Asilomar Conference Grounds

Location is wonderful, and the grounds and buildings are gorgeous. There's a sense of peace at Asilomar, with the ocean right beside you, and the beautiful cypresses overhead. Everyone staying there always seems friendly and interesting, and the staff is lovely. Be aware the rooms are NOT luxury hotel rooms. They're more like a cross between hotel rooms and bunks at a summer camp. And it's meant to be that way. No TVs, no landline phones (though the free Wifi is good!!). There's a sense of simplicity and minimalism and calm that's good for the spirit. And some rooms, like the small doubles on the north end of the grounds, have amazing, windswept ocean views. The large common spaces are really lovely. Go hang out by the fireside or play pool or listen to a guest play the piano. Walk along the beach. And the breakfast in the big common room is tasty, plentiful, and rather elegant, and you can have fun conversations at the big round tables with guests from all around the world. Plus it's a quick drive from Asilomar to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Cannery Row, or whale watching cruises. Great place to come for a conference or for a vacation with extended family...they have rooms and smaller buildings that will accommodate quite a crew. I always feel better about life after spending some time at Asilomar.

Loved it the deer in the morning were a treat.. right outside the room,.

Needs major renovation. Old and ravaged buildings and rooms.

The hotel located very close to the ocean and a lot of beautiful places for walking around.

High school dorm style. Dark and dated room with air conditioning likely from 50s. Close to the beach. Location is probably the only nice thing.

Our 2 nights away from modern life and simple feel was good. It was a simple, not much ammendities in the room kind of weekend. We come from a big city hustle feel so this was quite interesting and humble. The grounds are so pretty with deer roaming around everywhere. The staff was super sweet and even tried to help me air up my road bike tires (no success but they tried). A serious short and pleasant walk to the beach. I would again stay there with family or friends in a big suite closer to the water.

Everything was perfect but the beds were unfomfortable. But i will definitely be returning:)

Central location on Monterey peninsula provides rustic lodge like feel with no frill rooms. Our king room in the newer section was quite spacious. I found the staff to be very friendly and caring. Grounds have a calm feel devoid of all commercial trappings. May not suite those used to the cookie cutter hotel chains with all the frills.

Asilomar Conference Grounds is unique. First the grounds are really a state park with walking access to the beach. The buildings are architectural jewels with the original buildings built between 1913-1928. The buildings were designed by famed architect Julia Morgan. With this in mind, realize that Asilomar cannot be compared to a 5 star hotel with a golf course. Asilomar is a beautiful setting that allows the guests to interact with the natural environment. There are no televisions or phones in the rooms-we think that is a plus in this environment, others may find that disappointing. Free internet is available in the rooms. Most of the guests at Asilomar are attending conferences and most of the amenities are directed towards large group events. We attended a wedding on the grounds and stayed extra nights to enjoy the setting. We rented bikes, available on site, and had a marvelous time riding along Sunset Drive and Ocean View Drive. Asilomar has a restaurant on site (Crocker Hall) which has good catered food, but I recommend getting breakfast elsewhere if you are not attending a conference. There are numerous good restaurants just minutes away. There are walking tours available on site, and it is easy to find beautiful places to sit and simply enjoy the scenery. The room furnishings for the standard rooms are generally plain, but clean and functional-that rates Asilomar only 3 stars, but the setting could not be more beautiful-5 stars!

This place is so well located, and so relaxing. Deer are feeding on the grounds, and there is a wonderful board walk through the dunes. And the Pacific Ocean is a five minute walk where one can enjoy observing birds, dogs, and surfers. Free billiards and a wood fire in a lobby so pleasing to the eye and so woodsy in feel that you'd think you were in a Yosemite lodge. This is definitely a place where you want to hang around and let those cares melt away.

There's great value to be had at this peaceful Oceanside retreat. But beware of the accommodations stuck in the 80's including the bathrooms, bedding and overall decor. Its proximity to the beach, being in between Monterey and Carmel just off the end of the 17 mile drive, and general peacefulness are its main redeeming qualities. If you need a TV to be entertained, you're out of luck. Bring a book!

Not fancy. Staight forward. Clean.......and down right refreshing,] re other venues. Can't want TV and fancy amenities. No problema!!!!!!

Everything around Asilomar is amazing...unfortunately the room itself is totally unpleasant. Carpet needs reduing...wall papers were peeling off..I'm better off spending money on a motel 6 and save 100+ then spending 200 bucks on a room that doesn't beat motel 6... Other than that...the location was AWESOME!! Would totally go back and visit...just won't be reserving a room from there no more until it gets renovated.

Minimalist amenities but overall a good place to stay, especially if you are planning local activities and not spending a whole lot of time in the room. The beds are comfortable and grounds were very nice.

Pleasant and helpful staff. Beautiful location 5 minutes from Asilomar Beach.

My girlfriend and I stayed for 2 nights to do some hiking in the surrounding areas. We found out right away how odd the "bedding may vary" option is.. We were given a room with a queen and 3 singles. It was also an inconvenience for us to not have an in-room fridge. Regardless of the bedding and lack of fridge, microwave, and coffee maker the location is heaven. It's super quiet. We had baby deer strolling around our building, and the private pathway to the Asilomar State Beach is perfection. It was different not having a tv, but we loved it. Overall this is a great place to relax.

Wonderful lots of wildlife good sticky buns big room relaxing environment

perfect location, but rooms need a lot of improvement, we couldn't have a normal shower or even brush teeth because of faucets not properly working in the bathroom also you can hear your neighbors basically everything

5 minutes after checking in, we saw 2 deer just 20 feet away. Kids had a wonderful time at the beach and we our bikes from here to the Aquarium.

Good location but it is the first time I have stayed in a hotel were I had no phone or tv in my room. There also was not enough of parking. We had to park 10 minutes away from our room . The accomaftions are spread out over the 100 acres of the resort. I had to go outside our complex to use the phone attached to the building to ask where the ice machine was. I was then told that the closest ice machine to my location was the next building over.
