I booked a room with three beds for me, my son and my brother in law. When I checked in, they said I had a room with three beds but when I got to the room, it only had two beds. As we had had a busy day and were about to go out for the evening we just rested in the room and I decided to tell the front desk about the problem on my way out so that they could remedy it while we were out. When I got to the front desk, they asked how long we had been in the room, and I said about an hour and they said well if you don’t tell us in the first five minutes you are stuck with the room. I was so incredulous at this attitude that all I could say was “you’ve got to be kidding” but they stuck to their guns. No apology, no attempt to make the problem go away, just a brick wall of attitude. I suppose running a hotel in Edinburgh makes it too difficult to actually give your customers the hospitality and service they are paying for. I also noticed a sign that said swearing at or otherwise abusing employees will not be tolerated. I have never seen such a sign in a hotel. I guess this hotel must need that sign because if that’s the way they treat their guests, they must have frequent episodes of such abuse. I was half expecting Basil Faulty to come out of the office. Ridiculous hotel.

Good failure for money. The breakfast in the morning was affordable and good value. All in all we would probably stay there again.

hear me out

I booked this hotel for 3 nights without reading the reviews, since it looked nice enough in the pictures and was very cheap compared to others in the area. I then read the reviews and they actually stressed me out so much that I tried to cancel my booking. turns out britannia hotels don’t refund cancellations, so I gingerly prepared to bring my boyfriend to the ‘worst hotel in edinburgh’. and guess what, it was fine! upon rereading the 1-star reviews, it is apparent that some people are unfamiliar with the concept of a budget hotel in general. no, they will not carry your bags to the room for you or provide room service, because this is not gleneagles. there are scuff marks on the walls and the lift has seen better days - both of which are different to actual dirt, and won’t harm you. if you’d feel personally offended that the staff didn’t paint over a scratch on the skirting board especially for you, maybe book a different hotel. we have stayed in the much higher rated easyhotel (another budget hotel with a windowless option) and agreed that the britannia was much nicer. the bathroom was very clean and spacious, with a hot shower and toiletries. the bed was firm but not uncomfortable. location was great, next to a pretty river and about a 20 minute walk to the city (passing cafes and nice views). can’t speak for the food as we ate elsewhere, but there is a bar open until 1am. honestly if you just need somewhere to sleep after being out all day, can’t really fault this

First room did not have double bed which we specified. No bother we were given a different room with double bed. Much better room with a nice view as well. Staff accommodating and friendly. Did not use WiFi or dining room as we wanted to look around Edinburgh in the two days we had. Great location and will be booking again when we get the chance. Loads to see!

Hotel could do with bejng updates, very tired rooms, one pillow, poor shower, mould on the bath taps. The breakfast was very poor, pancakes were hard, hash browns were broken in pieces. It just was not value for money. The reception staff who checked us in was the only real positive, they allowed us to movw rooms without fuss.

The property was clean, but it needs a bit of an uplift: some doors won't close properly, etc. It was a good stay in general, but the bar was mostly empty with what looked like no barman at the bar. The location was not bad, however prepare for a nice 10-15 min. walk to the area where you coud have a lunch or dinner.

Wish I had slept in my car

Disgusting hotel. Service fine enough. Conditions are actually so horrendous it is insulting to any traveller. There are midges (biting insect for those who don’t know) INSIDE the building, swarming under the light in the hallway. But don’t worry … they are ALSO in your room. I slept over the sheets, my girlfriend slept under… both of us trying to avoid bugs if you know what I mean. Public hair in the bathtub. The bathroom smells of human feces (yes, it really does). I didn’t dare eat there. This place is nasty. No one should book it. The building is old and should be properly cared for and shown some respect. So should the guests. Just a complete joke- the value of this hotel is horrible. It is BY FAR the worst hotel I have stayed in in my life. Motel 6 in USA is actually finer in many ways. HAHA. LISTEN TO THE REVIEWS AND ALWAYS CHECK THE REVIEWS.

Essentially paid £100’s for storing luggage

Arrived at 1300 to check in earlier, was refused and told to come in after 1500, which I told them that I was unable to until extremely late. He assured me I could do that so I left for the event, I asked if I can leave my luggage in the meantime, he agreeed. I arrived after the event to find out my booking was cancelled and was refused a room unless I pay again.
