During my trip to Laos, I stay a few days with Don chan Palace. It was one of the good hotel in Vientiane, it may not a five stars but may earned 3 1/2 to 4 stars when compared to holiday Inn, sheraton, and Hyatt hotel. A lot chinese and Japanese as well as foreigners would stay at this place. Breakfast was okay and served free but Dinner was quite expenses, dance and traditional show every night. you can walk to distance night market along the Mekong River bank. Corner room, you can view the city, talak sao (morning market as well as Patuxay or Anousavary. also view Mekong River along the bank with Anouvong status, and night market. If you want a good deal, please book through internet, not walk in.. I got very good deal about $60.00 per night.
Visited with my family as external guests to have a swim in the pool on a warm day. Pros: nice pool, shaded. Basically empty. Good view of the sunset over mekong river. Cons: expensive, 50k/35k kip pr guest. Takes 45 minutes to order something to drink from the pool bar
I don't know how get 5 stars, it should be, too be very generous 3 stars. The room with window looking the town of Vientiane is not too large, just ok with wardrobe, dressing table, coffee table with 2 chairs and fridge. The mattress is the worst I slept in all my travel around the world. You feel the sprinklers inside the mattress, incredible hard. The bathroom with bath tab and old hand shower is most ugly and old. Nothing was working how should be, the water in the sink was going slowly, the blocked toilet on my 3 nights, luckily after wait and wait and try to flushing many times, it start working, the lamp switch in the middle of 2 single beds didn't working, always light day and night but after reported to reception, it was fine. On my last morning, before departed from hotel, early morning, I try have a shower but the water was cold. Wait and wait, it start be warm but not enough to have a proper hot shower. The breakfast was only Chinese and if you arrive 1 hour before closing time, you don't found bread and very few cakes because Chinese guests eat all and staff never replace. Staff were nice and this was only my consolation. Only one time we used a free transport to centre town provided by hotel and we booked a return. Instead driver didn't turn up because we wait at the spot where take us in the morning but it was not the right place. Nobody told us and in any case, we wouldn't know where is the collected point, because it was the first day of our arrival and not know the town. We waiting and waiting at the place driver stopped us but after one hour, we decide come back to hotel by foot. Luckily not very far. We complain at the reception, everybody were sorry, it was a driver mistake and next day, it was delivered to my room a full basket of fresh fruits. Nice gesture to say sorry.
This is the highest point in Vientiane where you can have the great view of Mekong river and streets as well. The room is large, meals are Ok and staff is well-trained. Wifi Ok, of course. Highly recommended.
Despite a little rundown, and probably at a good 4* level and not 5*, Don Chan Palace is an excellent value for money choice. We had a room on the 11th floor with panoramic view over river Mekong & the view of the most amazing sunsets. Rooms are large and despite furniture being old they are well maintained and clean. Breakfast is exquisite and offers a large variety of both European and Asian dishes - while some are cooked for you on the spot. Dining in the hotel is a good option as it offers a diverse selection of foods (this is for the main hotel restaurant, there is also a Chinese restaurant which we didn’t try) at a very good value. There is a decently equipped gym & a swimming pool. Location might not be for everyone but it works if you are looking for a quiet base while exploring Vientiane. The hotel offers a shuttle bus to the city centre that runs every 2 hours, from 10am until 8pm (last pick up from the city centre is at 8.15pm) – it is an approximate 20’ – 25’ walk from the hotel to the city centre
Went for a business trip. When arrived, room was not ready even though it was past the check-in time. Hotel doesn't look to be full but still had to wait for my room. Went out, came back. Sprinklers was dripping, luckily it was near the door and didn't damage anything. Otherwise, stay was decent. Breakfast was normal, could have more choices.
I stayed for 1 night because next morning we have a plan to go to Vang Vieng. The room was perfect with full facilities and i go t a conner room and high floor "1123" them you can get a fantastic river view. Only one thing I disappointed "NO Bum gun toilet " but never mind all it good ! Pool: clean Fitness: good (This floor doesn't hot like a below review that mention) Staff: I love Concierge guy, Receptionist all them have a lot service mind and try to help us everything we need. (Thank you all you guy) Location: it's far from the downtown for the person who love party. But if you love to relax at a hotel this is a great place to stay. Overall I love here and the price not expensive Thank you very much and see you next time
The Don Chan Palace in Vientiane Lao, tried hard but fell short of a luxury hotel. Went I returned to the capital I found better. It was clean enough, and the food was okay. Location, Vientiane, is the smallest capital city in the world so no matter where you stay you are well placed. If they just tried a bit harder they'd get there, but for now l say,"look around".
Visiting for a major conference which meant the hotel was full. This put a significant strain on the infrastructure, from food venues, through to internet. The internet systems were not able to keep up with periods where it was virtually impossible to connect to the wifi. When it was possible the speeds were appalling. Early in the week before most attendees arrived internet was OK. As an indication of the strain on the hotel, at breakfast they couldn't keep up with the demand for coffee and tea, with the pots often empty, and the queue for eggs was even worse. The bed was incredibly hard. I doubled the duvet over and slept on that to try and get some tiny bit of give in the mattress. Others in our group complained of the same. The rooms to me just seemed tired. For the money I would stay somewhere else next time, even if the Don Chan was hosting the conference.
Nice hotel on the Mekong riverside. Affordable cocktails. Some expensive shops. It is likely the highest building in Vientiane more or less 15 stories I would guess. One of the rare hotel that has personalized match boxes!
