Issue at check in

We have stayed at this hotel many times and always highly recommend it. Our visit this time was spoiled slightly by our check in experience at the hotel. For background, I booked this at short notice (2/3 days beforehand). Confirmation from Hotels.com stated check in time as 4.30pm. I completed the online check in form (from Novotel itself) the day before our stay, as requested. This asked for your estimated time of arrival as you can arrive before your stated check in time (to leave luggage/ use the car park etc). The form stated rooms would be ready from 3.00pm. I confirmed our arrival time as between noon and 3.00pm. We arrived around 2.00pm and were told at reception that our room would not be available for 3.00pm but it would be ready no later than 3.30pm. We were ok with this. We went for a walk into York and returned to the hotel at 3.50pm. On arrival we were told we could not check in until 4.30pm as we were not Accor members and the 3.00pm check in is only available to such members (we are members but hadn't use the app for this booking). I acknowledged this but stated we had been told twice (once on the online form and once at reception) we could get in before 4.30pm. The receptionist did try to find us a room and gave us keys for a room on the first floor. We were grateful for this and made our way to the room. On entering, we discovered it was already occupied! Eventually, everything was sorted out but not a great start to our break. Otherwise, all ok.

Disappointing stay.

Unfortunately for my 4th stay at the hotel I'm down rating my scores. The bed was rock solid and very uncomfortable, the room was next to the lift and stair well so got the noise from that through the night. Although we were there for 3 nights the room was only serviced once. Not the best stay and I'm very disappointed because i have raved about this hotel to friends and family

Very pleasant two night stay

Lovely couple of days spent in York. Hotel in a good location with secure parking & only 10 - 15 minutes walk into the town centre. We only had breakfast in the hotel but it was very nice buffet style with plenty of choice continental & cooked. Staff where helpful and attentive and the hotel had very nice open plan décor. The pool area was very clean. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

There is a lot of sweet paste in the refrigerator, the carpet feels very dirty, the shower towel is very old, there is no trash can or hand washing in the toilet. The room should be renovated. It is not worth paying more than 200 pounds. There are very few types of breakfast food.

Novotel used to be our first choice hotel in York., Sadly over the years the rates became increasingly none competitive and the room designs following a rebrand were a disaster. It would appear that a 20yr old student of design who has never stayed in a hotel was given the job! Not even a coat hook in the room! Having been given a "disabled access" room I went to reception. Not wanting to take a room that was then not available to someone with a disability as we did not need a room of that specification. Reception said it wasn't an issue unless we wanted to move, so we kept the room. The irony.... the room design was equipped with a very large batch
