As a couple, we stayed here for a one-night stop-over to break the journey to Canberra. We had booked a “Business Room, Work Area, 1 Queen Bed” in mid-June for the stay in October, having been impressed by the hotel’s web-site description that this was a 4.5 star luxury hotel, the rooms being “spacious, tastefully decorated and well-appointed with modern conveniences”, and their photos supported this. At about $185 per night, the rate was comparatively high for a standard room, but seemed worth it. We arrived at about 2-30pm, tired, and looking forward to settling in to our room and relaxing, and our initial impressions were good. Reception was friendly and efficient, and we were invited to park in the basement carpark which was spacious and had direct lift access to all floors. Having carried our luggage up to our allotted room we were surprised to find that it was a disabled-access room, and that it was 1970’s style, not “tastefully modern” as described. This was most evident in the Bathroom which appeared to have the original tiling, fixtures and fittings, probably 30 or 40 years old. The room was cramped, containing a queen bed as promised, with an additional single bed in place of the sofa described, a small table with only one chair, not two, and a desk against the wall with one desk-chair, as well as the usual TV, robe, and cupboards containing the bar-fridge etc. The result was that this was not the spacious, stylishly modern room described and shown in the photos. The Bathroom was spacious, being designed for disabled guests, with shower chair, grab-rails etc but, as noted above, apparently having the original tiling, fixtures, etc, and a cloth shower curtain on a rail! The hand-held shower could only dribble water when fully on, which we only discovered in the morning. It was the worst shower we have experienced in a hotel. We could have gone back to reception and complained that we had been misled, and demanded a room of the standard described and as booked 4 months ahead, but having moved in, and being tired, we couldn’t face having to move our luggage to another room - that is assuming there could be another room available, which we doubted. Obviously it was our decision to remain in this room, because in our tired state we couldn’t face the alternative, but the room rate at $185 was exorbitant for what was provided, it being almost identical to the rate charged at our next two hotels - the Aria Hotel Canberra, and the Rydges Mount Panorama Bathurst, both providing modern, spacious, 1 bedroom suites with fully-fitted Kitchen with dish-washer, oven, microwave etc, Dining area with 4 seat table, Lounge area with sofa and coffee table, and a furnished Balcony, as well as under-cover parking. This hotel is probably quite good if you are placed in one of the refurbished rooms, but the room we were given is sub-standard for even a “budget” motel, which this hotel claims not to be. It may be argued by the hotel that we should have raised the issue with them at the time, but as weary travellers, the last thing one wants at the end of a long drive is to have to challenge Management over the room allocated not being what was booked and expected, and possibly then having to remove luggage etc, and move to another room. And this should not be expected of us. The hotel would have known that this room was of a lesser standard than the others, but said nothing, whereas they should have openly declared the deficiencies of this room compared with the claimed spacious, tasteful and modern 4.5 star luxury rooms. Travellers considering booking at this hotel should be aware that not all rooms are of the claimed standard and, before moving in, be prepared to check the room they are allocated to ensure that they get what they were expecting, and what they are being charged for. As for the hotel, it should honestly and openly advise guests that this room is not of the same standard as the others.

Stayed here 2 nights, great helpful staff, clean, rooms are a good size, bed was ok but pillows were hard for me. Good restaurant and bar at good prices, located to many places to eat and city centre. Would stay here again

Very happy with the overall experience. Great room, good restaurant and reasonable gym for a country hotel. Pleasantly surprised to have the attached on my car when I left. A nice touch. Friendly staff as well.

Rooms are great, staff are excellent. The Atrium Restaurant staff are great. The menu is far out kicking its coverage...reads far better than it eats. For the prices...you got to make your own pasta guys, & work the tomato paste through the dish...ravioli was disappointing....capers won't save it. For $36 your steak was average...mash let you down...badly....it's mash man...lose the lumps right? Kids pizza was inconsistent...one ok...one burnt...cremated....that's a 50% effort?? All in all...pick up the pace for the prices guys

First time I have been to Wangaratta, I stayed here for one night for work. Location is great, near coles, service station, fast food and other restaurants. Check in was fast and all the staff were lovely. The room was very clean, the bathroom must have just been renovated, the shower is great! The bed had a choice of pillows, a woollen blanket AND an electric blanket! There is ample undercover parking and they cleaned the windscreen of my work car and left a note saying safe driving, that was so thoughtful. An excellent stay. The staff are doing an excellent job and management should be proud of that! Full marks for a country hotel.

Only stayed one night at the Gateway but it was a most enjoyable stay. The room was spacious and very well appointed. We went for a King Spa and that was a great choice. The bed was very comfortable and the spa at the end of a busy work day was a great way to wind down. The room was quiet and the drapes blocked out the light to make for a good sleep. Reception staff were very friendly and helpful with a few questions we had. Wifi was good enough for our business needs. Breakfast the next morning was an extensive buffet. We didn't opt for the cooked option but what we saw looked good. A good spot for weary travellers!

There was a large group staying here and we all just loved it. The rooms were very clean, spacious and modern. The bathrooms were much the same. The kids loved the pool area which they were able to use during the colder months as the pool was heated! This was a great way for the kids to finish off a busy day. We ate in the restaurant on site and WOW it was just delicious. Fabulous!!

My wife and I stayed overnight and enjoyed the Quality. Large, king room tucked away from any noise. Busy with functions, staff were very professional. Plenty of parking, close to city center and restaurants. Thanks Heather. Super comfy bed....

Our rooms was nicely furnished and well maintained. Staff were professional and courteous. Highly recommended for a Wangaratta stay. Only down side was noise from both functions at the hotel one night and road noise. Pick a room away from the main road if you can.

Stayed here on a few occasions and rooms always comfortable and clean. Pool area would be inviting if not mid-winter. Convenient underground parking with lift to room level. Staff friendly and helpful. We did not eat in house as preferred the exercise after a long day in the car, so walked to a nearby historic pub for a meal.
