Como is a very beautiful, elegant, romantic and well-kept city, surrounded by medieval walls that house the historic center, with cobbled streets and magnificent squares. Very elegant is the lakefront with several 18th-century villas and the Tempio Voltiano. Among the most fascinating aspects of this city are undoubtedly the enchanting villas, world-famous for their magnificence and manicured gardens. Among the most famous are Villa Olmo, a fine example of neoclassical architecture and the site of important exhibitions, and “La Rotonda,” a villa built at the end of the 18th century and the seat of the Provincial Administration. Near the lakefront is the city's main square, dominated by the Broletto (the old municipal palace built in 1215). The square also houses the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, one of the most fascinating examples of Italian Gothic art.
