Explore the local countryside with a variety of picturesque walks straight from the front door such as the Esk Valley Walk which takes you through woodlands and streams to Grosmont, from where the North York Moors Steam Train departs, and beyond. The Cleveland Way is only a few miles away giving you panoramic coastal walks to the pretty fishing villages and smugglers coves of Robin Hood’s Bay, Ravenscar , Runswick Bay and Staithes.

It is just a few minutes drive or a short bus ride to the popular ancient seaport of Whitby, from where Captain James Cook set sail for Australia. Whitby boasts long sandy beaches, narrow cobbled streets and the famous abbey and St Mary’s Church, reached by the 199 ancient steps, where Bram Stoker found his inspiration for his novel, Dracula. If cycling is your forte then you can follow the route of the Tour de Yorkshire which has been passing through Whitby and surrounding villages every year since its inception.
