Having stayed at the Hotel Saratoga in February, we were initially pleased with our choice of hotel, we had a good welcome, the breakfast was good and overall the cleanliness of the property was fine. Unfortunately that is where the story ends. The hotel had a fire while we were there and whilst we appreciate these things can happen we were truly appalled by the lack of fire safety procedures which were not in place, putting guests and their staff at risk. Facts are detailed as: 1- The fire alarms failed to go off. The purpose of a fire alarm system is to warn all guests and staff of potential danger. The fire alarms did not work! 2- We were alerted to the fire by someone banging on the bedroom door, shouting. When we opened the door this person had gone, we do not know if it was another guest or a member of staff who banged on the door. On the assumption it was a staff member, this person had been put at risk by the management of the hotel by being told to knock on everyone’s bedroom door. 3- We were on the 4th floor and the corridor was full of smoke when we opened the bedroom door. Obviously we were very concerned by this and made haste to evacuate. 4- Fortunately our experience in hotels ensured we knew the location of the fire exits. We found our way down a smoke filled corridor to the fire exit, which was also full of smoke. Given the choice to stay or evacuate we chose to carry on to try and get out of the hotel. Thankfully for us there was a small amount of daylight on the fire escape, otherwise we would not have been able to find our way down the stairs as there were no additional lights. By this time there was a plume of acrid smoke and we were very concerned for our safety. 5- During this time we had not seen any members of staff and the fire alarm had still not sounded. Thankfully we arrived at the mezzanine level and we had to leave the fire escape as we could not go any further, we believed we were walking into the source of the fire, which, as it turns out we were. By this time our lungs were full of the acrid smoke and we were very scared and suffering ill effects of the smoke. 6- Arriving at Reception we were left to fend for ourselves without any initial attention or care for our welfare. When we subsequently raised these issues with the Hotel Management their response was to tell us that there had been a planned fire evacuation in January and this was successful (their words) however, this was clearly not the case in February otherwise we would not have been in this frightening situation. The planned evacuation in January obviously did not challenge the full evacuation plan otherwise why did the alarms fail, why were fire break glass points hanging off the wall (see picture attached)? Naturally we were found alternate accommodation following the fire however, the hotel was open again the following day. We would be very surprised if full remedial works to the fire safety system had been carried out in that short space of time, not to mention the smell of smoke throughout the building. I have attached a picture taken of one of the “fire safety” points which clearly does not reflect the safety standards the management maintain are in place. This review has been written to alert all other travellers to beware of the fire safety arrangements in the Hotel Saratoga. We were offered a complimentary weekend for our discomfort, only after complaining, however, being based in the UK it was not a viable option, even if we had wanted to risk our safety again. The hotel management, as stated by a previous Trip Advisor reviewer, takes great pains to point out when they are correct and the customer is wrong, which is not how the world of hospitality works! Recommend you check out the safety arrangements before you book the Hotel Saratoga.
We selected this hotel for its location. It’s in the process of being refurbished I believe. The main dissatisfaction & disappointment are the beds. They are so uncomfortable & the pillows are Terrible. So we didn’t sleep at all. I mentioned this to the receptionist & they put a topper on the bed & changed the pillows. But Sadly it made no difference. Such a shame as we went home feeling very tired. What a shame. Change the bed & pillows. It’s a great location
As a world traveller we have stayed in many hotels. We chose this one as location wise it was close to the action and it did not disappoint. Hotel wise it had good amenities, including free safe and WiFi. It also had a great view from the roof, day and night. The staff were helpful and welcoming. The rooms were modern but in need of sound proofing. We could hear either side and above. With ‘do not disturb’ on the door, the maids woke us daily earlier than we wanted with banging trollies outside our room which we did not appreciate. They also had very noisy shoes. Although nobody will want to lie in at this hotel as the beds/pillows are so hard you feel achy not rested. We were disappointed to find no tea/ coffee facilities, no close up mirror for make-up etc, no English TV channels or an iron/ing board in the room, which is surprising for a 4 star hotel. But the biggest surprise was being woken by drilling and banging, which went on for hours. No very restful. They are renovating the hotel which we were not aware of at time of booking or when checking in. We would have avoided this hotel had we known. Not acceptable. We would not return.
The hotel is a perfect, central location for Palma. On entry it is bright, modern and very clean and this is the theme throughout. The staff are welcoming and always ready to help. The rooms are functional with free safes and wifi, that's fast. There are no hot drinks machines in the room, we took our own kettle and tea. There is a fridge, where you pay for drinks. The bed and pillows are very hard. The hotel advised that all the beds are like this. We have a Jensen bed at home with a topper and are therefore used to more accommodating and a more comfortable bed and softer pillows. Housekeeping fitted a thin duvet under the sheet, but it had little effect. As a consequence we did not sleep that well and felt stiff. The hotel, we feel should invest in some comfortable bed toppers as many discerning guests used to high end beds will not find the hard beds comfortable. We could not come back to this hotel due to the beds, even though in all other regards it fits the bill. It should be noted that the hotel was quiet at night even though it is in the centre. Breakfast is the usual fare for hotels. Eggs cooked by the chef were very nice. The hot food, however, was only warm and when placed on a cold plate became cold very quickly. The hotel should look to provide hot plates and improve the heat retention in the cooked food. The hotel had a small gym with one cross trainer, one recumbent bike, one treadmill, two spinning bikes and weights machines. water is available in the gym. If it had a rowing machine it would be ideal. The gym is supposed to open at 8am, but I got in a bit earlier. Given that many people who train are early risers the morning opening time should be much earlier. If you can sleep on hard beds the hotel is perfect. Those who desire more comfortable beds need to look elsewhere. Better beds and hotter breakfast food would have resulted in 5 star rating.
Wouldnt have booked if had first read reviews...i never learn..Stayed one night, arrived at 00.00 and had to check out at 12.00, late check out was refused. For the money I had paid 138 EUR I could have gotten a much better room at a real 4 star hotel, I'm sure. The gentleman at reception was kind and nice. They let you use hotel premises after check our such as pool and gym. They store your luggage. That is a plus. My king size bed was so short, my legs were hanging off. Pillows are hard, sheets are rough cotton. I was really looking forward to some soft pillows and satin sheets like in hotels of this ranking typically found. The bath is very small and outdated. There was a long black hair in my bath...really?) The hairdryer is probably from the 80s if not older. Bring your own if you don't want to burn your hair. Tv didn't work. I'm pretty sure it was because of the remote..this is a tiny thing they could check regularly... The pool is outside and it is too cold to swim. I didn't wind a mention anywhere about it being an outside pool. Gym is advertised to be on the top floor with a nice view, instead it is on the ground floor. My room was facing the inner street so at least i could sleep, but was taken up by kids screaming and running through the hall. I thought I was dreaming. I understand this is not hotels fault but there is no sound isolation what so ever. It was called a superior room but if you ask me it was a standard with a long size bed. Disappointed. Wouldn't recommend. Not a 1 star review only thanks to the friendly staff, and probably that only because I didn't complain.
Do not, at any circumstances, book this hotel. There are, I am certain, many other 4-star, hotels in Palma where they take better care of their guests. At Hotel Saratoga they are intrested in your money and, if you do dare to complain, to prove they are in the right. The management and staff are rude and arrogant. The small things, like sloppy cleaning, the wrong information given concerning Breakfast serving times, keycards which had to be recharged, we could have overseen (even though you might expect more from a hotel of this standard). It was the reception, or the lack of such, which truly upset us. At our arrival to the hotel it became apparent that there was something wrong with the booking and 7 people were booked in to share 6 beds. What followed was a farce... The time the hotel spent proving it was all our fault was truly impressive. We ended up having to pay more and being told this was all our fault. If the hotel responds to this, be certain their response will explain, in detail, how we were wrong. Somebody should be kind enough to tell the manager this is no way to treat your guests.
Nice modern hotel well located near the old town, short walk to the cathedral. room was excellent with balcony. The airport bus stops about 100 yds away only 8 euros return. we went to the in house Thursday jazz night which was only ok in my opinion, sort of a luvies night, open mike style with lots of self congratulation going on. . The meal was also disappointing.Go for a meat fest at restaurant Ca'n Toni out of the hotel 200yds to the left, that was excellent. Overall a good experience would definitely return to the Saratoga
The Saratoga gave us a great solution for accomodation and comfort. Well located in central Palma, walking distance from the old town and with all the facilities, our stay was happy and relaxed. I highly recommend this place for people who wants a big hotel in the center and for a good price. Breakfast is ok according to standards. Reception has been renovated recently according to the staff. Great atmosphere.
Standard hotel with, except a couple workers, low profile crew. Not worth it price for what you get. Rooms even called superior where really standard. Noisy and no knowledge on customer service. Probably, the only thing that was ok was the Jazz Bar.
Small clean rooms that can be quite noisy due to heavy traffic during nights. Breakfast needs to improve. Great location in the center of Palma de Mallorca. An extra ? to the friendly staff that really improves the overall grade.
