Hotel Olmeca Plaza2.5 out of 5.0

Stayed at the Olmeca for a week with friends. The room was a basic room, not as nice as the outside looks. Two of the problems was once a day your room key was shut off so you would have to go get it redone, very annoying. And the wifi was almost worthless. Service at the restaurant and bar was great. But other than that an okay place. The Federal Police have set up on the second floor, so many police with m16 rifles walking around, being a former Marine I had no problem with it and probably made it a very safe place to stay. It is a very close to downtown shopping.
Villahermosa was out in and out between Palenque so we didn't come to explore the city but the hotel provided the decent nights sleep we wanted for a budget price before our morning flight to Tulum. The surrounding area was busy and provided us a tiny taste of the city. We had elote for 15 pesos and fresh tamales for 11 pesos. The hotel was perfect for what we needed it or.
The hotel was good. The rooms were comfortable. The bathroom was kind of modern and clean but it does not have air conditioner. There is a little window that is open and you can hear all the noise from outside and also feel the heat from outside. The staff was terrible. Make sure you buy the buffet when you book the room if not you are going to go through a lot of hassle. The staff gives you different prices and can be rude! The food is good but after getting different prices for the same buffet, it gets annoying.
This hotel was cheap and safe, but the environment is shabby, the front desk staff rather surly. There has been an attempt to update the bathrooms and the beds are comfortable, if you like the hard Mexican beds (which we do). But be forewarned, the policia federal seems to have headquartered here and we stayed on the second floor which was like being in a military bunker. There were all sorts of police in full regalia, with AK 47s and face masks. It made us uneasy. This hotel is not close to La Venta, but a taxi can get you there easily. Take the yellow taxis and spend only 25 pesos. If the hotel summons a cab it will cost you 2 1/2 times that. The restaurant at the hotel was the one bright spot - the food good and the staff friendly and accommodating. Wifi reception in the room was spotty.
Great pool and restaurant. Close to airport about 15 minutes away, hotel will provide shuttle about 90 pesos each. Really helpful staff who spoke some English and were all eager to please. City itself just a stopover to take an early flight to Cancun after staying in Palenque. Not much special about Villahermosa.
This is a very good hotel. I am confused by some of the negative comments written here. We had no problems with any alarms during the night. The lights, electricity, and airconditioning worked well and all of the time. The airconditioner is a bit louder than average, but this creates some white noise, which is great for sleep. There is minimal street noise other than what is expected in the center of any large city, and it didn't affect our sleep at all. The employees at the hotel are fantastic: great service, helpful, and attentive. I was humbled by their friendliness. The pool is refreshing (although does get a bit warm in the sun all day). The gym is dated, and all of the machines aren't hooked up to electricity, but there are a lot of free weights. We got breakfast included every morning with our stay. Also the WiFi coverage was fantastic. The rooms are large and the bathrooms are pretty huge (with a large shower with ample hot and cold water). All in all, we were very satisfied with our stay at the Olmeca Plaza Hotel and definitely would return again. The price is very competitive, and we had a pleasant time there. It was very refreshing, and the staff made us feel incredibly welcome.
This centrally-located hotel served as our bunker for 2 nights during our tour of archeological sites and a cacao farm in the area (see my review of La Venta). There must be better hotels in the city, though the Olmeca fits right in with the urban jungle surrounding it. The restaurant/bar is a pleasant oasis serving good food and drinks at reasonable prices. Try the tuna salad served in avocado shells or the tasty club sandwich, along with a creamy pinna colada. Our room was decent with a workable air conditioner that almost masked the street noise below our room. You’ll still want a good set of ear plugs. The cold water in the shower did not work, but not to worry since the hot water barely reached the tepid level by the end of my shower. If you can, go to bed early, so that if the smoke alarm starts beeping intermittently around 1 AM, you won’t mind quite as much. I covered my head with a pillow and almost slept through the second round of beeping around 3 AM. Think you might get the front desk to fix the alarm before your second night? Think again. We tried, but no success (they seemed rather nonchalant when I reported it). But, you may sleep better the second night when the electricity goes out about 2 AM, as this quickly quiets the street party outside the hotel. You may feel a little stuffy, but it will be a quiet stuffy. The a.c. came on again later, but I hope you won’t have an early flight as we did. The a.c. was on, but the lights were not. We finished packing etc. by flashlight, the final curtain on what was a most memorable, if not delightful, stay at Olmeca Plaza.
I stayed in this hotel because of its convenient location in the city center as I was going to visit several businesses in the area. This is a refurbished old hotel in the city center. The rooms are old, there is a constant smell of humidity, cable had static, A/C was old (like 15 - 20 years old) and linen wasn't confortable. I made and paid for a room with "hot breakfast" which wasn't bad, but from day 2 they took it away clamming a policy change; although the front desk people said it was included, at the restaurant they didn't want to serve it. Overall, a bad experience; I will never go back to this hotel.
Modern and interesting lobby. Rooms are good quality and very clean. Good Wi-Fi. Helpful front desk and bellman. Parking in secure garage in the building. This hotel is right in the center of town and a good location for walking around.
Good value, excellent service in this well-located, nicely set up hotel. Prior reviews were generally helpful. Best: warm welcome, good internet, easy parking. Only big issue: no hot water in the morning even after running it awhile.
