I Don’t Hand Out 1-Stars Lightly but This One Earned It
I want to be fair: our host ultimately refunded half, which was sufficient but the stay itself was messy.We arrived 30 minutes after check-in and still had to wait 1.5 hours while the host finished cleaning (beds, bathrooms, laundry). She explained a late doctor’s appointment delayed her, which I empathize with, but there was no text warning. We could have gone to dinner instead of waiting awkwardly.The dishwasher was broken, fine, but the sink had old mildewy sponges, dishes had food residue, and the mocha pot was filthy. When used, it malfunctioned and spewed coffee tasted burnt. The fridge was full of her food and dirty even after she cleared it. My cousin, with hospitality experience, said she’d have been fired for leaving it in that state. A toilet was still dirty until flushed.We booked three bedrooms, yet the host asked if we still wanted the third, a surprise since we paid for 3. A broken window screen was at least disclosed. The next day, after asking for a deeper clean, the host sent help hours later than promised. We were again left choosing between waiting awkwardly or canceling the cleaner.I booked two weeks in advance; cleaning last-minute and leaving us to accommodate her schedule felt unprofessional. Other rentals outsource cleaning and leave fresh sponges. The house being old and rural wasn’t the issue, it was the poor planning. While the refund softened it, this turned what should’ve been a dreamy end in Spain, into the worst part of the trip.
