We were not staying at the hotel but intended to use the restaurant and bar as we had rented a friends villa behind Mawe for 5 days for 3 people. The first evening we walked to the hotel for food and drinks. We arrived and it looked a splendid place, great looking building and fantastic views. The bar and restaurant were very quiet. We ordered some drinks from a very funny barman and was told the restaurant was not open until a bit later, which we had no problem with, so we sat overlooking the sea with our drinks. When the restaurant did open we ordered our food. The starters arrived and were very good. When the main course arrived which took approx 45mins, 2 of 3 meals (curries) were full of salt and were both cold & completely inedible. The 3rd meal (fish) was burnt and rock hard. We called the waiter and advised all of the food was inedible and we requested new food with no salt and fresh soft unburnt fish. The waiter took the food and we were presented with new food, which again were all inedible. We requested for the chef to come out, which he did and we explained that the food was not up to standard. His reply was that he cooked it again for us again, he clicked his mouth and walked off. We said to the waiter we were not going to eat again and would just go to the bar. We asked to see the manager. An Italian male arrived and said he was the manager. We explained the situation in full and he said he would speak to the chef. He returned and told us he would give us a discount on the food! We asked why a discount when we didn't and couldn't eat the food!! He explained that we should have complained earlier - we had! He then started getting angry while there were also other customers in the bar and started waving his arms and shouting at us "What do you want me to do? Do you want to get a knife and kill me?. Go on then, kill me!" We had to ask what his problem was, but he continued to shout. We just said bring the drinks bill for which we would pay and the starters. By now the manager was still shouting and then walked off. We paid for our starters and drinks and left and started to use Hemingways, what an amazing place, great food, great staff and no stress! Wow, Mawe what a place, terrible food, terrible management and response. It is very obvious why we had the response from the chef because he sees his bosses do the same to customers. They have no respect and do not value customers at all and are quite happy to release poor quality food and still expect people to pay for it. We have since found out that they do not employ fully qualified and experienced chefs, but employ a local and teach them what to do. Well that didn't work did it? Avoid, avoid, avoid.

We haven’t stayed in the Mawe resort but we went there for a family dinner. The location is amazing and nicely decorated. The food was pretty good, the barman made up pretty good cocktails. We spent there a very nice evening.

We booked a sea view suite with a nice king bed and a comfy single bed for our tween daughter. The room was large and nicely appointed. The “suite” designation meant that we had a large, private balcony with a couple sitting areas with an amazing view of the azure sea. We opted for breakfast only, and it was very good, generous, with hot and cold options daily, fruit, fresh juice, real coffee, tea, etc. We learned that dining out is limited in Watamu so half or full board might have been worth the money. But we did fine and enjoyed the hotel restaurant as well as other places in town. Tuk-tuks or taxis are needed to get to the main town, or motorbike taxis for those less safety conscious. :-) A few detractors: -as so many other reviewers noted, there is no drinking water provided, with only 2 small, overpriced bottles in the minibar. Since we were forewarned we picked up a 10-liter bottle on the way to the hotel for Ksh.170. Figure 2 liters per person per day to stay healthy in a hot climate and we went through about 20 liters in six days not counting water we bought with meals. -although no water was provided, we were greeted in the room by a notice that no outside food or drink are allowed. We found that unnecessarily unfriendly, but felt our water was a health necessity. -while the value for the quality of accommodation was good for the area, the addition of a 3.5% charge for credit card use was an unpleasant surprise at the end of a day filled with hustlers and cheats during travel. Accepting credit cards was a deciding factor in choosing Mawe as most resorts there require a bank transfer in advance. Making this more clear in the booking process is a must.

An oasis not to be missed. Quiet, very comfortable rooms. lovely decor and friendly staff. Menu could have been a little more adventurous but that was the only slight downside otherwise 5***** Looking forward to visiting again as so enjoyable.

Stayed there for 5 days and all in all had a nice time. Facilities with a lot of potential, very good pool, clean rooms with a bit of an ant problem, nice breakfast, very nice view, close to village centre. Unfortionatly service was very unstable. Only one enough qualified person found at the place( rest of the staff did not understand, were rolling eyes and taking minor requests somehow personally). Seemed like the manager also did not care about the clients- a simple hello would have done the trick!

Nice and cosy. If you are paying by credit card, please note the hotel charges 3.5 % fees on credit card transactions. Best pay via cash or best withdraw money from the local ATM There is a local beach, 5 minutes walk from the hotel. Please be careful with the tuktuk operators who over price their services. Tuktuk fare is 250 kes throughout Watamu, and motorbike should be 100 kes one way.

Had a lovely two weeks the staff are so friendly in particular Winnie receptionist Jacklin the spa girl and the massai security guards.... The boutique Hotel is on the outskirts of Watamu next to a lovely beach with a beautiful restaurant .. thanks Mawe

I stayed at Mawe on the 07/10/2018....We arrived close to 20:00 where we were shown to a room that was done up for us as I requested from the resort via email....the room smelled warm and wonderful of fragrances of aromas. The owner speaks broken english but assured us we could pay for the room the next day instead of before we checked in. lowlight was the wifi wasnt working for the entire resort due to windy conditions according to the owner it happened. The bedroom was really confortable. The chef didnt speak english but we got the barman to translate, pasta was really yummy as well as the fish we rdered for supper. Breakfast was stunning overlooking the pool, crepe and madiera cake with strong coffee and sum fresh fruit juice.........and sum italian breads.......only downside there isnt a swimming beach at the resort.....a beautiful sun tanning deck and pool and daybed.......there is a stair case that is little steep going down to the water below when there is low tide.......the swimming beach is right next door which is 5 to 10 mins walk when you go down the stairs .......low tide currently is from approx 09:00 to after 15:00...........if you want more info feel free to email rayhaanj@gmail.com

We’ve been at Mawe Resort for 5 days ; we couldn’t make best choice; great place in very nice location, amazing food and great feeling with all the staff; we had very good time and we’ll come back from Kenya fully recharged. Thanks a lot to the beautiful manager Beba, the best person to manage this Resort.

My wife and I spent three days at the Mawe resort during our honeymoon. The location, the facilities of the hotel and the staff were exceptional. It is the perfect place to relax, enjoy silence, look at the sea and have great Italian food. The room was perfect, the AC very well working and even mosquito repellent was provided. The resort has an access to the sea which enables you to walk during low tide to a small private beach where there is no single soul. At night we have preferred to go to the Papa Remo Restaurant, and the Mawe resort staff facilitated this by introducing to their "tuktuk" driver Francis who helped us discover other surroundings of the resort, namely the Safina beach which is to be visited. In short, top-class quality service.
