This was our first stop of our trip and Portsmouth is such a cute little New England town. Hotel Thaxer was a perfect palce to stay. Right near downtown and very walkable to local shops, resturants, and emtertainment. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The room was updated and very comfortable. Highly recommend.

Super clean and comfortable room. A little tight by US standards, but more than compensated by quality and comfort of bedding and linens. Bathroom was immaculate and featured a lovely heated floor. The staff was authentically attentive and friendly. The onsite restaurant, Nichinan, had superb cocktails; you’ll need to peruse other reviews for clues about the food. The location is excellent- just a few steps away from the super-cute, bustling and varied commercial and entertainment options of downtown Portsmouth. Cheap public parking garages are just a few blocks away, but we recommend the valet parking service, which is worth the premium to avoid trundling suitcases through the busy downtown sidewalks. We will definitely choose the Thaxter again the next time we visit.

I can’t comment on the staff because their check-in just requires you to use your phone number to access the building and your room but the hotel was excellent. The rooms have no outside noise so if you’re a light sleeper, it’s the perfect spot. I got into Portsmouth long before my check-in time so I parked in a nearby garage which ended up costing the same amount that the hotel charges ($40/nt). You’re a block away from all the shops and restaurants and a short walk to Badger’s Island in Maine where you can get drinks and/or a bite to eat and a short walk to the town hall where they had a nice little farmers market Saturday morning

Enjoyable stay at Hotel Thaxter

Very nice boutique type hotel. Great location. Walked right into town from there. Loved the lobby and free coffee & snacks offered. Room was comfortable with beautiful bathroom. I would suggest they install a grab bar in each shower because it can be slippery and there is absolutely nothing to hold on to. Someone could easily hurt themselves. I also thought it strange that no staff were on premises after 8pm. We were advised we needed to be back to hotel by then to have our car parked so that might be an issue for some guests

The bathroom should have had a toilet scrubber!! For "sticky poop," I the guest had to reach into the toilet bowl bare-hsnded to clean it! Then, of course, I washed my hands in the nearby sink. But, really! I was a guest and a handy scrubber would have eliminated that sort of chore.

We loved our stay! From the staff to the decor, we were impressed with Hotel Thaxter. It is so charming and a wonderful alternative to a more commercial hotel. It felt like we were staying in someone’s home, without paying the fees of a vacation rental.

Poor Sleep, Downgraded Room, Disappointing!!!

We arrived at the Thaxster Hotel at 1 AM. Check-in was easy, and communication before arrival was good. Unfortunately, once in the room, we noticed a loud noise, which I initially thought was the air conditioning. After turning it off, I realised it was coming from outside, likely a kitchen extractor or similar unit running nonstop. I reported it to reception the next morning and was told the issue would be resolved. Later that day, they said it had been fixed, but when we returned, they admitted it hadn't and that the noise would continue through our stay. Earplugs were offered (which I used on the second night after poor sleep the first). We were promised a room change for night three. We were moved, but to a downgraded room without the amenities we paid extra for, no kitchen area, robes, or coffee machine. I asked for a refund of the price difference and was told we weren’t entitled to one because we booked through Hotels.com. Had we booked direct, it would’ve been different. It felt like we were being treated unfairly based on how we booked. We lost two nights of sleep and had to accept a downgraded room for the rest of our stay. Staff were polite, but we didn’t feel truly supported. The hotel was nice, and check-in was smooth, but they failed to provide the basic service expected—a quiet, restful night’s sleep. We won’t be returning.
