What a great location only 5 minutes walk from the beach 10 mins from the town centre and 15 mins from the main Ferry Terminal to Sydney. This Guest House run by Dev and his wife who are very friendly and knowledgeable always available to help you plan your trips, is very clean and homely and has excellent facilities, patio and barbecue area at the back, tv lounge with satellite and a well equipped kitchen with two large fridges to keep your wine cool. There are four Restaurants on your doorstep serving great breakfast lunch and dinner. Rooms are a little small but perfectly adequate after all you will hardly be there which is why we found that a hotel would have been a waist of money there is too much to see and do. Will definitely be Back.
Dev the owner is lovely and makes you very welcome. We paid for a family room even though just 2 of us as we have quite a lot of luggage. The other rooms are a reasonable size and both en suite or shared bathroom available if you want a cheaper option. Kitchen area was clean and tidy but that is really down to you and the other guests ! Great TV which mostly we had to ourselves. I felt very comfortable there, we stayed 6 nights. Great location for beac, wharf and shops. Wifi was ok in the bedrooms but a bit hit and miss - better in the lounge.
We stayed there as a family (4 people) over NYE and picked that hostel because all other places were full already. The room was obviously for 2 people and they had just shoved 2 more beds in the corridor : we didn't have any space to even open our suitcases (see attached pictures). The room was right under the roof and super hot (not A/C), only a really loud fan. The bathroom was dirty, mold was on the window and in the shower. We stayed for 5 nights and nobody cleaned our room in that time : we had to expressly ask for them to give us new towels. The staff wasn't friendly and quite rude whenever we had a question (like about them cleaning the room). The common area was super dirty : garbage can was just overflowing (see attached picture), cutlery and plates weren't clean (we had to clean them again every time we wanted to use them) and crumbs and food rests were all over the place. Wifi wasn't working properly all the time and only in the lobby. Would definitely NOT advise to stay there !
I booked the Manly Beach House online through Booking.com which stated I could cancel for free up until 14th Jan 2017. In mid December the owner rang me and told me that my full payment was due. A little confused (but not home to check my documents) I paid over the phone with visa, as we had full intentions of going on our holiday. However due to our grain harvest being later than usual we had to cancel (much to our disappointment). I cancelled well before the 14th Jan via booking.com & then received a phone call from the owner saying I was not entitled to any refund due to the holiday period. The email confirmation from the MBH stated no refunds from 1st December - 15th January, however we were not booked into the hotel till 20th January. I reported this to Booking.com who phoned them & they told Booking.com they would refund me the next day. This did not happen. It wasn't until I made a second call to booking.com a week or so later that I was again promised a refund. This finally arrive today, however it has taken them more than 3 weeks to repay me and after a number of calls to both the hotel and Booking.com. I had also booked 3 other hotels as part of our East Coast Holiday plus car hire. 2 hotels and the car hire all took a deposit & refunded this within 48 hours. I do not believe I would have received my refund ($1000+) if I had not followed this up vigorously. I must say Booking.com provided excellent backup service. In hindsight, it looks like we were lucky to have missed staying here after now reading the large number of negative reviews. Just a note of caution, please don't pay upfront if you have booked through a booking agent as I now realise that this was not necessary & had we been booked in for dates prior to 15th January I would have been "tricked" in to losing the full amount. Very disappointing but perhaps a blessing in disguise.
At first the owners appear very friendly and welcoming. I booked via Hotels.com which advises there is "partially open bathroom facilities" in the room, whatever that means, but there was only shared bathrooms and it also advised you can check in from midday, apparently this isn't the case. We had to leave our luggage in the lounge area (no storage room available) until we could check in at 2pm. Rooms are VERY basic; no air con, no fridge, poor access to power points, can either have fan on or lamp on but not both and room was very small. Beds are uncomfortable and pillows are flat. We were in Room 1 which backs on to the main road and is very noisy. When I asked the owner if we could move rooms because of the noise his response was "it's next to a main road, what can you do?" Like, move us to a different room! The walls in the room were also grubby, as were the blinds. There is 1 female bathroom and 1 male bathroom for 10 bedrooms and the kitchen facilities are very minimal; a microwave from the 80's and no stove top to cook food. There are 2 fridge/freezers in the kitchen. Free tea/coffee isn't replenished everyday. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. You're only paying for its location. You pay less for a private room in a backpacker hostel and get better facilities! The advert for this place was very misleading. Such a disappointment.
Stayed here with my daughter and two friends. Hostel was busy and noisey into the early hours of both mornings, lots of slamming doors and loud voices including the owners. Beds were of poor quality and pillows very flat. Extremely small rooms with access to power points blocked by beds. Manager was initially friendly but a bit inappropriate calling us repeatedly whilst en- route to get out ETA and entering our rooms while we were there to test a light globe that was not working. On our final night we had issues with a locked door that we did not have keys to. When we rang for assistance he arrived 15 minutes later demanding to know why we had locked this particular door. Have never been scolded like this by a proprietor before so was very unimpressed. He was extremely rude and defensive when challenged about this incident. Will not stay here again and could not recommend it to anyone either.
The family room we had was on the ground floor. It was clean, a bit small but was enough for we only needed the place to sleep for 2 nights. Very close to the beach and few mins walk to shops, The Corso and the Manly wharf. The owners, Dev and Shanti, were very accommodating and very friendly. Dev even gave a souvenir to my daughter who was the same age as Dev's granddaughter. Highly recommended for families especially on a budget.
Clean basic accommodation in handy location near North Steyne Beach with great eateries and shops nearby. Car parking is a problem. Our front rooms were affected by night traffic noise. However it's location was so good that I would stay there again!
Its a small clean hotel with a friendly host. We stayed in the family room, at the top of the stairs over the lounge and kitchen areas next to the front door. The room was clean and tidy perfect for an overnight stay but a bit prone to noise from down stairs and people coming and going at night.
I stayed at the Manly Beach House for 17 nights in January whilst visiting with friends Living in Manly. I don't agree with many of the negative reviews on here, the hotel is cheap (for Manly) so the rooms are basic but the hotel is clean and the beds are comfy. The owners Dev and Shanti are lovely, friendly people and take good care of their customers. I would definitely stay here again, close to the beach, close to Manly town and Wharf. What's not to like?
