day wandering around comparing our hotel to others and all in all, I'd rather stay at Casa Garay. Will definitely stay here next year if I'm lucky enough to see Oaxaca again.

Had high hopes... Hotel staff met us at the airport as scheduled, and they were wonderful. Location is great, a couple of blocks from the Zocalo. The staff could not have been nicer, though if you are not fluent in Spanish, good luck... The room... The hardest mattress I’ve ever experienced. The shower, just about the lowest pressure I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been in some pretty remote locales... We’ll pass on the non-functioning toilet that took a night and a half to fix. Five breakfasts... Never once did reality align with the menu description. Again, the staff are so darn nice, I hate to submit this review, but alas, I must. The price-point and the product-at-hand are clearly not in synch.

I ended up being stranded in Oaxaca during the day of the dead week and luckily this Hotel had an available room. This is a very unique and family-run space in the middle of the historic and bustling Oaxaca downtown. The staff were very accommodating and responsive. It wasn't particularly cheap, but as a last-minute (even desperate!) booking during a very busy time I was more than satisfied overall.

This is a beautiful hotel in a great location—a stone’s throw from the November 20th Market which is a great place for food. It is also walking distance from the Zocalo and every Oaxaca site. It is bustling during the day, but gets very quiet at night, things shut down pretty early. Breakfast was included and was not bad; nice to have before a booked tour. The rooms themselves are very nice, good soundproofing. The staff is also very nice, but very few people speak English—communication was very hard. Oscar and Alfons (waiter) were our go to if we needed anything. They did provide airport pick up and drop off outside their scheduled times for free, which we really appreciated.

This is truly a beautiful hotel with very good food - breakfast, lunch and dinner. But when a place tries to do everything well, many things go wrong. First, we were not met at the airport as promised. Secondly, the front desk had no record of our reservation which we had made over the phone after we had to cancel our Expedia reservation the month before due to the Sep 19 earthquake. Third, though we were promised the same rates over the phone as our Sep Expedia reservation, the hotel receptionist, Ita, informed us we had to pay over triple the price due to the holiday weekend. I refused to be turned out into the street with no reservation elsewhere which Ita was willing for us to do. I persisted in getting the front desk which now included Oscar to take responsibility for their errors. After 30 mins and much conferring, Oscar informed us we could stay for our original rate but we would have to change rooms once. We volunteered to forfeit the "included" breakfast and were given one free dinner. The first night, there was a band with drummer on the other side of our wall until 12:30 pm. They moved us the next day. Then they moved us two days after that to the very back of the hotel where I highly suggest staying if you choose this hotel. Then, at the end of our stay, Oscar who had promised us a ride to the airport had been replaced by hard-nosed Ita, who called us a taxi and informed us we must pay for the ride. We went away not as happy guests but as 2nd class guests that they obviously don't care if they ever see again. In summary, this hotel, while stunning, actually has several conflicts due to hosting lots of meetings, birthday dinners and chocolate tastings (all while we were there) while having no private place to hold these events. Guests are simply supposed to suffer up. What I liked was Oscar, who did his best despite all odds, the chef and the location right in the middle of two mercados and 2 blocks from the zocolo. We were very glad to get back to Queretaro, Mexico to soft hi-count cotton sheets and the order, beauty and culture that this World Heritage Site provides. We fail to understand the draw of foreigners to Oaxaca when Queretaro has a much nicer historic center, as much or more culture and nearby San Miguel de Allende for shopping.

Súper cálidos atentos y siempre predispuestos a ayudar.
