The staff were lovely, absolutely wonderful; the location, unsurpassable. In terms of the amenities, however, this was four-star in name only. The gym was a perfunctory affair, with enough space for no more than two people to work out at once, and the swimming pool was diminuitive. In the bathroom, there was shower gel in lieu of antibacterial handwash (I had to buy my own), and shampoo was not provided - even the toilet paper was of the lowest quality. There were no tea or coffee-making facilities in the room, which are to be expected at a hotel of this grade. The "minibar" had only full-sugar cokes and still waters, no snacks and no alcohol. The breakfast had no whole or unprocessed meats and the coffee was very basic. Based on the facilities versus the price, I could not recommend the Arena Ipanema, despite the great service.

This hotel has 3 things going for it: excellent customer service all around, location (beautiful beach behind the hotel accessible from a park next to the hotel), and good breakfast buffet of local dishes, fresh fruits, good coffee, and a wide assortment of bake goods. On the negative side, the rooms are clean, but tiny and and not much room to even open suitcases or walk around. Don't plan on using the room for anything other than sleeping and showering. Don't expect any extras like wash cloths or hair conditioners. Given the location and the price, I would stay here again.
