This is a fortress from 1682 that has been renovated recently. They have been able to tastefully combine the old elements with modern touches. The rooms are incredible. There is even a Turkish bath in the room. The balcony of our room overlooked the infinity pool and had beautiful scenery. Restaurant is another amazing place - a natural cave. It is incredibly beautiful. Breakfast was delicious with high quality products. Service was top all around. It is a unique place and we highly recommend it. Only about 9 min car ride to Sassi (the historic old town).

A gem managed by amazing people

The place is simply magnificent and the staff is so incredibly nice and helpful you do not want to leave. Only (small) minuses : it is located a couple of miles out of Matera and the address provided by hotels.com is not complete (better have your smartphone open on maps) and the pool is not warmed which is important to know if you go early in the season.

Tranquil setting.

Lovely place to stay on outskirts of Matera. Parking is difficult in Maters, so this place on edge of town was good. Short drive into town - old town bit within walking distance. Very well appointed place, with large spacious room. Lots of nice courtyards, and the pool would have been good in summer. Nice buffet breakfast in large historic room. Staff very friendly. Check GPS directions before you drive there, as the street it is in had two branches - one of which led to a private dwelling. Best to find in daylight. Building works nearby were very noisy early in the am.

Unique building, great rooms and views

Amazing hotel, with great architecture, beautiful countryside views, a gorgeous infinity pool and very comfortable rooms. A good breakfast as well, continental style mostly, though. You can watch the sunset from the infinity pool, with the hills in the background, which is beautiful. The room was large and very comfortable, with everything you needed - the internet was a bit of a problem once you wanted to connect to more than two devices, though. Breakfast is literally in a cave, which gives it another flavor. Could be closer to Matera, though - you definitely have to drive there.

A beautiful oasis, with amazing views

Wow! One word! It is a beautiful oasis - on a remote hillside on the very edge of town, in keeping with Matera's cave-like dwellings. Perfectly appointed; large bedrooms (we had a suite near the pool area); which looked brand new, and were spotlessly clean. Mini-bar (but had to pay for anything); coffee machine (two free pods a day); walk-in rain shower; flat-screen TV with lots of channels. Even a weird separate smoking "room" at the rear of each room. The pool area is even more beautiful - well proportioned sunbathing beds, umbrellas, free towels... and a wonderful infinity pool over-looking the amazing hillside opposite. Just gorgeous. Quiet and peaceful and romantic. We were out-of-season (September), so there were only half a dozen other couples there... but there aren't that many bedrooms, so would hope would be the same at peak times. Gardens are equally amazing, as you walk up to reception and breakfast. Breakfast was a little disappointing. In an amazing cave room, but the choice limited. Orange juice had run out by 9.30am (with no more); bread limited (no croissants); nice ham, but only tiny slices of cheese; some OK cold pizza; no fruit (apart for some grapes); loads and loads of cakes (nice, but a little odd that this was the focus); great coffee freshly made; and a huge honey comb. It felt very much Five Star, but lacked the delivery - perhaps better at peak season. Worth pointing out it is out of town, and not an easy walk in.
