Stayed here overnight. Appears renovated? Luxurious, modern look. Received a txt that morning to say room was ready. Arrived to be told the room was still "dirty" (poor choice of words) and would I like to "go for a walk into town and come back later ?". I said no. Informed them of the txt and suggested they find a room that was ready. With assistance from another staff member same done. The room was smallish, but lovely and plush. Received complimentary drinks voucher. Visited the bar. Fantastic view of the city. Again luxurious decor and feel. Barman extremely charming. Buffet breakfast the next day for $1. Special price at the time. Magnificent. Attractive staff. Some improvement in attention to detail required. Removing used dishes in a timely manner. I placed them on another table. The tables are small and things need to be removed promptly. Again ... fabulous views.
First of all: the beds are heavenly! So in case you just want a great bed to sleep in: this hotel should be totally fine. Except for that: we were disappointed. We stayed three nights/ four days, mainly because the GM wrote here on TA as reaction on one comment that the fitness-center and indoor pool will be ready at the latest after two more weeks...but still: when we arrived, 15 days after she wrote that, it was NOT ready. We mentioned that, showed the TA-response to the receptionist and asked how this can happen...with the information, that we may expect an answer the following morning. This answer came Not the morning after, but at night when we returned from the city with a letter in the room: saying the pool will be ready the day after. But: unfortunately no excuse! For a hotel of that standard an excuse was definitely expected (free breakfast, discount on the parking -we stayed in the garage for 90NZD, etc.). Regarding the rooms: - The switches for the lights were absolutely unorganized, strange. - A Toilet-brush was missing/ not installed. Regarding our room 311: It was VERY, unacceptably LOUD from early morning on!!! The „staff doors“ were on the other side of the aisle and the members of staff using these doors did not even attempt to close the doors with the lever- and loudly closed the doors. (Every 10mins) Overall: Nice new renovated venue...but a lot of potential wasted!
Somewhat disappointed with the hotel but the staff were great and did their best to help if everyday possible. I had contacted the hotel 2 days before arrival to discuss wheelchair access and rooms for disable guests but this was not passed on to the department as promised
The positives first - the service is helpful and friendly and the location is good - a hilly, brisk but short walk to the City and major sites. The rooms are OK but tight fitting - you sleep and shower but not much room to do much else in your room, and I was allocated a lower floor - with a view of a retaining wall around 1 metre from my window. In summary, reasonable but I wouldn't put it on a must visit list for sure.
So near and yet so far. I booked this hotel as it had a swimming pool - except it didn't as it was being refurbished as I was told on arrival. I booked my stay of four nights as three separate consecutive bookings as travel plans change and my father and his gf were coming from the UK to join me on the final night. The "two rooms on the final night" was confirmed at check-in and re-confirmed the next day but still didn't stop the three phone calls to interrupt my business trip just to make certain that I hadn't made an error. Not to worry if I did; I know from previous experience with the Grand Mercure that you'd be lucky to receive a refund even if your house fell down. The restaurant was excellent and the service there very good indeed but the credit card machine was struggling with the WiFi - this led to an impression that I'd been double charged as some bills went onto the room and others onto the credit card even although I'd understood all eventually got through on the CC. One lift was out of service during my entire stay. One night, I stood in another lift for around two minutes with it going no-where before the doors opened again; I reported this and was advised I needed to press the button - Really? I didn't realise you had to press the button and the lift couldn't read my mind. Finally, my father and I witnessed a tradesman reverse his trailer into a car in the hotel car park and took photos of this and took them to the reception. A disinterested "thank-you sir" .... no request for the photos, no follow-up; I've no idea if the matter was resolved or not. I doubt I'll be back - for all the restaurant and the service there were excellent, the rest of the service experience was dreadful and you can do far better for less money elsewhere in Wellington.
Nice view of the city from the 9th floor. Comfortable rooms, good bed. Decent price. My only complaint is that their "free wifi" is only 1000 MB and then it cost $10 per day. I would greatly prefer free, no strings attached. Although not in the heart of the CBD, a relatively short walk to most everywhere.

This Mercure has taken on renewed life with the latest refurbishment. The rooms have all been redone from carpet and beds to bathroom. The dark black and gold interior style may not be to everyone's particular taste but I'm a firm believer when it comes to hotels that remodeling is a refreshing necessity when it comes to properties occupied by a different person more than 100's of times a year. The upside of this Mercure, on an outskirt hill, are the views from many of the rooms and definitely the bar and breakfast room -- the downside especially in bad weather (and windy / wet Welly can be that way) is it's not really close to ANYthing. So' it's down the hill to Cuba, Courtney or anywhere in the CBD -- a taxi ride if when walking is not an good option. We were welcomed with a nice note and the GM's business card plus a generous plate of chocolates. This property has definitely recharged and is worth a revisit if you were here before the remodel.
Smallish but very well appointed room. Immaculately clean. Very pleasing to see generous curtains which block out the light. Very fast and welcoming check in possibly because late on Sunday. Fast room service and good quality of food. I have stayed at many hotels in Wellington and this rates amongst the best for me as a single guest. I will be back.
Can I have a bottle opener sent to my room, which the chap behind the bar said should already be there, but doesn’t know where I should look for it, because no one in management has bothered to tell him. I search for 15 minutes and end up ringing down to get one sent up. 30 mins later - no bottle opener. I ring back and am lied to that the restaurant is busy (I inspected - one guest - 5pm). I was assured it would be sent right up - another lie and so after 10 mins I went down and got it from reception myself. Very very slack and dishonest service. If you want cheap and shoddy - stay here. They should all go and work for a government department where their slackness and dishonesty will match requirements.
