Had a wonderful break here in February 2018 having worried beforehand due to reading negative reviews on Trip Advisor. If you are doing this then do not worry. It is Tobago, not London or New York, so everything will not be so shiny new and efficient but do you want it to be? Just enjoy the Caribbean vibe and you will have a wonderful time. Rooms are large and comfortable and are cleaned well daily. The spa was good and the gym is well equipped. The restaurants are great, particularly Waves on the beach where the puddings are delicious. Barry who we met on the beach provided trips out with wonderful hospitality but if you want to simply stay at the hotel then the beach there is great, you are not hassled. Just go and enjoy it!
The problem with this hotel is that the potential is SO great but the staff fail to deliver in most cases. You feel that you want to shake them to get them motivated..... get a Customer Services Manager and a GOOD Hotel Manager who is visible. In fact we never saw him/her at all. The food on offer has contributed to much criticism but we found, as a pescatarian and a meat eater , that there was always something for both of us. Granted the bread is pretty boring & the orange juice at breakfast would be wonderful if it were freshly squeezed. However Sandra goes out of her way to accommodate any allergies or dislikes ...always willing to help. And Crystle the maitre de was the hardest worker of all the staff. Yes there are steep steps to the Waves Restaurant but what a joy it is to eat by the sea.. not something we can do now in London. This hotel MUST change its laid back, shoulder shrugging staff with some good training, and it’s dreadful attitude to residents safety with slippery tiles and unmarked steps. My husband had a fall which should have been easily avoidable but also could have resulted in a broken arm. If the hotel does change it could be a HUGELY desirable place to visit. Thanks to all those staff who did try ... we had a very good holiday despite the rain !
Hotel bit dated but so is island. Some Staff in hotel are dour others are great in reception cleaner spa. Lovely pool. Lots of steps down/up to beach if you have mobility problems. Food not too bad but minimal choices
Inconsistency springs to mind when reading the reviews of this hotel and I would use the same word to describe the hotel itself. Most people I met at the hotel had booked with Blue Bay Travel or Caribbean Warehouse and were expecting a four star hotel. Now we all know that star systems are different the world over but you would expect the same standard as other guest who had booked the same holiday but not here. Some people actually had ocean view rooms. Some did not. Some rooms had copious amounts of hot water: some had very little hot water. Some guests had only two tatty towels whilst others had a full set of luxury towels. Some guest rooms shared one bath robe whilst other rooms had two robes. You may consider these to be petty issues and may be more concerned with bigger issues such as the standard of the food. However the quality of food again suffered inconsistency. The main dining room served a buffet dinner. The starter consisted of a choice between a bowl of soup or a salad of bitter lettuce, tomato and cucumber. The main course consisted of rice, overcooked vegetables and a selection of meat and fish dishes one of each. If you chose to eat after eight in the evening the food was cool and stuck to the plate. You could book to dine in the waiter served Bistro where there was a rolling sevenday menu. Steak could be ordered on a Saturday night and it was quite acceptable if you scraped the barbeque sauce off it. The rest of the time the food was mostly inedible. In deed when the waiter was asked what he recommended he said he couldn't recommend anything. There was a restaurant on the beach that was part of the all inclusive deal at lunchtime. The food here was good but it did become repetitive if you were there for two weeks because most dishes were served with chips or a small salad as described before. There was consistency in the fish. It was always tuna. I did not expect gourmet food but I did expect to be served decent food and unfortunately this was not the case. I do not understand how people could say the food was good when it was obviously inedible. Much of the meat was unchewable. The vegetables were overcooked. The salad was bitter. The catch of the day was always tuna. Food was unseasoned: scrambled eggs were just eggs scrambled in oil in a pan. The condiment pots refused to give up their contents so you were unable to season your food. We enjoyed our holiday but only because of the people we met both other guests and most of the staff but with so many inconsitancies and such poor food I do not recommend this hotel.
This hotel has very slippery tiles on ramps and bridges, especially when wet. At least three people have slipped within the first few days of my stay so far, I witnessed someone slipping and banging their head quite badly. When reported to management, nothing was done to immediately mitigate the obvious hazard and risk. Hotel staff are fully aware of the problem. The bar staff stated they were aware of numerous similar incidents in recent times. When I reported my concerns to both reception and then the duty manager, I felt my comments were not taken seriously and I was being ridiculed when expressing my concerns. There is no concern for hotel guests and someone is likely to be seriously injured if no action is taken. I suggest avoiding this hotel if possible, raising your concerns with your tour rep as I have done or be well prepared to litigate for negligence if you become a victim!
Stayed here in February hotel looks bit tired but having seen round island was a bit in keeping with the rest but what it lacks is staff that know what they are doing and not all trainees. I think this hotel has been one of the best in the past and is now trying to get up there again. It lacks attention to detail and atmosphere ( nothing to keep clients in complex, no entertainment other than 1-2 hrs once or twice a week between 6-8). All inclusive is limited not like elsewhere you may have been. Frequently ran out of gin. Breakfast could improve by adding more choice of breads fruit etc. Cooked breakfast tries to cater for everyone one and the guys are really cheery who serve it, lunch could be taken in one of two places. The Caribbean bistro or waves on the beach (accessed by too many steps down) the bistro has choice of 3 items (if all avail) as same menu for set days but very nice freshly cooked food. Waves same menu daily fresh cooked to order and on all inc till 5 for LGC and GB residents but also open to non residents. Here you can eat drink and watch the waves on the beach with lovely cheery staff (no sun beds as public beach). Dinner either in waves (pay) or elsewhere. Hotel all inc buffet bit hit miss if you find something you like or book Caribbean Rooms were like most hotel rooms mostly with sea views. Pool lovely with swim up bar (when open staff shortages and carnival) boutique was closed and you had to get the reception staff ( always cheery happy to help) to open for you to look. This hotel could improve by having staff that know what they are doing and not being sour faced that could turn milk and some TLC and attention to detail ie repair cracked paint on outside areas clean lighting round pool area etc and paint lanterns which are weathered etc The spa is fabulous but could use more staff than two ( both really lovely and rogers massages are great) it could easily hold at least a dozen staff In all we had a fab holiday some of the staff were great but a few others let them down badly around hotel our rooms were clean and fresh most of the food was appetising apart from. buffet dinner but that’s my opinion others in party thought some was not bad. Hotel not exactly as advertised but a good base to travel around from -we hired a car for a couple of days each week to travel around. Winding roads
We have just returned (February 2018)from Tobago. We stayed at Le grand courlan resort. It was all inclusive holiday. The breakfast was good . There was plenty of choice for the drinks.Lunch at beachside in Waves and in Caribean bistro. Waves was more popular Dinner was buffet and served in Pinnacles. There was good choice of food. The rooms were spacious and clean but could do with touch of paint. All the staff were friendly polite and helpful and any problems with the room were dealt very quickly. We had a great time.
The Island is beautiful, very unspoilt - the beaches are do die for... the people are very friendly and laid back.. Edge of the Reef restaurant is a MUST, the food is fantastic - it definitely rivals The Seahorse which also does fab food, both of these are near the Courland resort. In Charlottesville is a fab eatery Sharon & Phebs, great shrimps, and Gemma's which every one seems to know was also a great experience with great shrimps. The Nylon pool and boat trip is a must - what a fabulous day, booked by our lovely Rep Judith from Teds Sunshine Tours, what a lovely lady! The Heritage beach at pigeon point is also to die for... lovely sandy, great food, beers, there are good facilities plus fab ice cream!!! We stayed at the NOT SO Grand Courlan, it has certainly seen better days... my hates were the dirty bathroom, I doubt its seen a scrubbing brush in years...the room was a great size though and we had an excellent view of the sea. The bed was made each day and fresh towels provided, the floor was swept and washed, but only the bits you could easily see - don't look behind anything ...The tennis courts need attention, the rackets are Ok, but I would recommend taking your own, balls are also very worn. The swimming pool is fab and it was good to see that it was regularly cleaned and checked. The umbrellas could do with being replaced they offered very little shade as most in tatters. I wish I could say the rest of the place was clean... it lacked detailed attention in a lot of areas. The food was passable and if you are a veggie or vegan forget it you will starve..... I got the impression there is a cash flow issue at this hotel. I need to give a shout out to Christina at Waves restaurant on the beach, she was beautiful with a great big smile to greet you each and every time. The chefs, especially our breakfast chefs lovely and cheerful and polite. Roger Moor in the spa, excellent massage! Petra on reception who was always helpful. However, there were certain members of staff who are definitely dragging the place down....the one who came from the Hilton to work, she really needs to learn some manners. I have no idea why some of the staff were so 'off', but it really needs to change. Most things can be forgiven, but staff attitude is something that is most off putting - so please if any owners or managers are reading this from the not so Grand Courlan - please sort your staff out! Would I go back - yes to Tobago, NO to the not so Grand Courland.....
We enjoyed our stay here. The room we had was quite large and very clean. The view of the pool, gardens and see was great. We had a small issue with our safe but it was sorted while we were at breakfast. Reception staff were always helpful . The pool area was good, plenty of sun beds and sunshades at all times of the day. It was also spotlessly clean. The only negative is that swim up bar was not open most of the time, but hey there was another bar a few paces away so cocktails o'clock was never spoilt. The restaurants generally good. This is all inclusive like I have not experience before, all the food is served by the chefs for you. The food was always very good. The pinnacle restaurant had an amazing view. Some of the the waitresses could have smiled a little more but then that happens anywhere. Generally the service was good. Special mention to Roy at breakfast and a lady who insisted we tried her soup at dinner were brilliantt. Sorry I did not make a note of her name but she will know who I mean and her soups were so tasty. The two lunch restaurants were also very good, waves especially. Appropriately named. Waves is right on the beach. Food is great, was an amazing place, all inclusive with waitress service, I have never had that before. Great cocktail list too. On balance we had a great two week stay, a bit more entertainment would have added to our experience but it didn't spoil it. We met some great people and wemade our own special times. Thank you to all the staff who helped us to a great time
beautiful resort, but i went for a wedding in march 2017 right after carnival and the staff in this place zero there was like 1 person to attend to everything , the resort is stunning and absolutely beautiful but definitely do not go carnival season. but we made the best of t and had a blast.
