Nigeria is the beating heart of the African content, with a higher population than any other African country and a booming economy based on oil production. Tourists taking flights to Nigeria tend to concentrate on the bustling capital city of Lagos, but in wider Nigeria you can find rainforests, mountain resorts and national parks where endangered species such as elephants roam safe and free. Cheap flights to Nigeria from US open up a world of possibilities, from reveling in the luxury of a private beach resort in Lagos to soaking up the spectacular views from the heart of the Obudu mountains.
The climate in Nigeria varies from region to region – a tropical central stretch bordered by equatorial lands to the south and an arid area to the north. In general terms it is hot all year round with little seasonal variation. The dry season, from November to March, can see temperatures reaching 100F, and the accompanying dusty winds may encourage many visitors to book their ticket to Nigeria between April and October. Alternatively, you may wish to travel to enjoy an event such as the Lagos Jazz Series or the Festac Food Fair.
The key to finding cheap flights to Nigeria is being as flexible as possible on your itinerary and booking via the Orbitz search tool. By clicking on ‘Nearby airports’ you can pull up a list of alternative cities to fly out of or into, enabling you to choose the best and most convenient deal. Similarly, ‘Show flexible dates’ offers a range of dates and a selection of direct and indirect flights. By combining both you can choose the flights to Nigeria that perfectly combine convenience with value.
Murtala Muhammed International Airport is the primary international airport of Nigeria. It is located a mile and a half from the center of Lagos, and handles more than 7 million passengers per year. Visitors from Amsterdam may notice that the airport is modeled after the award-winning Schiphol airport, and since 2013 the facilities have been upgraded and revamped. If you’re staying in one of the larger hotels, then a shuttle will probably be there to transport you from the airport to your accommodation. Otherwise the safest way to get to the city is using a taxi.
The airport which serves the capital city of Abuja is Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport. It handles almost 4.5 million passengers per year and, as with Murtala Muhammed International Airport, it offers the chance to take a connecting flight to many cities around Nigeria. Abuja itself is 12 miles distant, and visitors can make the trip, which takes around 35 minutes, by taxi or bus. Taxis are more expensive, but undoubtedly more reliable and safer.
There are very few airlines flying direct to Nigeria from the US, with the exception of the following:
Other major airlines which do fly direct to Nigeria include:
One of the safest ways to explore the country of Nigeria is by plane. Arik, Aero Contractors and Med-View Airline all offer domestic flights, although you’ll have to take a taxi from the international arrival lounge at Murtala Muhammed International to the domestic departure lounge. Driving a hire car on the roads of cities such as Lagos and Abuja is not recommended, due to the condition of the roads and the sheer weight of traffic, though it is possible to hire a car with a local driver. For trips within cities, taxis and buses are available.
Lagos
Not the place to visit if you’re looking for peace and quiet, Lagos is the commercial hub of Nigeria, with a rapidly growing population which best estimates put at around the 20 million mark. That means it’s packed and noisy, but is also home to a vibrant arts and music scene, markets where you’ll be expected to haggle and restaurants serving delicious local cuisine. If the noise and excitement gets too much, opt to watch the Atlantic Ocean roll in on Bar Beach, Eleko Beach or Lekki Beach.
Abuja
Abuja is the capital of Nigeria, and was mainly constructed during the 1980s, focusing around the 1,312ft edifice of Aso Rock. It boasts more modern infrastructure than much of the country, combined with a selection of wide open spaces and green parks which reflect the beauty of the surrounding landscape.
Oshogbo
A small city in Osun State, Oshogbo is worth visiting to see the stunning Osun Sacred Grove, a forest along the banks of the river Oshun which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Travellers from the US need a passport valid for six months and a visa to enter Nigeria.
It is advisable to check with an official government source before travelling to Nigeria, as governments periodically advise against travel on the grounds of a perceived terrorist threat in specific regions.
